Porsche News: Rumorpile: Porsche's New Flat-Four Engines
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Volkswagen
Very true, I know i have posted my feeling on the small turbo charged engines and a few have pointed to versions of Saab, Subaru, etc as long life on Turbo charged engines but I still will hold off on saying they can truly replace the V8 especially in a truck or full size suv for hauling. My experience with turbo engines excluding diesel is that they do not last. I will be watching GM's V6 engine as well as Ford and Ram for how they hold up in the commercial world as well as tough home use.- 4 replies

The comments on here about FWD appliance cars does make me think back to my first car I bought out of college. 1991 Ford Escort GT built by Mazda for Ford. That pocket rocket had the insurance industry pushing ford to de-tune it and soften it up the following year. That first year of the new body style and performance showed that a FWD appliance can be fun to drive. It had a 2.0 4 engine with a 5 speed manual tranny that was a blast and got awesome gas mileage. I do believe that GM, Ford and Dodge can build fun to drive FWD appliances that do not put you to sleep like the Asian auto's. Big question is will the German Fan boy's be big enough to admit that BMW, MB, etc are behind what what bleeding edge leading by America and Asia. As the Germans push for sales, their FWD appliances will end up here in America and then you have the Toyota affect I think for those brands. I suspect the name badge snobs will have a problem with their 100K s class or 7 series sitting along side a 19-20K car.

GM's V6 is The Little Engine That Can for Five Reasons!
G. David Felt replied to G. David Felt's topic in Opinion
I wonder if we had pushed through the initial big increase in CAFE in the early 90's if we would not have had these high mileage cars now 10-15 years earlier. -
Porsche News: Rumorpile: Porsche's New Flat-Four Engines
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Volkswagen
Interesting, technology is sure allowing a shrinkage of engine size but an increase in performance. Now to see how it lasts over the long haul of the engine life.- 4 replies

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com In looking through GM's web site for interesting information, I came across the following story. Five Reasons Silverado V6 is The Little Engine That Can As this story states, the recently updated EcoTec3 V6 equipped Silverado is accountable for 20% of sales in North America. This is a 15% increase over last generations model. GM goes on to quote the following five reasons for this growth. 1) Purpose built for pickup use with class leading standard torque and towing. 2014 4.3L V6 EcoTec3 has 285 horsepower, 305lb-ft of torque. 2) For returning customers, comparable performance with much better economy. 2004 4.8L V8 (285HP / 295LB-FT) compared to this 2014 4.3L V6. 3) Saves money at the pump. 4) Innovative technology for every customer. Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing and Active Fuel Management 5) All new engine with deep strong roots. Engineered on 60 years of small block experience. GM is offering 2 years / 24,000 miles maintenance, 3 years / 36,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty and 5 years / 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. In reading the full story I find it interesting that they have truly matched the old small V8 engines for performance and a noticeable increase in MPG. With this said, the last 40 years we have seen colleges take the best built parts from the various auto companies and build V6 engines that achieved 100 miles per gallon and V8 engines that achieved 50 miles per gallon. Yet then these technology advances have just disappeared. One such example of the 100 miles per gallon solution was and is the Viking project that Western Washington University has been doing since 1970. They have to this day pushed for 100mpg cars that people love to drive starting with the Viking 1 and currently with the Viking 45 a 118MPGe car. VIKING 45 Viking Details WWU now has their entry auto for the X-Prize. It would seem that if only the government would let up on pushing for all the electronic safety devices, we could take a small step backwards to move a considerable step forwards in reducing oil consumption. So this divergent trip to the College side is what brings up my question of this whole editorial. Did the government have to pass the crazy gas laws to get the auto companies to produce fuel efficient engines? Was it possible 10 to 20 years ago to have strong engines with high gas mileage or was it only recently doable due to computer technology? As some members have pointed out here, if we were to move to high compression small engines running Bio-Diesel or CNG could we be energy independent in a green state as we push towards pure electric? There is no doubt that the auto companies are making big strides in fuel efficiency. This GM V6 is an amazing engine. Could we have done it 10 years ago making the American auto industry far stronger than it was and avoided financial meltdown of 2007?

