Volvo is in the midsts of overhauling their lineup with the 90 Series nearing completion, and attention being turned towards the 40 and 60 Series. As Car and Driver notes during the press introduction of the 40 Series concepts, a video was shown demonstrating the flexibility of the CMA platform. Various body styles such as convertible were shown. This got Car and Driver thinking, was Volvo considering adding more variants down the line on the CMA platform? Peter Mertens, Volvo’s head of research and development said CMA could sit underneath a coupe or convertible. But right now, Mertens said Volvo is focused on their core models for this and the SPA platform. At t…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 1, 2012 Its hard to believe that the current Volvo XC90 will be around 11 years old when the next XC90 will come out. But according to Inside Line, that is what will happen. The new XC90 isn't due out till 2014 at the earliest, but it will bring forth a platform that will underpin many of Volvo's future products. Called Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), this platform will underpin the next generation S60, V70, XC60 and S80. As for power, the XC90 will exclusively use four-cylinder power only. The four-cylinder engines will be part of the Volvo Environmental Architecture engine family and come in gas and dies…

Volvo has unveiled two new concepts that show what the future of their small cars will look like. Called the 40 Series concepts, Volvo says these show what is in store in terms of design and technology. The 40.1 is likely the preview to the XC40 crossover and the 40.2 is sneak peek into the next S40 sedan. Both concepts feature a number of design cues that we have seen on the XC90 and S90 such as 'Thor's Hammer' daytime running lights and wide grille. Both concepts use the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that was jointly developed by Volvo and Geely. This platform will underpin Volvo's future small car lineup including a new electric vehicle. A range of thr…

Despite the diesel scandal that has engulfed Volkswagen, the fuel is still going strong in Europe. But that could be changing with stricter emission standards coming and regulators starting to keep a keen eye on automakers. Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson believes with these changes, many automakers will switch from diesel to hybrid vehicles. “It is a very attractive alternative to a diesel engine. It offers much lower CO2 levels but more or less the same performance in both horsepower and torque. On cost, I would say that within a couple of years we will see a crossover, the diesel getting more expensive and the [hybrid system] going down,” said Samuelsson. “Diesels w…

Volvo is in the midsts of revitalizing their lineup with the XC90 currently on sale, and the S90 going on sale next year. But there is some talk of a new coupe coming. Auto Express spoke with Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's senior vice president of design. Ingenlath said the trio of concepts shown Frankfurt, Detroit, and Geneva in 2013 and 2014 would carry the brand far. The XC Coupe previewed the XC90 and the Concept Estate is a hint at the upcoming V90 wagon. So this could mean a production version the Concept Coupe coming to Volvo's lineup. Now Ingenlath says that Volvo will focus on the volume models for the time being, meaning that the coupe - named S90 in the repo…

We've known for some time that Volvo was working on updating their 60 Series models, but haven't seen either one pop up in spy photos. But this week, a spy photographer has given us our first look at the new V60 wagon. Volvo's typical camouflage treatment is on show with a swirly covering and plastic pieces fitted to various body panels. We can tell that the new V60 looks to follow in the footsteps of the larger V90 with a similar profile and front end. It appears this model is a T8 Plug-in Hybrid due to the opening on the left front fender. Some reports say Volvo could debut the new V60 at the Geneva Motor Show in March. We'll keep you posted. Last week, Chinese automaker and owner of Volvo, Geely announced that it would be acquiring just under 50 percent of shares into Malaysian automaker Proton and a majority stake in Lotus. For those who don't know, Proton is the current owner of Lotus since 1996. Final terms of this are still being worked on and are expected to be announced towards the end of July, but that isn't stopping many from wondering what Lotus could bring to the table. Lotus has a well-known reputation for building sharp handling vehicles along with providing engineering expertise to various automakers on fine-tuning suspensions. Examples include the Lotus Carlton (during GM's ownership), Isuz…

DETROIT — Volvo has been pretty quiet among the automakers developing electric vehicles, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t working on one. The company plans to roll out a test fleet next year and put some EVs in showrooms by 2013. The Swedish automaker arrived at the North American International Auto Show with a prototype Electric C30, a conversion based on the C30 hatchback. The car isn’t as sexy as, say, the Audi e-tron, but it’s a handsome car and more attractive than some EVs we’ve seen lately. Besides - Volvos have always been more about practicality and safety than leading-edge styling. Read More http://www.wired.com/autopia/2010/01/volvo_electric_c30/?utm_source=fee…

If you were hoping for Volvo to do something smaller than the upcoming 40 Series (C30 hatchback), then you'll be disappointed with this news. Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson tells Car and Driver they're aren't planning to anything below the 40 Series. “It’s very hard to make money in that segment right now . . . of course we could downsize [our CMA architecture, which underpins the 40-series], but that is not on the agenda,” said Samuelsson. Volvo has played in this arena before with the C30 hatchback. But the model never really made an impact on the marketplace. Over the course of eight years, Volvo only sold around 200,000 C30s. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 5, 2012 Volvo appears to have their heart set on a luxury coupe, or that is what Inside Line is reporting. Sources inside Volvo say the company is considering a coupe and convertible that will sit above the current C70. The C90 would compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe and convertible. If given the green light, the C90 will use Volvo's new Scalable Platform Architecture that will underpin the XC90 and other vehicles. Power will come from a range of four-cylinder gas, diesel engines, and a plug-in hybrid model. Source: Inside Line View full article
