  1. My sons' friend's younger sister (she's 12) sent 2600 one month. Her mother leaned on her to cut it down because it obviously was ridiculous, and the next month it was 3700. Perhaps the fad will pass by the time she gets a license. On a job a few winters ago, where 4 of us were living in the house we were working in for 3 days a week, for like 3 months, the 21-yr old kid working with us 'taught' me texting. So he & I texted back-n-forth during those 3 days, just horsing around. Mildly amusing but stupid all the same- we were in the same house. I've sent about 4 or 5 messages in the 2 or 3 years since then just for the novelty of it. Talking while driving is illegal in NJ too, but I still do it. I am able to focus on doing 2 things at once, tho; no close calls even here in DensityVille, USA.
  2. Amelia was my g-grandmother's name. Maybe never was common, certainly isn't now, and of course that's cool. Of the maybe 500 people in my family tree charts- she is the only Amelia.
  3. Just sold this for $600, shoulda brought much more but things are just too tight:
  4. The design dates to the '60s originally. I agree; a metal wheel seems loads more appropriate.
  5. Agreed- look at maybach, rolls, the attempts to bring back Duesenberg & Packard... without ferrari's input, no doubt maserati would be on the ropes again, too.... but somebody's buying them for some reason (saw another one today)- tho that's undoubtedly going to dive if it hasn't already. Rolls very well may be dead in 12 months. >>"I feel Oldsmobile is actually on temporary hiatus. At some point, GM is going to sell the rights to the name and history to some group that wants to make a "traditional American car" again. If GM doesn't sell the rights, I'm sure it's bankruptcy trustee will."<< There will never be a buyer for "Oldsmobile" in a million years, unfortunately. Not only is there not enough margin potential in the brand, start-up manufacturers are just an impossiblity anymore.
  6. I don't know how old you or the pedal car are exactly Satty, but the '65 tractor I have has a steel wheel, an all-original '66 AMF Super Sport I sold this year had a steel one.... every '60s/'70s pedal car I've seen has had a steel wheel. Only thing I would venture is I don't know how long AMF built this- if this design went well into the '70s or into the '80s, the wheel certainly could have been changed, I just doubt it from my experience. Just an FYI.
  7. Oh, I know, and the media stumbles right along after, never questioning anything. 'Bush's Republican fatcat oil buddies were raking it in, but now W's dialing it back so another R can get in.' Yup, up, evil-incarnate George Bush, controlling things impossibly far outside his influence somehow, even tho he's so mind-numbingly stupid he can't pronounce 'nuclear'. Makes complete sense, right? Gotta love how the libs never let a glaring lack of logic or raging hypocrisy hold them back !
  8. The colro chips themselves were not exact, and online you are looking at a scan of it. I have the '59 Buick paint chip sheet, and I sent a scan to a website that is still using it, and the scan & the actual are close, but notably different. There is no "Saturn Gold" listed for '70 tho- 53 is Nugget Gold. It wasn't until '71 that 53 was called Saturn Gold. My brother's '71 Goat is Code 53 - Quezal Gold Poly. Chevy, Pontiac, Olds & Buick mostly shared color palettes- same paint codes = same paint formulas, but with different names... tho each division did have a few unique colors. Cadillacs always had completely unique palettes.
  9. Although I would never begrudge private individuals to do what they will with their money, having the right to spend it does not mean it is always spent intelligently.
  10. >>"Of course, the Republicans think Americans are stupid, let's lower the gas price and they will vote for us and forget about how high it was in the past. Not!"<< So you think it's Republicans that have lowered the price of fuel ?? Care to explain how they did it ?
  11. Instead of firing up the furnace (house was 63 this morning), I'm firing up the wood stove tonight. Also scored a night's worth of wood on the way home from work (green: for next year). Hoping to really offset the (gas) furnace this year with wood power... but it's getting like gold around here and I refuse to pay for it. I might have enough on hand for this winter, might not- gotta keep my eyes peeled. Helps when you drive a truck every day tho- plenty of room for circa 8-foot logs. Got a free lunch & a $50 tip at work today- that's 7/10ths of a tank of diesel- I'll take it. That's about as best as I can do these days.
  12. Graphics may be available too; there's a surprising amount of pedal car resto stuff out there. Pretty sure this vintage should still have a steel steering wheel. I've sold a number of these over the years, including a circa '30 U.S. Mail pedal plane (a leather cord turned the steel propellor with the pedals) and a '30 Willys Overland. I have a '65 Super Diesel Tractor, brand new in the box, never assembled, just sold it.
  13. Haven't noticed one in person yet, but I am flat in love with those bed rail boxes !!
  14. Unless you are planning regular trips to hammer on the motor at the strip under WOT, OR if the engine is an extremely low-miles motor, there is usually enough accumulated lead on the exhaust seats that the motor will go well past 100K with no issues. Of course, if you are rebuilding it, go ahead & have seats installed. IIRC, one year of the 425 had circa 375 HP.

