Lotus, aiming to rejoin the ranks of the supercars again is introducing a new limited production halo vehicle. The Evija will be a fully electric hypercar costing $2.11 million each with only 130 copies made. The car is said to be capable of 1,973 horsepower from four electric motors and have a range of up to 250 miles. Electric vehicles aren't known for being lightweight with their heavy battery packs, so Lotus is offsetting the 70 kWh battery's weight with a fully carbon fiber monoque chassis. Lotus is confident that the car will reach the 3,704 lb. target weight. The 0-62mph time is said to be less than three seconds with a top speed of more than 200 mph.…

New Photo Gallery of Lotus' Future Sports Car Lineup WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2010 You may have to ask a second time for their name and you probably need to take more than a couple of looks to tell them apart, but that doesn't mean we're not impressed by the next generation of Lotus sports cars. Unveiled for the first time as concept studies at the Paris Motor Show in October, with the North American debut taking place at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, the new Elise, Esprit, Elite, Elan are a wild bunch. And while we don't have anything new to add about the four sports coupes, Lotus has unleashed a beautiful photo gallery shot in Hollywood, which you can enjoy…

Lotus Boss Reveals Plans For In-House Designed V-8 By Viknesh Vijayenthiran Editor December 15th, 2010 Right up until August of this year there were reports claiming Lotus would continue to rely on Toyota for its future powertrains, including the use bespoke V-8 and V-10 engines from Toyota’s upmarket Lexus division for a new range of high-end models such as the Esprit supercar and new Elite grand tourer. That won’t occur, according to Lotus boss Dany Bahar who revealed to Autocar that the automaker’s own engineers in Hethel, England were working on feasibility plans for new V-8 and V-6 powerplants for its future range of cars. As Bahar pointed out, Lotus has buil…

LOTUS EXPANDS EXECUTIVE LINEUP BY TWO, ONE FROM FERRARI By Mark Kleis Lotus has previously made it perfectly clear that it has no intentions of continuing with business as usual, and as such, today Lotus has secured two highly qualified executives in order to help make its major transition. The first individual worth mentioning is Karl-Heinz Kalbfell, who previously was involved with the BMW Group, among others. Kalbfell will aid Lotus by joining the Group Lotus management team, and will provide operational support and advise Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar regarding the most efficient delivery of the business plan. “I have many years and some very demanding positions unde…

Dissecting the Lotus Metamorphosis: The Company by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Nov 23rd 2010 at 2:57PM Lotus sent a cryptic missive last year indicating it wanted to challenge Porsche and Ferrari. Aiming at those targets, it pulled the trigger five times at the Paris Motor Show this year, unleashing the new Elise, Elan, Esprit, Elite and Eterne showcars. Then came the name for the project, "The Metamorphosis," and its tidings of a new era. Yet behind all the modern interpretive art, there are the simple nuts and bolts of getting a car company into a new place. Follow the jump to find out what we learned. Continue reading... Lotus creeps us out with Metamorphosis campaign [w/video] by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Nov 10th 2010 at 7:57PM Lotus isn't the first, just the latest, to encase one of its vehicles in the quixotic amber of conceptual art. In this case the project is called The Lotus Metamorphosis, and the aim is to express the company's own reversal in some way that is grander than a press release. Lotus employed French photographer Gérard Rancinan to conjure some ideas, and he gathered the five concepts from the Paris Motor Show for a photo session that created the images like the one above. The fact that Lotus has admitted that only the Esprit is being developed, the inclusion of…

Report: Esprit only new Lotus under development by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Nov 1st 2010 at 1:00PM We were a bit surprised when Lotus rolled out a total of five new concepts at this year's Paris Motor Show. Lotus unloaded its lightweight guns in an effort to showcase the automaker's future direction, but the question on our minds concerns which of these concepts will actually see the light of day. According to Autocar, only one of the five concepts is actually undergoing engineering work: the Esprit. Autocar quotes Lotus insiders who say that the future range-topping Esprit is the only vehicle being fully developed at the moment. The Esprit would be the first of the…