Volt, The Best Selling Hybrid?
G. David Felt replied to G. David Felt's topic in Electric Vehicles and Alternative Fuels
I totally agree with you. My wish is that they would put the VOLT powertrain into the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain. I believe they would have a huge amount of sales in an AWD Cuv format. -

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Volt, the best selling Hybrid? Chevy Volt, Vauxhall Ampera, Opel Ampera, Holden Volt: four names yet one car sold worldwide. EV.com claims the GM quadruplet to be the best selling hybrid vehicles in the world (follow the link for more details). Based on GM’s data, an average Volt owner drives 900 miles between filling up the gas tank. This compares to many Prius web sites as well as Toyota’s data that shows the Toyota Prius owners driving an average of 450 miles between filling up the gas tank. The Volt has an MSRP of $34,185, after the federal tax credit ($7500) you end up with a selling price of $26,685 plus tax and license. This could be lower if your state offers additional incentives. The Volt has garnered the following Awards: 2014: J.D. Power: Highest Ranked Vehicle Appeal Among Compact Cars, Three Years in a Row 2014: Sierra Club’s: Leader in Strategic Vision’s 2013 Total Quality Award 2012 European Car of the Year 2011 North American Car of the Year 2011 World Green Car 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2009 Green Car Vision Award I was unable to find exact sales numbers for each model nor was I able to find a worldwide figure for the Prius. The Prius has been considered the best selling Hybrid by many web sites and magazines. How subjective is this I believe is based on who does the reporting and without firm worldwide numbers from the auto companies it will continue to be subjective. US News own review of the 22 best Hybrid cars Rankings (follow link for more details) show just how off they are compared to their readers who ranked the same cars. So is the Volt the world’s bestselling Hybrid? Would it be better if the generator ran off CNG or Diesel? What are your thoughts?

Mini News: The 2015 MINI Cooper, Now With 2 Extra Doors
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in MINI
Mini large loss in sales shows that this body style is well past pull date on the shelf. I understand a 4 door, but they should evolve the body style and focus on quality small auto's rather than moving upsize in the market. I think BMW poor handling of trying to have a model in every market segment will kill them.- 24 replies

I totally agree with you that Delphi needs to go through the same process, hold those still around accountable for their actions and contribute to the fund. This will show good corporate responsibility and good will towards raising their brand identity. More companies need to understand and support how their brand identity is perceived out in the market place.

5025 Expeditions sold last month, an almost 2000 units increase over the same month a year ago. Yes Ford Expeditions still sell. Socialist Europe has chosen to hurt everyone with their idiot tax structure and heavy death by Unions that is going on. I am willing to bet there are far more people there that would rather drive a comfy sit up high SUV than the garbage compact auto's that most are forced to deal with.

Are these the most boring cars you can own? G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy www.CheersandGears.com MSN posted a story today about the most boring cars money can buy and one common point was the lack of driving excitement and what you got for the price. Interesting is that many of these autos are also considered to be rental fleet dumps. The other clear point being made is that they are not haters of hybrids, but of the CVT transmission that makes the driving a bore. Their list starts off with number one; Mitsubishi Mirage Toyota Prius Volkswagen Jetta Mitsubishi Lancer Honda Civic Hybrid Nissan Altima Chevrolet Tahoe Acura ILX Buick LaCrosse Nissan LEAF Lexus ES 300h Chrysler Town & Country Minivan BMW 535i Gran Turismo Nissan Rogue Select I do have to have a good laugh at the MSN editors own comments on #13, is it boring or just plain offensive? So do you think these are Boring cars to buy or do you have a better list than MSN has put together?

Mini News: The 2015 MINI Cooper, Now With 2 Extra Doors
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in MINI
Now that would be a smart idea for Mini, use this new 5 door but build it as a new mini pickup. That would address the needs of many city dweller as well as suburban folks that do not want a full size or mid size truck to drive to Home Depot to get flowers.- 24 replies

G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Oregon has officially sent out notice to the world that their first public large scale fueling station is open and the official opening is June 11th. This allows drivers to get from Canada to Baja California on pure CNG only now. Not only does this reduce oil consumption, but since this is also a Redeem station, it is using recaptured methan from biowaste and trash.

Awesome Read, nice job. This is great to hear and as I have stated in another thread, I think Mary is the best CEO ever for GM, they will truly move in directions that people will be happy with and earn long term customers with quality products.
