  1. True... But there is the funny little thing I did and showcase an evolution of various E Class generations starting with the first one as a new bar of soap and through the generations unto the "S" Class EV evolving into used bar of soaps. The funniest of all, is that the EQS's roof line MATCHES that used bar of soap. My post was never meant to discredit him. My post was to make fun of the EQS's inspiration of used bar of soaps. Noticed I didnt address him on anything other than just showcase used bar of soaps and E Class Mercedes cars over the years? Nothing more, nothing less.

  2. I could go either way on the frunk. I do see its usefulness, but not having it wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me in this car. I agree with everything else you said though. There's no reason the EQS has to look like this and there's no reason it has to be so small inside. It feels a full class down from S in terms of space. It would make a perfectly good EQE (and the EQE would make a good EQC). It just doesn't have that almost-a-limo quality and space that the ICE S-Class has. It's like if Chrysler made an electric 200, slapped a 300E badge on it, and said "See! Same thing, but electric!"

  3. Quote from the MB press release on this: "DRIVE PILOT can offer to take over the driving, initially up to the legally permitted speed of 60 km/h" That's 37.2823 mph for those of us in the states. There are suburban roads around here that you'll get run over doing that speed... and that's with the slow-ass Pittsburgh drivers. SuperCruise can run at 80 mph+. GM's UltraCruise can run at 80 mph+ but also: Provide users with information based on their experience with the system through an all-new dynamic display React to permanent traffic control devices Follow internal navigation routes Maintain headway; follow speed limits Support automatic and on-demand lane change Support left and right-hand turns Support close object avoidance Support parking in residential driveways The first vehicles getting will be higher end Cadillacs and the top trims of the big SUVs.

  4. The S-class has been the best car in the world for 40-50 years at this point. Yes it is big and expensive and you can get 80% the cat in an E-Class or Lexus but if you want the best, it’s the S-class. Why they departed so much from what has widely been considered the best car for decades makes no sense. Other than to just be different or go out on a limb which is rather un-German of them.

  5. If @smk4565 is to be believed, the S-Class is the end-all-be-all car. Need a luxury sedan? Get an S-Class. Been in some hard times and looking at a Corolla? Get a used S-Class. Single mother working three jobs? Get an S-Class. Now, I'm teasing him a bit of course, but in that $110k - $130k range, he's right. There really is no other choice. Are there better choices at lower price points? Sure. But if you're in the market for a full-size Panzer tank that is safe, swift, silent, and sumptuous for a $1,500/m lease payment, are you really going to go to Lexus or Genesis? And the point I'm agreeing with him and you on is that they should have sculpted the EQS to look exactly like the S-Class. Do a fancy light up matrix grille or something to differentiate it... I'm sure the people in Stuttgart could come up with something.

  6. Quite honestly, the EQS (whatever number), the one that I posted to make fun of, doesnt really look all that bad. I dont have a problem with it, really. Its just that its design language is from the 1990s. A design language that is 30 years old. That would be my beef with it. Not because it looks like a used bar of soap. ALL cars from the 1990s look like a used bar of soap. And some cars of today too.

  7. Hahaha I could tell you accidently overlooked two letters in their garbage alphanumeric naming scheme.. Speaking of which, the fact that they're naming the SUV and sedan both EQS is awful. They're literally "EQS### Sedan" and "EQS### SUV". WTF Mercedes?!?

  8. I drove the EQS AMG (and took video) and it is a technological tour-de-force.... but as a car, it's kinda lame. My goal is to get both the written and video review out this month.

