Infiniti News: Rumorpile: Infiniti Still Eying A Version Of The GT-R

From the rumors that just won’t die file; Infiniti is considering a version of Nissan’s GT-R. Car Magazine spoke with Francois Bancon, head of advanced planning for Infiniti. He said Infiniti was looking at 'three or four' proposals for a possible flagship. One of those proposals is a sports car based on GT-R.

"It's too good a platform to use only on one model," Bancon said.

When asked what changes would need to be made for Infiniti to use the GT-R, Bancon said,

“It would have to be softer than the GT-R. 'And that's extremely difficult to do. You can't easily tweak the GT-R to deliver the sophisticated, more refined performance we would need on an Infiniti.”

Bancon said a decision could be reached within two to three years, which mean production of this or any flagship model could take up five years after the decision.

Does Infiniti really need a more expensive super car? Cadillac XLR did not survive, Lexus I do not see surviving past a couple years.

Reality is that there is only so much money being spent on crazy hi end sport cars.

I would think the money could be better spent on their existing auto's giving them more interior room to fit everyone instead of just the 5'8" tall crowd.

This is curious news. I thought Infiniti already had a version of the GTR. The GTR is based on a car known in the Japanese domestic market as "Nissan Skyline". We in America recognize it as the Infiniti G37. This would seem a bit redundant, don't you think?

The GT-R of today has nothing in common with the Skyline. You are thinking of previous generations of GT-Rs, when they were called the Skyline GT-R. Today's GT-R is a unique model.

It is true the G37 is based on the Skyline, but the current GT-R is not related to the Skyline.

Today's GT-R is it's own animal these days. Even if it was a rebadge G37, the way the G37 is set up can't touch the GT-R on performance.
