Not just 2009, but 1999, and even 1989, that Cadillac has been fighting the same battle. Their image and public perception has trailed away past 2009.  The Allante was going to challenge the Germans and create prestige for the brand, that failed and that was 30 years ago.

In 1997 Cadillac was the #1 selling luxury brand in the USA on a 50 year streak of being #1 and today they are 7th place.  They are almost more clueless now than they were in 2009 or 2002.  They just have better engineers covering up the blatant weaknesses in product planning and marketing and R&D spending.

Yes....we both say this time and time again!

  2. To be fair, the Demon is kinda like a one-off specialty car.

And cars like the Demon were offered in the 1960s by all three Detroit area car companies

Like a 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt... only 100 were built, and all carried a disclaimer plate in the glovebox regarding the not-up-to-standard fit and finish of the fiberglass panels and plexi-glass windows.

Or a 1963 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty... with its famous drilled “Swiss Cheese” frame that was ordered on 15 cars. Power came from a special dual-quad version of Pontiac’s 421-cubic-inch V-8 that was also likely underrated at 405 hp. The engine option cost nearly as much as the car itself. The usual assortment of aluminum and plexi-glass were also specified to further lighten the car....

The Demon even mimics this as it only comes with 1 seat....(sure you could buy the other seats for 1 dollar each, but it IS marketed that it comes with ONLY the driver's seat)

It is a great way to celebrate these factory drag cars that were once part of the American scene and for somebody that cherishes those times, this is the car for him/her for that price!

Personally, a Demon is overkill for my tastes on so many levels starting with those fender flares and that giant air grabber hood. I prefer the Hellcat's more subdued look, if you could call the Hellcat more subdued. LOL!

800 plus horsepower is also overkill. So is 707, but 707 was the original mind blowin' number and the Hellcat was the first cool demonic name and logo that the name and logo that is  Demon is just....overkill and passé.

So yeah, Id forgo the Demon myself and would just get a Hellcat or Scatpack...

  3. Hold on now!!!

We like to wax poetic about Cadillac at C&G, but I see many arguments made by SMK, myself and many  counter arguments to criticize Mercedes Benz in some of the commentaries at the GMI thread AGAINST Cadillac waaaaaay in 2009!!!

But we choose to ignore the FAULTS and the REALITY concerning Cadillac!

What matters to me is ultimately performance, prestige, and comfort in a vehicle such as this.

Your suggestion of AWD only only endears me to the possibility of this vehicle, possibly more so than a RWD other. I wouldn't think that I, for instance, would consider an S8 if it were not for the fact that it is AWD.

Well, here's the problem - years ago, no one knew a thing. Now, you can google Epsilon and a Buick or Malibu pops up. People now google their prospective cars and read reviews, and the reviewers are always looking for a story - for conflict to generate. This is easy conflict. Just like the "High Value" engine debacle GM tried to foist onto Chevy.

So, the reviewers draw attention to what really is a non-issue and they take 1/3 of the article doing it. Then GM has to defend it, while the stalwarts ( BMW and Mercedes) just sit back and laugh.

In other words, if you're going to buck the trend, then you better have a good reason for doing it. Cost is not a good reason in a reviewers eyes or the public's eyes and especially in this class. There is no good engineering or performance issue for putting a Cadillac flagship on Epsilon.

Take that back - there is one. If you could say that Epsilon allows VOLTEC and Sigma doesn't. That's the only way around it I see. Otherwise GM is just on defense on launch - not a good place to be.

Contrast that to DOHC V8s. There are very good reasons for using a TT DI DOHC V6 over a NA DOHC V8. That's defendable and then you can go on offense with MPG or performance characteristics on launch even though there will still be detractors.

Yes but the cadillac flagship should not be just adequate it should surpass and exceed the competition, Like I posted in the other thread, cadillac's problem besides not having leasing is that it's always late to the party. It need to innovate not duplicate. The converj should have been here last year and the volt could have waited! Being that cadillac means"pinnacle" All of there vehicles need to be the pinnacle!! Cars and CUV's that other companies envy and strive to out do. Alas it's the other way around caddy always is following not leading! Case in point.....http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/23/r...gic-at-a-cost/

I agree ... but what you are describing is exactly what Buick is supposed to do.

Buick is the brand for folks who want a nice cars with lots of features, but don't want to pay too high a price for it. Cadillac is the upsell.

My only thought on why -- right now -- a FWD 'base' Cadillac may make sense is that there are very likely a significant group of older buyers who have been buying cars like the DTS who very likely will not be willing to "move down" to a Buick.

