Nissan News: Nissan Hard At Work On Next-Generation GT-R

This year's New York Auto Show saw Nissan reveal a facelifted GT-R complete with a new front end and a more powerful version of the twin-turbo V6 engine. But Nissan is hard at work on designing the next generation GT-R.

 

Automotive News spoke with Nissan's chief creative officer, Shiro Nakamura. Nakamura said one of the key goals with the next GT-R is to boost the efficiency of the twin-turbo V6 and there is the possibility of the vehicle using a hybrid system.

 

"Electrification is almost inevitable for any car. If the next-generation GT-R has some electrification, nobody would be surprised at that time," said Nakamura.

 

Deciding the powertrain configuration will play a key role into how the next GT-R is designed. Nakamura admits redesigning the GT-R will be a challenge.

 

"It's very tough to redesign this car, but we are starting now."

 

Nakamura believes the GT-R still looks good because it doesn't try to copy or follow design trends.

 

"To my eye, it still doesn't look old because it's not influenced by anything. If it tries to capture some trend, it would look dated," said Nakamura.

 

The goals with the GT-R redesign is to improve overall aerodynamics and performance.

Hopefully they can get rid of the Blah design language and bring back the Mojo of the R33/R34 version. That was a true Skyline.

Im beginning to warm over with the styling of the R32. Its a little raw and rough around the edges styling wise as where The R33 and R34 have dialed it in.

Like I said, the R32 is slowly captivating me. I saw a couple of them over the week-end and they...look good. Id say as good as a GM G-Body from the 1980s. A tad less refined and stylish, but very comparable.

 

The R33 and R34 are just superbly done...

Performance wise as well as styling design!!!

 

The GT-R...I NOW find it ugly.

When it came out...what? A decade ago?  I liked the styling....liked...not loved....the design did not blow me away, but it was...likeable.

Over the years though, I fell outta love with...

 

1. I realized that its a HUGE car...muscle car proportions. Usually I dont have a problem with that, however, the GT-R IS kinda the continuation of the SKYLINE bloodline...INFINITI G35 aside, Skylines are smallish Japanese flavoured muscle cars...

The GT-R is a....well...its a start of something new...I could respect that too....HOWEVER...

 

2. The car is too digital for my tastes...too Playstation 4 Grand Turismo 6 for me to respect it. Its fantastic for what it is. Not my style is what Im saying.

If I want a big car, a muscle car, Id just get the biggest baddest muscle car there is...a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. Its the real deal. I dont care if the Hellcat aint as fast or doesnt turn the corners as well. It does the one thing I want it to do FLAWLESSLY...and that is it being one bad ass ride. A REAL muscle car ride. Complete with a big honking loping V8. You cant say that with the GT-R...

 

3. The GT-R is soooooo digital...its impressive actually, however, hell will NEVER be unleashed unless the GT-R's GPS acknowledges its on a racetrack.. With the Hellcat, Satan is riding shotgun with you at all times.

 

I do have to say though, if Nissan does decide to electrify the powertrain on the next gen GT-R, then it would definitely  befit the persona of the car, its all electronic performance anyway...its a personality trait that I could start respecting the GT-R again.

      Leaf 2.0 Spec's Leak Online

      Spy's seem to be getting the upper hand at Nissan or Nissan is deciding to take an aggressive attack on controlling the release of data about the Nissan Leaf 2.0. While the rumors of multiple size of batteries is unconfirmed and no comment from Nissan since earlier this year word of a 340 mile battery pack option would be available, we do have confirmed base starting points for the price at each of the three trim levels.
      Leaf 2.0 will have the following specifications:
      147 HP with 236 pound feet of torque
      Base Battery is 40 kWh
      Base Trim starting price:
      S - $29,990
      SV - $32,490
      SL - $36,200
      Curb Weight 3,433

      You can click review the full details of the Leaf 2.0 here at the Autoblog story. It gives full details about the car and some are rather interesting. Example is that the Chevrolet Bolt has a 10" screen and the Leaf 2.0 is showing a 5" screen. Interior cargo capacity is 30 cubic feet. HP is a bump up from Leaf 1.0 as they go from 107 and 187 to 147 and 236. Yet this is a far cry from the Bolts 200 and 266. Also we now know that the Leaf 2.0 will have a 40kWh base battery compared to 60kWh for the Bolt and the Tesla 3's 50 kWh base battery or 75 kWh battery option. The leaf will have a standard 36 month or 36,000 mile warranty and 60 month or 60,000 mile power train warranty. 
      Leaf 2.0 kicks the Bolt's and Tesla 3's butt is in pricing with a base starting price of $29,990 compared to Bolts $37,495 base price and Tesla 3 $35,000 base price even though you have to wait till end of 2018 to get a base Tesla 3 and these prices are before any federal and or state rebates / credits.

      A new report from Automotive News says BMW could be expanding their lineup of vehicles in both directions.
      On the low end is the 1-Series sedan. Already on sale in China, the model could be coming to U.S. in early 2019 according to a source. Previously, BMW said their small front-wheel drive sedan would not be sold in the U.S. But with Mercedes-Benz bringing the A-Class sedan to U.S. next year, this may have cause BMW to change their minds. A quick refresher, the 1-Series sedan is a front-wheel drive model.
      Moving over to the high-end, BMW is readying the 8-Series coupe to debut late next year. They have already shown a concept to give us an idea of what it may look like (to our eyes, it reminds us slightly of the Lexus LC coupe). It will be based on the 7-Series sedan, complete with the CLAR architecture. A convertible and Gran Coupe (4-door coupe) will be introduced at a later date. What will this mean for the 6-Series? Aside from the new 6-series Gran Turismo, expect the rest of the 6-Series family to fade away in the coming years.

      The X2 will go on sale sometime in the first quarter of 2018. It will be based on the X1 and feature coupe-like styling. BMW's 7-Seat X7 will debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but will not arrive to the U.S. until 2019.  A new 3-Series will go on sale before the end of 2018 and use BMW's CLAR architecture.       Nissan Group reports July 2017 U.S. sales
      NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan Group announced total U.S. sales for July 2017 of 128,295 units, a decrease of 3 percent over the prior year.
      Nissan highlights:
      Overall sales of Nissan crossovers, trucks and SUVs set a July record, up 5 percent. Nissan Titan sales increased 232 percent to 3,791. Nissan Armada sales climbed to 2,477, up 309 percent. Nissan NV200 set a July record with 1,625 in sales, up 10 percent. Nissan LEAF sales increased to 1,283, up 21 percent.

      Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' CEO Sergio Marchionne made a surprise announcement during the company's second-quarter earnings calls last week. The company is planning to have more than half of its lineup to have electrified powertrains by 2022. Leading the charge will be Maserati which will offer some sort of electrified powertrain (hybrid and electric-only).
      What caused Marchionne, a person who hasn't been a fan of electric vehicles for quite a while, to change his tune? A lot of it has to do the various emission scandals on diesel vehicles.
      "What has really made the issue absolutely mandatory now is the fate of diesel … especially in Europe. Some type of electrification on gas engines is inevitable," said Marchionne.
      Also, the announcement of some European countries announcing bans of gas and diesel vehicles in the coming years caused a change of heart for FCA.
      “We [FCA] have been reluctant to embrace that avenue until we saw clearer the path forward," said Marchionne.
      There are issues for FCA's electrified future as the variable production costs for various components (batteries, electric motors, etc) will not come down quickly. To shoulder these costs, Maserati will take the lead on this initiative.
      "When it completes the development of its next two models, it will effectively switch all of its portfolio to electrification," said Marchionne.
      "It's an integral part of the development of all of the group."
