Life is a perpetual car payment

Wow, I was just sitting here thinking. The last time I was car payment-free was for a few months in 1998. I had my '94 S-10 paid off for a few months before I bought my first '98 Bug.

Once in a while I get a wild hair and think of dumping my newer vehicle and buying something I could just purchase outright... no payments. That's $324 per month, plus the savings in changing unsurance coverages, that could be used for something else.

But, there are so many cool new toys out there now. Such is life, I guess, when you're obsessed with vehicles like I am. They make me irrational!

Does anyone else here feel the same?

I've made a promise to myself that the first new car I buy will be paid for with a stainless steel briefcase of cash. I figure it would be a more motivating negotiating tool to lay $29,000 (or whatever) out on the salesman's desk for a $40,000 car, take a bundle of $1,000 out of my blazer and say, "This is for you on top of whatever they give you if I drive out of here for what's in here."

Well... my parent's would feel that way. The last time they didn't have any car payments was.... um... hmm... this is hard... let's see... uh... um... well... before they bought the 96 Grand Am. Had no payments before then. That's probably because it was their first new car. But yeah... I paid cash all at once for my Grand Am. It was only $1000 anyways...

I HATE having a car payment. For the Silverado, I financed it for 3 years, but then I paid it off after I think 3 months. Cars are money pits. They depreciate about 20% after you drive it off the lot, not to mention the ongoing insurance payments and registration fees, and then paying about 5% interest on the balance is adding insult to injury. The thought of having a payment for a new C6 or IS350 keeps me from getting another vehicle right now, and I don't feel like depleting my savings. Maybe next year.

Lets face it. Each and everyone of us will have a car payment. We're automotive enthusiasts. 99% of us, GM enthusiats, the rest well...should be living elsewhere but that's a debate for another time. We'll have car payments right along with our viagra payments. I still plan to have my Solstice however. I plan on paying that off in early '07.
