Honda Extreme

By the Manufacturer

Designed by: Nicholas David, Daniel Talbert, and David Cheng

The Honda Extreme is a concept of recyclable sustainability. The vehicle consists of a honeycomb chassis made of polycarbonate that can accommodate various body styles to better suit the different life stages of the owner so that the vehicle "grows" with the owner. The body can be modified at your local Honda Sustainability Center which also carries out the usual exemplary service and maintenance. At the end of the fifth year, the chassis can be recycled.

Honestly, not half bad compared to the other stuff this year.

Still it's pretty unoriginal, in concept or styling....

The basis behind this (exchanging body shells to suit individual needs) was first explored with GM's AUTOnomy skateboard concept years ago, btw.

The concept is older than that. ;) The skateboard thing may have started with the autonomy, but I recall concepts much older that would reuse a spaceframe & drivetrain, and just change out the interior & exterior panels. They actually could have done at least the exterior part of that idea with the Saturn S-Series pretty easily, since the body panels were not required for legal street driving, and had nothing to do with body/crash integrity. In fact, you can take a 3rd gen S-Series' body panels and put them on a 2nd gen - they bolt right up. They tweeked the space frame between the 1st & 2nd gens, though, so they don't swap. Would be pretty cool actually - pick out the body style YOU want. :)
