Does it still count as "Tech"...

Recommended Posts

Okay, 1994 Century.

The cupholder in the armrest is broken. I threw it out a while back. Since I've become an avid tea drinker in the morning and putting it in a travel mug, I'm tired of holding beverages while I drive anywhere.

I found this, a cupholder to replace the one in the armrest. The guy advertises it for a Buick LeSabre/Park Ave, some Caddy and Olds too, but said it may work in other models. How can I find out if this will work in mine? Was it a standard cupholder mechanism used in GM armrests?

eBay Cupholder Link Thingy

Anyone know?

That appears to be the same one as in my old '96 Century. And since this is GM, I doubt they put the resources into developing two nearly identical cupholders. Worst case scenario is that it doesn't fit perfectly.

That's what I was thinking too. Thanks Satty.

You never know, sometimes companies make little, pointless changes that no one would even notice until they go to replace the part.

There's two different kinds of cup holders in this era, the single cup and the double cup. The width between the two pegs is the same on both and the double cup holder will fit on a arm rest that was made for a single cup holder, but the double cup holder won't fold into an armrest. If your car has the single cup holder, you can use the double cup holder like the one pictured, it just won't be able to fold up. I think I've got a double cup holder laying around if you need one.

Thank you so much WMJ... I wish I had seen this message this morning. I went and got it. They say 14 day money back guarantee, so if you still have the double, I'd be willing to give you some money for it. Originally the car had the double.

I'll admit, I was never a huge fan of it because it didn't really support the drinks well, but at this point anything is better than me holding it. I'm sick of waiting for the window to roll up so slowly while I'm driving and hoping that the cup sitting on the center hump doesn't tip until I can grab it again.

I still love my Century, despite it's little flaws that irritate the ---- out of me.

Ah, cupholders.. don't know how I lived w/ out them in my older cars. My '80s Escort, Mustangs, Bronco II, never had them..I always had lame plastic clip on cupholders that stuck on door around the base of the window. My sister's Mercedes doesn't have 'em either...when I drive one of those cars and go to Starbucks I have to request a cup tray or drive home holding a cup in my hand, driving w/ one hand. I'm amazed it took so long for cupholders to become 'mandatory' in cars.

What do your cupholders look like?

Well, I don't have them anymore, but they looked pretty much like the ones in the picture.

IMHO, most of GM's cupholders are awful, and I still need to hold my beverage and drive.

The ones in my Jeep are pretty good, I like how they are removable to wash. Though what I'd really like, though, are adjustable, heated, chilled and lighted cupholders...

Here's what the one I have looks like, it's out of a late 1990's LeSabre, sitting in the arm rest of my 1988 Olds:

Here's what I mean when I say a double holder won't fit into an arm rest that was designed for a single holder. You can still have it out and fit drinks in it just fine, it just won't fold into the arm rest:

Thanks WMJ... it looks different than the original I had. Let me see if the one I bought fits inside the armrest. If it doesn't, I'll return it and take yours. Thanks again!