If GM's market research shows this to be true, I can see why Caddy would want to continue to sell to this market. But from a brand perspective, such a move should be considered a transitory effort ... eventually those buyers should be -- by elevating Buick in terms of product and branding -- pursuaded to buy Buicks.

I know you are kinda new to this forum, but this has all been covered in other threads...

First what we know pretty much for sure
    1) the XTS will be around 4000 pounds (probably a fair bit more for the AWD version)
    2) the XTS will be only V6 powered in its first MY (the NorthStar will die with the DTS/STS)
    3) the XTS will be standard as a FWD car AWD will be an option. Likely most will sell as FWD cars.

So what does that tell us?

Well first off, as soon as you put a stake in the ground around a FWD platform you limit the power capability of the car to about 300HP... more then that and its un-drivable and we don't have a transmission that can handle more then that anyway.

Second AWD systems aren't exactly light, 300HP (give or take) pushing a 4400 pound car is ho-hum in the world of luxury cars.. Out of the gate this car has two strikes against it...

Oh wait there's more, now that we know how much power and performance we are going to get, we have a pretty good idea of the price point for this car.. and what it will compete against.... Sound familiar? Sounds a lot like a Lexus ES to me. At that price point don't expect fancy self parking systems, or lane departure systems or.. you get the idea. Low end of the market. Entry level luxury...

I could go on... but it all comes down to ...
A low end car that sells a ton doesn't hurt the image, but the lack of a high end car does.. You can't flog a ES car without a LS car to make it asperational.. without the LS the ES is just a fancy Camry...

Without a Full Size "Fleetwood" the XTS will just be a fancy Impala/Lacrosse.

You build a luxury brand from the top down.. not the bottom up.

    From 2009...

The year we are in RIGHT NOW is 2017...

And the issues at  Cadillac  are the same and the XΤS is STILL sold with the same issues at Cadillac!!!

A tad less as there is the CT6 and the ΧΤ5 οn the showroom floor...

But SMK gets roasted when he praises M-B

SMK gets roasted when he says EXΑCTLY what was said by others ON A DIFFERENT FORUM WAY BACK in 2009!

I SAY THE SAME THING CONCERNING THE XTS!

Like I said: Yes there is a double standard when Americans dont hold the same standards for the German  car makers, but American Car Lovers ALSO hold a double standard as they TURN A BLIND EYE TO  CADILLAC BUT POINT THE FINGER AT MERCEDES OR BMW!!!

Balthazar, on my local Cadillac lot, all the XTSes are FWD with no AWD models at all.  I have to drive about 30 miles to find two AWD models down here in Florida.

Cmicasa is right that the current XTS predates the current Impala.  That does not mean that the XTS is any less a Cadillac than the XT5 or the CT6/CTS.  I do wonder why Cadillac is keeping the XTS when the future is clearly elsewhere, such as the CT6/XT5 and a smaller AND larger crossovers to fill in gaps.  Is it a sales thing?

    sure it is!!!!

But its only bad if Mercedes Benz does it and only bad if SMK approves of it!!!

But its OK if GM does it because the ΧΤS prints money for GM!

And yes, the ΧΤS is less of a Cadillac.

It should NOT be in the line-up ANY longer as the CT6 and XT5 NEW generation Cadillacs are here and POINTING the WAY FORWARD!!!

I even question the validity of the ATS!!!

But what may bad for the goose in faulting M-B for crappy and questionable marketing strategies is good for the gander for Cadillac for just as stupid  moves! It all depends on what side of the fence you are sitting on!

    Double standards!

  5. For the post directly above SMK's post NOT involving SMK at all!!!

I would take Montreal over any city on the continent....you are the gluiest man to live there...

    @A Horse With No Name

Montreal and the Province of Quebec and its inhabitants are far from perfect.

We have more of our fair share of problems, hypocrisies, intolerances, stupidities, corruptions, ass backwardnesses and the like.

But it seems as much as  crap we have, we get through it, we BOND as a society and try to solve our problems TOGETHER!

Sure, in the past we were NOT as tight as we are today in 2017, but that is the thing, Montrealers and the people of  Quebec in general have faced many cultural fights with many facets and culture defining moments with many facets that we are definitely very comfortable in our own skins as Quebecois today after all these changes since Jacques Cartier first navigated the St. Laurence river and Samuel de Champlain tried to do trade with the locals and Jeanne Mance and Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve settled the area known as Hochelaga renamed city of Ville-Marie to what is known as Montreal today along with the defeat of the French at the Plains of Abraham in Quebec city by the English with General Wolfe and Commander Montcalm all the way to today with 2 referendums to separate Quebec from Canada to the protection of the French language and Culture to the English lessen their stranglehold on their dominance to acknowledging the French and for both cultures embracing all other immigrants...