  9. Had to spend money on my rides this week. $1,600 for new rotors, calipers and ceramic pads front and back on the Escalade. 180,000 plus miles and had only needed a pad set last few times, but this time, the rotors were warped due to having been machined the last few times and one of the rear calipers had frozen so messed up that. Went new all around to ensure solid safe braking with Ski season approaching and wet cold fall. $1,124.91 for troubleshooting and new CPU on the SS. 200,000 miles almost, probably will crack it by the end of November, but my check engine light kept coming on rotating the same error message among all my oxygen sensors. I honestly when the repair shop said they suspected the CPU was thinking 2 to 3 thousand or so due to the chip shortage. Lucky for me, due to it being the 6L V8, the chips are readily available and was much cheaper. Now to wash them one at a time, put them in the garage to warm and dry and then give them their fall/winter wax job.

  10. In temperate climate zones, it definitely is, or was. I never replaced the front rotors on either of my first two cars, both Cutlass Supremes and both mostly driven in California. Granted, the front brake pads lasted about 50,000 miles because of the RWD platform's more even weight distribution, but they (mechanics) just kept turning the rotors ... and the drums.

  11. Eh… I wouldn’t go that far. They are rebadging existing ChargePoint hardware with their own three-point star logo and building a posh charging station. There’s no point in building a network due to be finished in 5 years with technology that is already behind. They’ll move to 800V eventually but even their 400V cars charge at an acceptable pace. When the first ones go up, it makes a nice place for Benz owners to justify their purchase to themselves, feel nice, and take lots of Instagram selfies.

  12. The next cycle of the technology is Plug to Charge. You still need to pre-register with the charge network, but if you get ElectrifyAmerica and ChargePoint set up, you’ve got a good start. But the way it works is the charging network can remember your car and as soon as you plug it in, links to your account and starts charging. No app or credit card needed. Speaking of - Costco’s credit card has offered 4% cash back on all gas purchases for years now. But recently they added 4% cash back on most public charging station purchases as well. They’re the only major card I’m aware of that offers that.

  13. SuperCruise you only have to watch the road for liability reasons. Cadillac has stated a while ago that they have the technological capability for Level 3, but they have concerns regarding liability. The requirement that you pay attention is why you don’t hear about Cadillacs plowing into a semi-truck because the driver was watching Lord of the Rings like you do with Tesla. This is one area where being first isn’t necessarily the best thing. I don’t mind GM taking it slow. BTW, GM Cruise has been on the road for over a year now, so your assertion that Benz did it first is false. Furthermore, calling Benz’s system Level 3, but only up to 37 mph means it’s not really Level 3. UltraCruise isn’t considered Level 3 because the driver has to take over in situations like a roundabout… so how can Benz be Level 3 if it can’t go over 37 mph? As long as there are no roundabouts on your trip, UltraCruise is door to door at all legal speeds. That’s far more useful than what the S-Class does.

  14. Here the cadillac dealer will turn the rotors as long as they still meet the GM speck. Same with many 3rd party shops at least here in Washington they do.

  15. 2024 is when we'll see the production version... if it is actually in production by then I'd be surprised... but if we see the production version get unveiled at 2024 CES (exactly a year from now), then rolling into dealerships in September 2024 as a '25 model is plausible. The Silverado EV is supposed to be rolling out in the Fall of this year and I put my reservation on one about a year ago... so it is similar timing. Because of my place on the list, I don't expect to see mine until 2025. BUT... if this RAM keeps some of the useful features of the concept, I could see putting down another reservation deposit on this as well.

  16. Nope not the best car in the world, NO PROOF PROVIDED YET other than your Fanboy saying. Gold Standard is also subjective as that is you saying it, not the world. Please provide that Country Regulatory approval as right now only 2 state has approved it, Nevada and California. Mercedes Level 3 autonomy gets approval in Nevada | Automotive News (autonews.com) Mercedes Introducing Level 3 Autonomous Driving in California and Nevada - The Detroit Bureau And even then, it has stipulations. QUOTE: Drive Pilot currently is focused on use during relatively low-speed commutes — up to 60 kmh, or 37 mph. But Mercedes officials told TheDetroitBureau.com during a test drive of the system they hope to allow it to operate at higher speeds as they gather more data and gain more confidence.

