It's about that time of year...

Recommended Posts

...to total up the miles driven in 2008 and put the older Monte Carlos away for the winter ... this time, including the '87 MC LS, if I can find a satisfactory "winter" (and possibly "road trip") car....

Sunday, November 23 ... I drove the older 4 MCs for the first time in over a month, due in part to not-so-nice weather on the weekends and other plans. I filled each gas tank and added StaBil to each one, so they are ready for winter storage, when that time actually arrives. I almost had 'em all out on Thanksgiving Day, but a certain 2-week-old nephew made it hard to leave the house that Thursday....

So, instead, Friday, November 28 (another sunny, relatively warm day in Chicagoland) ... I drove them again, about 50 miles each. As I've done all year, I chose a mostly-new "path" to drive. The more I explore around here, the more I'm reminded of different places I've visited during my road trips....

If the forecast for the next few days holds true, November 28 might be the last time I drive the older 4 MCs this year. So, I calculated how many miles I've driven each of the MCs in 2008. Turns out, despite the high gas prices for the summer driving season, I drove the older 4 MCs nearly DOUBLE the miles I drove them in 2007. Go figure.

"BROWNY" ... 1972 MC

11/28/2008 odometer = 144,986

11/18/2007 - 11/28/2008 = 957 miles driven

11/24/2006 - 11/18/2007 = 489 miles driven

11/19/2005 - 11/24/2006 = 497 miles driven

2008 milestones

... 144,950 mile mark on the odometer

... 8,994 miles driven since I've owned it

"ELVIRA" ... 1976 MC

11/28/2008 odometer = 60,140

11/18/2007 - 11/28/2008 = 930 miles driven

11/24/2006 - 11/18/2007 = 506 miles driven

11/19/2005 - 11/24/2006 = 527 miles driven

2008 milestones

... 60,000 mile mark on the odometer

... 17,638 miles driven since I've owned it

"SWEET PEA" ... 1979 MC

11/28/2008 odometer = 143,261

11/18/2007 - 11/28/2008 = 959 miles driven

11/24/2006 - 11/18/2007 = 483 miles driven

11/19/2005 - 11/24/2006 = 500 miles driven

2008 milestones

... 143,000 mile mark on the odometer

... 37,199 miles driven since I've owned it

"SWEET TEA" ... 1981 MC

11/28/2008 odometer = 191,486

11/18/2007 - 11/28/2008 = 944 miles driven

11/24/2006 - 11/18/2007 = 482 miles driven

11/19/2005 - 11/24/2006 = 476 miles driven

2008 milestones

... 191,000 mile mark on the odometer

... 8,670 miles driven since I've owned it

"BABY BLUE" ... 1987 MC

11/28/2008 odometer = 163,980

11/18/2007 - 11/28/2008 = 9,780 miles driven

11/24/2006 - 11/18/2007 = 9,510 miles driven

11/19/2005 - 11/24/2006 = 8,831 miles driven

2008 milestones

... 163,500 mile mark on the odometer

... 58,260 miles driven since I've owned it

How about you? How many miles did you drive your car(s) this year? ...total since you've owned it? And, did you explore your "home area" in 2008?

Got the car at 14,600 miles. It's now at 181,400. Still has no problems. I attribute that to the massive quantities of bird $h! it attracts, as getting pooped on is good luck.

LOL! I'll have to keep that in mind next time any of my MCs get "blessed" with bird poop ;).

Looks like the forecast from late last week/this weekend was correct; we are under a Winter Weather Advisory (had been a Winter Storm Warning) until noon on Monday. Translation ... the older 4 MCs have seen roads for the last time in 2008. That also means I'm officially late in obtaining a winter beater to keep the '87 MC LS out of the snow/salt....

And ... a few other points I thought of AFTER I posted originally....

...Given that at least one weekend I drove ~100 miles per MC, had just ONE (1) weekend in October been decent weather (along with me being available to get the cars out), all of the older 4 MCs would've had over 1,000 miles on them for the first time in one year...! Arg...I was "oh so close" to that 1,000 mile mark...and would've also managed to hit some other mileage milestones.... Ah, well ... a goal and some milestones to look forward to in 2009, perhaps....

...ironically, all of the "back road exploring" I did in this area in 2008 gave me the highest total miles on each of them in a year period ... despite none of them going to the 2008 MC Nationals or the 2008 NMCOA Mini Meet in Stillman Valley IL (I drove the '87 MC LS to that).

...I drove all of my MCs over 13,500 miles ... and that doesn't include the miles I put on rental cars for road trips....

...If I can find a "winter" car of sorts, the '87 MC LS will see significantly less miles in 2009....

I dont know how many miles I put on the 3 this year. I guess I will break the news. I was able to get a deal too good to pass up on a left over 2008 Impala so pretty soon the 2005 Equinox may be history. It pays sometimes to take advantage of a bad economy.