Video: 2014 Lotus Elite loses its roof by Jeff Glucker (RSS feed) on Oct 14th 2010 at 2:01PM Lotus made quite a splash at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The automaker grabbed the spotlight by showing off five new concept vehicles. One of the proposed cars is the Lotus Elite, a 2+2 grand tourer powered by a 611-horsepower, supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine borrowed from the Lexus IS-F. One surprising detail for this Lotus is its weight. The Elite tips the scales at 3,600 pounds, which is a mammoth sum for anything carrying the company badge. The reason for much of that extra weight may lie in the roof, as the Elite is fitted with a retractable folding hard-top. Losing the r…

First Look At 2014 Lotus Elite With Roof Down By Viknesh Vijayenthiran Editor October 13th, 2010 At last month’s 2010 Paris Auto Show Lotus showed off no less than six concept cars that the automaker intends on producing in the coming years, and one of the standouts was the new 2014 Lotus Elite grand tourer. Described as the embodiment of Lotus’ new era, the striking Lotus Elite concept car featured a “modern classic" look and wouldn’t look out of place sitting next to other sporty GTs like the Ferrari 599 or Maserati GranTurismo. However, what we got to see in Paris was only a taste of what Lotus has in store for the Elite. You see, the car was designed from the gr…

THE FUTURE OF LOTUS: A COMPREHENSIVE WRAP-UP By Andrew Ganz We knew that Lotus had something special up its sleeve for the Paris Motor Show, but we didn't quite expect the total revamp we found lurking on its display in one of the secondary halls at Paris' Porte de Versailles Exposition Center. Six new car concepts and one production-ready model helped signal what Lotus is calling "the dawn of a new era" for the British sports car manufacturer. Lotus wants to take on Porsche and Ferrari - and, if it can arrange the funding to do so, it very well might succeed. All six concepts were presented as previews of production models, although just how much cash there is in the…

THE END OF COMPROMISE: LOTUS DEBUTS NEW ELAN LIVE IMAGESOFFICIAL IMAGES By Drew Johnson Dusting off one of its historic nameplates, Lotus revived its Elan sports car at the Paris Motor Show. Designed as an everyday supercar, the new Elan will begin production in the summer of 2013. Falling in line with Lotus’ new design language, the Elan looks to be inspired from some of Lamborghini’s creations – especially in its orange Paris Duds. Slotting just above the Elise in the Lotus lineup, the Elan retains a relatively small footprint, but offers more usable than a vehicle of its size. The standard version of the Elan will come with just two seats, but a 2+2 model will als…

LOTUS USHERS IN NEW ERA WITH FOUR-DOOR ETERNE CONCEPT LIVE PHOTOS BY MARK ELIAS. By Andrew Ganz Intent on expanding its lineup, Lotus took the wraps off of a four-seat, four-door concept car at the Paris Motor Show: The Eterne. Powered by either traditional gasoline or green-oriented hybrid engines, the Eterne is set to go on sale in the spring of 2015, about four and a half years after its debut this week at the Paris salon. Part of a multi-prong expansion attack, the Eterne will go up against cars like the Porsche Panamera, Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Although only one concept car has been shown, the automaker did release a number of details about its pl…

Showing Lotus’ up-scale push, the all-new GT will go head-to-head with vehicles like the Ferrari California. Designed as a “modern classic”, the Elite sports a new exterior design for the British automaker, although a few ties to Lotus’ current lineup remain. Lotus designers look to have taken a few design cues from Mazda and Maserati, but the Elite remains a unique looking vehicle and sticks to Lotus’ new ‘elegant’ design philosophy. Lotus Engineering gets $2m from California for lightweight vehicle study by Autoblog Staff (RSS feed) on Sep 9th 2010 at 10:31AM Since the earliest days of Lotus, founder Colin Chapman lived by the philosophy of "Simplicate and add lightness." Over the last 60 years, that has manifested in cars from the Seven and Elan to the Elise and Evora. We can look for more of the same from the company, now that the California Air Resources Board has awarded Lotus Engineering a $2 million grant to conduct a study into future lightweight vehicles. The new study is a follow-up to an earlier program that saw Lotus build a prototype vehicle capable of being built in volumes of 50,000…