  17. That is not proof unless you want to start providing that long list of media that believes this. Remember to cover the last 40-50 years. Don’t worry though. I’ll help you. Let’s start here, shall we? Mercedes is not the best luxury car on this particular list so I guess it’s not “all automotive media”. Maybe next time, lay off the fan laden superlatives that are easily debunked. https://www.globalbrandsmagazine.com/top-9-most-luxury-cars-in-the-world/ And here’s one from another automotive media source. I can’t really make that out though. Who is rated above the S-Class here?

  18. Nor will it be. Ford might put a Lincoln on there to try and earn some ROI on it, but Ford is already moving on to version 2.0 of that platform, but the differences are so large that it might as well be a whole new platform. I think Rivian and Ford backed away from each other on vehicle development. They might share some motor or battery tech in the Lightning, but their cooperation on development has mostly ended. Elon woke a sleeping dragon by taunting GM. VW is doing it because they got the pants sued off them, but they are equally as methodical and their MEB platform looks very solid.

  20. There is an EQA coming, that should be under 50. Mercedes EV's cost Mercedes prices though, most brands EV's are way more than their other cars. Although I think they need to get the battery cost down that EQB needs to drop about $5k in price, or else people will just buy GLB.

  22. Usually, you can get two turns on rotors on most smaller autos. Escalade only seems to get a single turn on the rotors before replacing them due to the size and weight of the auto. As I stated, due to the damage done on the one rotor and the others have slight warps, I decided to replace them all. The repair place used GM Gold pads and then I went after market rotors and calipers as I went with multiple clamping calipers compared to the GM single piston version. I also went with the anodized rotors so keep them looking clean rather than rusting up since I am on the pass so much during winter to ski.

  23. Exactly. Easy to confuse the two when the Best or Nothing chose “nothing” as far as efforts to give these truly distinguishable names from their ICE counterparts. Strange how that is never brought up by the same folks who deride Cadillac for their naming schemes.

