Chevrolet News:General Motors Replacing Chevrolet Volt's Charging Cord

Yesterday, General Motors announced they will replace the 120-volt power cords on the majority of Chevrolet Volt models the company has sold since 2010. This comes four months after a report from Yahoo Autos said Volt owners were complaining about their power cords overheating and in a few cases melting. At the time GM said the cords were safe and said the issue was the wiring of the charging outlet.

GM spokesman Randal Fox says the replacement, which GM doesn't consider a recall or a safety issue, was meant to as meant to "offer a more consistent charging experience." Owners will be notified of the swap by letter in the next few weeks.

This is not good news for the Volt. Even if it shows GM is trying to do what is right it will be hard to convince people that they should'nt get the Prius or Leaf.

Big deal, people that do have volts will not see this as a deal breaker and for people interested in buying a volt I do not see this as killing that purchase either.

Prius was anything but perfect when it came out.

From a business standpoint maybe not, but from a consumer stand point their hardware/software has had some ugly bumps and they still seem to have it going up and down for DELL where as IBM got out of the business.

Hell has anyone here noticed that Opel has 7,000 preorders of the Ampera already. What the Americans don't by the Euro Geeks will. they are paying close to and over twice what we pay. Even with the high price this car is a creditable option for them. Not many places to pull over on many of their roads over there when your Leaf battery dies. Top Geat has great difficulty finding anyway to charge them on the road and it will take a good amount of time to correct this.

This issue will only slow growth but this plarform will continue and adjust to the needs and wants of GM and the American public. This is uncharted territory and this is far from the last issue or change.

Anyone else notice Chis's photo of the Volt with large Cadillac wheels floating around? The Converj looks to be on the way and a lot closer than some realize. With Volt body they can get a lot of work done with little notice.

They're framing this all wrong. It's a free upgrade. The car equivalent of a software update. Volt Mountain Lion.

Agree, Marketing a free upgrade to give better charging performance is the way to go.

+1, GM needs to make this happen sooner and release it with the ELR. It would build great credentials on the street for familes in need of something bigger than the volt.

GM needs that little people mover they showed in China. It for a MPV was pretty stylish with the aero fins and all.

I expect any new models will be on the second gen.