Lot of turmoil in there and  Montreal is 375 years old this year, so that  makes it at least 375 years of this pain, we did learn something along the way in 375 years!

And that is Montreal's birthday, French settlements and indigenous peoples history is a tad  more older than that....

  9. Montreal!

Summer is just great! Sure its humid. Its not the 'dry heat' thing I always hear about when people reference Nevada, Arizona, some parts of California, mainland Greece (the islands are humid, but Greek beaches tend to make you forget the humidity). But, honestly....who cares about the humidity???!!!

After a long hard winter (which no longer is THAT hard due to 'climate change'-whether you believe it to be true or not, whether its human-kind influenced or just a natural flow of occurrence of billions of years in the making, but make no mistake about it, it is real and there is a difference that Ive personally seen and experienced just based on the fact that 40 years ago as a child, winters in Montreal had literally more snow storms and snow falls and  more  -40F  degree weather than what Im experiencing as an adult for the last 20 years!)  we really ANTICIPATE AND GREET SUMMER WITH OPEN ARMS!

Its like XMAS and Birthdays! We await summer like we await to open our gifts!

The problem with winter is, it is too long....the definition of lasting tooo long is that the transition between winter and spring to lead into the warmer temperatures is long.  Spring in Montreal is nice....but the weather is in between. Some days the weather is your typical spring warmish weather, but sometimes it is very wintery! Freezing weather and snow and slush!

It really is not that cold....but the ANTICIPATION for the real warmth is overwhelming!

Autumn...what a BEAUTIFUL time of the year in the Atlantic east board or if you prefer North AmericanNorth East!  Leaves are changing with the nice colours, the temperature is still hot, not scorching humid hot like in July, but very very comfy, like June and August nice.  Indian Summer gets you that additional July weather but with a nice cool breeze!

This is where things fell apart. Winter started again in the last week of October in Montreal in little bursts and as November drew to a close, winter had already set in...but that is not the case anymore....winter does really start in mid December so we enjoy the Fall nowadays!

No...Montreal does not have the Pacific Ocean California beaches, or the South Atlantic Ocean South Carolina beaches or the Caribbean near South Atlantic Florida beaches or the Gulf of Mexico beaches of America's Southlands! But Montreal does have nice lakes and calm enough rivers for our water fun. We get by just good enough thank-you very much!

And what we lack from those party-on ocean beach life styles, we more than make-up for it and then some with our LIVE ET LET LIVE and JOIE DE VIVRE!!!

I feel like this 100% myself!

And I get quite ANNOYED when people say the Challenger handles badly!

    They dont handle badly!

    They are quite capable!

And...at the end of the day, they handle just as good as any car on the road today!

No....not at Ferrari or Corvette levels or even Alpha Camaro 1LE levels, but at the very least, Acura TL SH-AWD levels especially at the LEGAL LIMITS of the POSTED SPEED LIMIT!!!

And....if anything, they are eons and eons and eons and eons ahead of what the Mustang and the Camaro and Firebird of the mid1990s-early 2000s handled!

And....at the very least, are not too far away from being on par handlers with many German lux sedans of that same time frame....after all, the platform and suspension set-ups are from that same time frame...and MOPAR engineers did improve from that anyway! And I dont recall, even today in 2017, ANYBODY SAY ANYTHING CRAPPY ON HANDLING ON THESE GERMAN CARS FROM THAT TIME FRAME (1990s) WAS!!! AU CONTRAIRE....PEOPLE PRAISE THESE  CARS EVEN IN 2017!

    So yeah!

The hypocrisy and semantic driven drivel and bias is inescapable!

  11. @A Horse With No Name

Well...this thing about Ford that you have is perfectly normal.

You dont like Ford....you. dont. like. Ford. period.

No need to justify your feelings to anybody.

You wouldnt be able to talk to me outta of any brand though as I have my own biases and agendas that I deal with...INTERNALLY!

    When I buy a car...

    1. I look to GM first.

    2. then I look to all other cars and brands that are in the same price bracket and more or less same  category that fits my buying and usage needs for that point in time

    3. I narrow the list down to the  cars that best fit my needs both financially and practicality.

    4. then I buy the right  car for me based on those biases and agendas.

    5. Looks of the  car is on top of that list.

    6. "Buy American" is high on that list...GM being at the top of that "Buy American" list.