  25. 2022 is another year from which everyone is ready to move on. The world continued to recover from the impacts of COVID and is learning to live with the variants. Mass shootings unfortunately remain common, though this past year had particularly shocking events at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas and an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado. Inflation was rampant, with high gas prices due to the conflict in Ukraine affecting the cost of almost everything. Putin's misguided war in Ukraine has cost tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of lives of both military and civilians. Cryptocurrencies crashed, and home mortgage interest rates doubled as the Fed tried to control inflation. Dobbs v. Jackson overturned Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court. The political red wave that was predicted in the fall elections from the adverse economic news did not materialize, seemingly because of abhorrently poor candidate quality and youth turnout from backlash to the abortion ruling. In popular culture, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscar’s. Ye, aka Kanye West, spewed antisemitic remarks and was dropped from major business partners. The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial mercifully came to an end after two months. Prominent deaths included Bob Saget, Mikhail Gorbachev, Naomi Judd, Queen Elizabeth II, Jerry Lee Lewis, Loretta Lynn, Angela Lansbury, Kirstie Alley, Olivia Newton-John, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, and at the end of the year, Pele, Barbara Walters, and Pope Benedict XVI. In automotive news, the push for electrification is unrelenting. The Inflation Reduction Act brought revised tax credits for the purchase of electric vehicles, restoring credits to purchasers of GM and Tesla EVs, but it came with confusing new restrictions based on location of assembly and source of battery mineral content. At the beginning of 2022, Chevrolet revealed the Silverado EV. Cadillac started deliveries of the Lyriq crossover in August as the brand started the transition to an EV-only lineup. Corvette is to become a sub-brand in two years with a sedan and SUV, and there are rumors of a Camaro EV sub-brand as well. Electra is becoming the EV sub-brand for Buick. Updating logos continued to be a thing for automakers. Buick unveiled a new logo that ditched the familiar circle to help signify the new direction of electrification. Audi flattened the ringed logo, as is the current trend. Citroen and Lancia also have updated logos. Dodge announced the end of production for the current Charger and Challenger models but revealed an EV Charger concept car with fake engine sounds. Toyota introduced a new generation of Prius to a gushing press. It has more power, bigger wheels, and most importantly better looks, but less interior room, less cargo capacity, and worse aerodynamics than the outgoing model. Dealerships still had low inventory amid the supply chain constraints, and added dealer mark-up or exorbitantly priced add-ons persisted. GM lost sales leadership to Toyota in 2021 amid supply chain issues but is poised to regain the title in 2022. EV startups like Canoo and Faraday Future struggled to reach production. Canoo is testing vehicles with Walmart in Texas, and vehicle deliveries are expected in a few months, about the same time Faraday supposedly will start delivering vehicles assembled in California. The Fiskar Ocean is about 9 months from starting deliveries. Lucid has struggled to produce the high-end Air sedans. Departing vehicles include the Kia Stinger, Acura NSX, and Ford GT, as well as the Hyundai Accent, Ionic Hybrid, Ionic Hybrid Plug-In, and Veloster N. Here is the 21st annual edition of Cheers and Jeers for some of the best and worst of all things automotive in the past year: Cheers to the Best Scoop on the hybrid and AWD 2024 Corvette E-Ray found by Corvette sleuths on Chevy’s website. The visualizer gave a glimpse at the new colors and body-color trim. Cheers to Cadillac for the Boldest Move by introducing the handbuilt $300,000 Celestiq. It’s a statement of confidence but is also risky because Cadillac does not have a good track record with low-volume boutique models. The styling is polarizing, but it will debut the new Ultra Cruise with lidar. Cheers to the Best Vehicle Introduction, the Hyundai Ionic 6. It’s not exactly pretty, but it does have a best-in-class 0.21 drag coefficient, Hyundai’s excellent EV propulsion, and it’s a car. Honorable Mention goes to the BMW I4, based on the 4-Series 4-door Gran Coupes, resulting in an ICE-looking EV for those who may not want to stand out, BMW has their wild-looking iX, but the I4 and forthcoming I7 will appeal to those who want to blend in. It goes without saying Jeers to the hideous grills. Jeers to Toyota for the Worst Vehicle Introduction with the ungainly Crown. It replaced the Avalon as their new flagship and has a storied name, but it’s unclear who would want to buy such a thing. Jeers to the Biggest Troll Man-Child, Elon Musk. The Twitter takeover has been nothing short of disastrous, and alienating the greenie and techie base of Tesla vehicles is a questionable marketing strategy. Tesla had to resort to ever-sweetening deals, up to $7,500 and free Supercharger miles for some models, to move vehicles at the end of the year, though some drop in demand is likely from the tax credits resuming in January. The value of Tesla stock dropped by two thirds in the year, and Musk saw his personal fortune drop by $200 billion. The years late Cybertruck is still undergoing engineering and the new Roadster is nowhere to be found. Jeers to Toyota for Failed ZEV Leadership, having placed all their ZEV marbles on hydrogen but seeing consumers gravitate towards battery EVs. Hydrogen continues to have potential in certain segments like trucking. For their one BEV offering, Toyota tried to buy back all the bZ4X crossovers due to the wheels coming off, and they have had to revamp their EV strategy to catch up. For the New Year, wishing all your EV and ICE dreams come true. Hope you all have a safe, prosperous, and Happy New Year!