Lotus prepares for product blitz Autoweek -- September 2, 2010 11:43 CET Lotus is preparing a high-risk concept-car blitz that will redefine its identity at this year's Paris auto show. Sources have confirmed that the sports-car maker will take four all-new models to Paris, including two groundbreaking hybrids. But none of them will be on sale until at least a year and a half after the show. The first to become reality will be a modern-day Seven roadster, which could ultimately prove to be the biggest risk of them all. AutoWeek sources say it is far heavier and more comfort-oriented than the original Seven -- and it even runs such performance-sapping measures as ai…

Lotus reveals Evora S and Evora IPS ahead of Paris debut by Steven J. Ewing (RSS feed) on Aug 26th 2010 at 5:59PM Not long after Lotus accidentally leaked its plans to unveil two new Evoras at this year's Paris Motor Show, we now have the full details weeks before the dynamic duo make their public debut. The Evora S and IPS (which stands for "Intelligent Precision Shift" or "automatic transmission" in layman's terms) will nicely fill out the Evora range, and we're aching to get our hands on the former. For the Evora S, Lotus has tweaked the Toyota-sourced 3.5-liter V6 to produce 345 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque – gains of 69 hp and 37 lb-ft over the standar…

Lotus willing to build Evora-based sportscars for other automakers? by Sam Abuelsamid (RSS feed) on Aug 19th 2010 at 10:01AM Lotus is considering offering up its latest sports car platforms to other automakers, and this isn't the first time. When the Elise debuted in the mid-90s, Lotus sold the chassis to form the basis of new lightweight coupes with different powertrains, the most notable of which included the Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220 and, of course, the Tesla Roadster. According to recent reports, Lotus has received inquiries from several automakers about using the new Evora in similar ways. While the Evora is all-new, the chassis is built using similar, Elise-…

Spy Shots: Lotus Evora S looks great in red by Sam Abuelsamid (RSS feed) on Aug 17th 2010 at 2:59PM The Paris Motor Show in just over a month is shaping up to the be one of the biggest shows for Lotus in many decades. While the highlight is expected to be a new supercar successor to the departed Esprit, it apparently won't be alone. At least two additional occupants of the Lotus stand have been accidentally confirmed, including an Evora Automatic and a hotted-up Evora S. This second iteration of the newest Lotus is expected to receive a supercharger bolted to its 3.5-liter Toyota V6 boosting it up to 350 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The brakes and thermal…

SPIED! 2012 LOTUS EVORA S LEAVING NÜRBURGRING By Mark Kleis Just hours after Leftlane revealed that Lotus was planning on bringing an Evora Auto and an Evora S to the upcoming 2010 Paris Motor Show, our spies managed to capture shots of a shiny red Evora S prototype as it exited the Nürburgring race track. While just hours ago we had nothing but a name to go by, we have been able to glean a few details from our spy photos – the first ever taken of the Evora S. For starters, the most drastic change comes in the form of an all-new rear splitter which is significantly larger and more channeled than the found on the standard Evora. This test mule retains a dual-exhaust cen…

Lotus accidentally confirms Evora automatic and S variants for Paris through email snafu by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Aug 16th 2010 at 1:34PM Lotus seems to have quite a hit on its hands in the form of the Evora. We were quite taken with it ourselves when given the chance to put the car through its paces in Southern California, and we've yet to hear a nasty word uttered in its general direction. But that doesn't mean Lotus can't find a way to improve the breed yet further. Apparently, a couple of those improvements are headed to the Paris Motor Show later this year. Buried within the automaker's stand will be both a hotted-up S version of the Evora and one best…

LOTUS HINTS AT PARIS DEBUT FOR NEW ESPRIT By Drew Johnson Lotus has been hinting that a new-age Esprit model will debut at this September’s Paris Motor Show, and the British automaker has dropped another major hint supporting a revived version of the supercar. In a recent press release, Lotus pointed out that the original Esprit debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1975. The 2010 Paris show marks the 35th anniversary of the debut, with Lotus planning something special to commemorate the Esprit’s unveiling. “And what we also know now is that 35 years later, something breathtaking will happen once again. Once more in Paris. Once more at the Motor Show,” Lotus said in the …