    7. Yes....cars and brands that I deem to be douchey based on stupid anecdotes and personal feelings towards a certain brand because of personal reasons as shallow as my friends being douchey because of what cars they drive and respect is a factor!

With that being said...I dont help people buy cars...people have their very own biases and agendas regarding  cars that I noticed gets to be MORE sensitive than actual talk of politics...so I just play dumb when the conversation turns to what  cars are the best and what  cars should be bought......

I talk car talk all the time...but its more on the lines of Jay Lenos Garage.

People know Im car crazy, but they also know I LOVE ALL KINDS OF CARS...but they know that  my PREFERENCE is American Muscle!

Some folks have a problem with that too! But I wax poetic in such a way that makes American Muscle cars cool and I make it known that I dont care what they think about them!

I dont really hate on brands....only on fanboys...and on SEMANTIC driven discussions where blind loyalty or BLATANT HYPOCRISY is concerned.

I was recently schooled by a member in here where I found a car to be good looking and he doesnt but he used MY argument against me, problem is....in the same thread, this person defended an out dated look on a new car while schooling me....

Irony...he used frowny faces to frown upon a car that I deemed to be good looking....

THAT made me HATE on CADILLAC just know just because THAT particular person defended the current Arts and Science theme on the CT6...because he himself is a fan of  Cadillac!

    You see...I LIKE the LC500

And YES, predator face works well on that car...

You may not like predator face on the SUVs and the big sedan....but JESUS EFFIN CHRIST!!!!

CANT YOU LOOK PAST THAT and SEE THE BEAUTY in a car that DOES NOT CONFORM to the USUAL HO HUM!!!!

THAT IS WHAT I FIND DEPLORABLE!!!

The only brand that gets  me all hot and bothered is BMW....only because my personal real life friends have put (in the past...like in the 1990s all the way to the mid-2000s) BMW on a undeserving high pedestal...and their attitude was much like what the Cadillac thread turned out!

Yeah...and those friends of mine jumped off the BMW bandwagon and are sucking on Audi's teat know!

And why do you use Lego as your argument?

To further demean the look of the LC500?

Look at those fenders from the Mopar...

Technically, if you wanna use Lego as an argument, technically, one could try to pry those fenders off with their bare hands and it would seem like they would come off and one could just go to a Lego bin and just pop in another fender...

The LCF is predicted to have in and around 600 HP...

The Lexus has 1 thing going for it...

    GREAT looks!

You may not like predator face, but it works very well with this car.  The BMW 6 Series coupe is gone and I dont think the 8 Series that will be replacing it will do any better. The 1st gen 8 Series was actually not to bad of a car with great looks but it failed in the market place...

The Lexus LC500 will probably wont displace the M-B SL class coupe in sales, but please dont say that Lexus dont have the ballz!

    1. The LC500 is actually a concept car that was put into production almost 100% intact from its concept form.

    2. You asked for a hi-po version?

Lexus will sell you one pretty soon!

  17. I dont understand the visibility is better on the fastback as opposed to the convertible.

The convertible Mustang, if I owned one, would be pretty much driven in the summer months only and when the sun is out...because I want to take in the sounds, scenery and sun of my surroundings. Therefore the top will ALWAYS be down.

I probably WONT be driving the convertible when it is raining, maybe on occasion, but all things that deal with top down driving is to be expected AND acccepted! Road noise included. But that is why one buys a convertible in the first place....

I understand, you would rather not deal with all that, but...to say that a convertible has LESS visibility than its fixed roof brethren is just...CRAZY!!!  :stupid:

Comparing visibility with the top up you say?

    :duh:

But a convertible car's life is mostly lived with the top down!!!

Why else would you buy a convertible car then???

  18. In my alternate universe, my house would change for a double garage home rather than a single garage home and the garage would be deep. The overall square footage of my house would stay the same, just the garage would be a HUUUUUGE upgrade.

    Why?

So I could have a summer car and store it in the garage in the winter! My budget for both of my cars would stay the same, 40 000-50 000 CDN, just split in two rather than one.

And Id be driving a FWD 2013 Ford Fusion SE 1.6 liter or 2014 Ford Fusion 1.5 liter ecoboost as my DD and winter car...

My wife currently drives a 2013 1.6 ecoboost. If she wants to keep her car, that is fine by me, I love her car that is why I want a Fusion myself. If she would not stand the thought of having 2 Fusions in the driveway, then she is free to choose whatever other car she wants!

For the sake of being different, she does NOT want to spend more than 30 000 dollars CDN on her car, but she did like the Buick Encore, so we go with that for this thread.