  26. And mind you, the S Class works JUST as good... So...moot point. Right?
    1 point
  27. Well, your observations are mostly accurate. They involved some profiling and I think that, if street smart and with some of life's mileage, profiling often works. And, if it works, don't fix it! I'm not much a TV watcher, so I didn't know who they were, either. But I kept seeing them on my homepage from time to time, so I clicked on the link. They are Joe and Teresa Giudice of ... yes ... New Jersey. She was in the show "Real Housewives of New Jersey," which sounds like having one's teeth pulled to have to watch. Amazingly, these two remained married for a long time for being associated with the entertainment world and had 4 daughters. As for Joe, he got nailed for tax evasion or wire fraud or something like that (I don't remember) and was deported to Italy. That is where he now lives. I find it insulting how American media bastardizes the pronunciation of their last name, which, in Italian, means "judge." (We can't do that with Hispanic names in America.) This is what they looked like when they were young, taken on a beach somewhere, probably on the Jersey Shore. She's probably the most stereotypically Italian woman I've ever seen ... even after just getting back from Toronto! Like I said, it would be "never a dull moment" with folks like these on one's block.

  28. Exactly, they've done a phenomenal job of engineering the body on the S Class. I understand doing something different to differentiate the two but I think they...shouldn't have... The S Class has always looked great. There's no need to change the formula as much as they did.

  29. That's what I am gathering form reviews. No doubt, they went in with tech in mind and it shows and that's what is expected from a company like Mercedes. Where they did not go in, apparently, was on the visual aspect and no about of fanboy growing over it changes that fact. All this attention to the interior (too much with that hyperscreen if you ask me but to each their own) but completely dropping the ball on the exterior is simply baffling at this price range.
    1 point
  30. Umm, I'm guessing you didn't read the part about the EQS stating the smallness of the interior in an S-Class sized package. Seems to me, in this case, a frunk would be a plus, which I positive you would be touting here had they actually included one. Way to show that fanboy card here. That is a whole other level of denial to act like its shape is anything other than a boring looking piece of worn bar soap. Just about every publication out there has stated or alluded to the same issue with the exterior of the German bar of worn soap. And don;'t give us this nonsense about drag coefficient. Hyundai gets great range out of their EVs and none of them resemble the bastard love child of a worn out bar of soap and a disinterested jellybean.

  31. Where is Mercedes? They have nothing in the sub $30,000 range. You're bashing everyone else but have ignored that Mercedes has FAILED to deliver any reasonable priced EVs yet. The cheapest EQB is a 300 4matic priced at $55,400 at my local dealer and they already have an adjusted market sticker of $10K on it. Sleazy like all auto reseller's that put second stickers on the auto above MSRP.

  32. Well, it was a little sooner than I expected... Today was promoted to Director of Communication for the municipality I work for. After a few decades in I.T. and Project Management, I am stepping away from those and more into a field that I enjoy. Clearly I will still be using some of those skills in my new position, but they will allow me to finally pivot away from I.T. which I've grown tired of. In the next year I will be leading a complete rebrand of the local government including a new website. In the process, we will completely revamp the way we communicate to the community. It's going to be a fun ride and with a larger (and, frankly, more competent staff) it will also allow me much more time to spend here. I don't expect this to be a long term post, but it is a great jumping off point for where I want to go next.

  36. You have to keep eyes on the road with Super Cruise, with Drive Pilot you don't, you can do other tasks. Drive Pilot is the only level 3 system in the world. And I think the 60 kph limit is more a liability thing, not the system limits, that I suspect goes up in time. Ultra Cruise is still Level 2, it isn't even here yet, already outdated competed to the S-class before it arrives.

  37. No frunk who cares, that is really a feature nice for a pickup truck, but the EQS and every other sedan and SUV has plenty of cargo space in back. The S580 registers 65 decibels at 70 mph from Car and Driver's test, and got 32 mpg on their highway test, with a a V8. So that car is slippery too and doesn't look like a worn bar of soap. The problem with the EQS is not enough S-class. And maybe they just wanted to do more of a concept car or take chances that they can't on the traditional, conservative S-class. Solution is take the S-class body, put on EQS platform.
    0 points
  38. It's the best car in the world, in 2023 becomes the first car in the US to have level 3 autonomy as it just got regulatory approval. The S-class is the gold standard, it is the car all other luxury cars are compared to, it is what other brands try to copy.
