Scion News: Rumorpile: FR-S Convertible and Turbo Canned

Here at the rumorpile, we've been reporting on a couple derivatives for the Scion FR-S for the past year or so. The first is a convertible FR-S which we got a preview of at this year's Geneva Motor Show and the other is a turbocharged version. But a new report says both models have been canceled.

Automotive News reports that the two FR-S models have been canned due to return of the investment not being viable for those models.

need a turbo. toyota is afraid of it being subject to better competition if they up the power on it. it gets praised now despite of middle of the road engine.

I have yet to see either of the twins here on the roads in seattle. They sit on the lots. People want more than a two seater and I think this is a valid concern and I doubt they will really be able to recover the investment once they have to many versions of a limited use auto like this.

Society has gotten away from the driving machines and the extra income to spend on a 3rd auto like this.

If they can do the turbo with minimal cost that can truly be recovered, great otherwise this is what I see as a limited run car of 3-5 years before it goes away.

Should never have wasted money and time developing the 2.0L FA20 boxer engine. The FR-S/BR-Z would have been better powered with the same engines that went into the Imprezza -- the 148 bhp FB20 and the 300 bhp EJ207.