  19. Screw you Frisky and your 100 000 dollar ceiling!!! (to those that dont know, Im usually rude to Frisky when it comes to his rules in his dream car garages! When Im not rude, I circumvent the rules...)

I usually use the vulgarity when I WANT certain cars but I cant fit them in nor could I circumvent them in in any way possible!!!

Case in point:  Singer Porsches and Year One Bandit Trans Ams!!!  BOTH are WELL OVER HIS STUPID 100 000 dollar rule! And he is "FRISKY" about it too!!!  (yes pun intended!!!)

Well excuse me for a few seconds :excl:

while I throw another off air tantrum:cussing:

trying to figure out how in the hell Im gonna get a turn key restomodded pro-toured air cooled Turbo 930 look 911 and blocker Bandit LS7 roll barred '77 Trans Am in this garage...

OK....so we finally start this with Factory Five's '33 Ford Roadster with a 5.0 Coyote V8 and 2015 Mustang independent suspension. This should be a car worth 40 000 or so even with all the upgrades from Factory Five.

Im well below the 100 000 mark....HMMMMM maybe I could allocate the 60 000 that is short to the Year One Bandit Trans Am? (I wont circumvent, Ill play fair!!!)

Hot Rod flames and the like.  Candy paint job. You know, the classic hot rod look!!!

Im in the mood for one of these things today - 1970 Cadillac Deville Convertible

    Im guessing its worth about 40 000 - 50 000.

Deep candy apple red paint job, same wheels, leave the shiny chrome as is, upgrade the interior to make it look like the 100 000 dollars we are seeking. White leather interior.  Upgrade to modern suspension and brakes but keep the original motor.  Was it 472 cubic inches? Just work on the motor to make it reliable. If its not worth it, no need to go nuts on the engine, a 2015-2017 Escalade 6.2 L86 swap from a wrecked Escalade in which a cheating soccer mom trophy wife failed to do her stop sign because she was sexting her lover would do the trick. 420 HP and 460 ft-lbs is good enough....and If I do that, then all the transmission bits and power train stuff from the Escalade would be transferred to the Deville and with that...this car will now be approaching the 100 000 dollar mark.

    1969 Hurst/Olds or 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30.

If numbers matching, I continue to keep it that way, but I will drive on occasion just to hear the glorious 455 roar from time to time.

If not numbers matching, a cloned 69 Hurst/Olds or '70 442 with the usual LS or LT swaps (naturally aspirated) with about 450 or more horsepower and AT LEAST 500 ft-lbs of torque will do. Resto-modded and pro-toured and all that entails without the price tag exceeding 100 000.  It will have a more or less a hunkered down stance to handle the twisties with the proper suspension set-up to achieve this, but its primary vocation will be tire shredding, straight line acceleration muscle car fun!

Ill do my own resto-mod pro-touring Trans Am...all the bits and pieces are available from Year One anyway. The interior does not need to be luxurious either...actually, Id prefer that the interior befits a Pontiac pony car...just screwed on a tad better than factory.

Maybe a 1973, maybe a 1979. T-Tops for sure for a 1979. A '73 will be that fiery red. A '79 will be the traditional black and gold. The Firebird stays intact and VISIBLE, not like that ghost style shyte that Year One does on their official Bandit '77.

And if both the '73 and '79 prove to be too expensive because too popular, then a 1975 or 1976 does the trick for me. And in this instance, Cragar SS mags are a must!

The engine: Not too crazy...an LT1 swap straight from the Alpha Camaro,  455 HP and 455 ft-lbs of torque is plenty. Id make the Trans Am more of an all-arounder performer like the 1LE package V8 Alpha Camaro as opposed to the Oldsmobile which would be more of a tire shredding muscle car.

Seeing that an air cooled Porsche 911 930 with Turbo look and applications with a quality build like Singer as an example is beyond attainable for this dream garage, Id go for an affordable sexy Italian that is probably just as fun to drive as that 911.

2017 Fiat 124 Abarth. Exactly like the pic. Ive got an American Roadster Hot Rod with V8 power at the beginning of this garage, we might as well end it with an Italian (Japanese really) roadster with 4 cylinders.

Ill leave the car as is...ONLY if Fiat's engine satisfies me... If not, I might try to get its horsepower and torque ratings closer to 250/250 with a few tweaks here and there. I think that would be more to my liking. If I cant do that, maybe I perform an engine swap from a wrecked 2.0T Camaro or ATS...if that does NOT upset the Abarth's weight balance...there are sooooo many ifs with this that I might as well  just leave well enough alone and just enjoy her as is!!!