  16. Thanks for the link, DF. Never said it was made up, just asked for context. Relax. And just as I thought - there was ZERO mention, even in jest, of killing Iranian citizens. Olds- why did you claim that ?? It's completely legitimate to categorize a country's militant force under the name of the country, IMO, esp when it's an obvious joke. For Pete's sake; McCain was singing it !! Yet he is being lumped in with Ahmenijhad as '2 peas in a pod'. Ludicrious; a ten mile-long taffy-pull here. RE: Reagan- yea, there was some minor flap, but it never confused the questionable taste of the joke with a serious intent to actually destroy Russia. Here, wackadoo Obamaniacs are running around, bug-eyed, screaming 'McCain is going to wipe Iran off the map, it's on youtube !!!!!'. >>"And anyway Balthy, I am trying to show how stupid the "We won't sit down with the Iranians without preconditions" tactic is. The Iranians could do the same to us."<< This is a standard practice in international negotiations for a reason. Just stumbling into a room with nothing on the table beforehand is foolhardy- I'll not trust a single person to ever do that, esp when dealing with a raging madman.
  17. First pair of sunglasses I got fell from the driver's visor of a '64 Merc Comet coupe in the junkyard- mirrored. I've bought similar style pairs ever since, last pair was $14. They last me about 2-3 years, but I'm hell on everything around me (clothes, shoes, sunglasses). I found out I cannot wear a wristwatch; apparently I move thru my surroundings with prohibitively close tolerances. I wear stuff until it's dead and then some. Temporarily back in glasses after punching myself in the eye the other month (I kept getting on my nerves, so I had to put me in my place), but I've worn contacts for about 25 years now. I can also snap my fingers, whistle, wiggle my ears and cross my eyes independantly (all at once if I'm feeling particularly rambunctous) among numerous other feats of self control. I cannot justify overpaying for something on the off chance it's 13 times better than a servicable alternative.... because that's a quality gap I've never, ever seen in actuality. On the other hand- I don't ever shop in WalMart, either.
  18. >>"Two years on, Halcro and Knowles admit they are still baffled by how their mastery of policy and state issues was trumped by Palin's breezy confidence and feel-good answers. "When you try to prove she doesn't know anything, you lose, because audiences are enraptured by her," Halcro said. "And her biting comments give you a sense of how competitive she is. Anybody who doesn't take her seriously does so at their peril.""<< Interesting piece- can't wait for the debate. I was watching some Reagan youtube moments not long ago - demeanor & wit can carry a lot of weight for a candidate.
  19. >>"Back to what I was saying though, it's truly amazing how much limit they've put on thier campaign, and now it's going to be even more amazing how much that backfires because people truly want to know."<< BO's Occidental college transcript : sealed. BO's Columbia Unv records : sealed. BO's client list as a lawyer : sealed. BO's record with ACORN: sealed. BO's papers from the Chicago Anneburg Challenge w/ Bill Ayers : sealed. BO's papers from the state senate : sealed. BO's health report released : 1 page. I'd like to know...
  20. Yea, but how many cars are you going to buy? You did state 'Cadillac is next', or was that someone else? If you like the CTS, why do you worry about what other cars GM has or doesn't have that you aren't interested in? -- -- -- -- -- >>"...the past is gone..I'm living for today and tommorow."<< The past is as gone as much as tomorrow never arrives. One's plans for tomorrow --in as much as a certain chain of events is predictable, which is to say it's not in the least-- can have as much effect & guidance on 'today' as recognizing & valuing (not "living in" ) the past. In fact, the present always builds upon the past - even in your industry that must be true. The future is the only intangible of the 3. It's all in how one looks at things. But to dismiss the past entirely is to stick one's head in the sand. Don't get me started on your blatant stereotype of liberals/conservatives.
  21. They both have shaved handles as the only body mod. Besides the aftermarket wheels/lake pipes, the black beauty adds scallops & dummy spots. Both are mild yet still red hot. Love that 'batwing' roofline! Still want to build a B-59 'camino one day... you know; right after I hit the lottery. Curious- do you know where the factory 'ElCamino' scripts were- front fenders by chance? Trying to remember the tailgate on a '60 I saw... but this was about 6 or 8 years ago now.
  22. >>"Biden is probably the most qualified Senator in international relations."<< Well, if he gets in, perhaps he'll be able to impliment his plan to split Iraq into 3 segregational territories. That'll shut up the doubters.
  23. I believe I got it right here, neatly : >> www.59elcamino.com << Imagine that !! How do you like this one ? I'm really not a Chevy guy, but daaaaaamn!
  24. >>"Technically, you're correct about 70's Caddy's--but you and I both know that there were no significant real differences."<< Not in construction techniques perhaps, but if that's your criteria of reference, why not just say 'Cadillacs of the '70s were nothing more than shiny Fords or Plymouths' ?? The bottom line is your post attempted to portray '70s Cadillacs as simplistic rebadged Chevys, whether you spelled that out exactly or not. That sort of BS is not going to fly; be straight. >>"No unibody construction, no engine advancements, no trickledown to give---other than electric doodads---what did Caddy do then that really matters today? Where was the art of car building advanced?"<< These things mercedes had earlier than the '70s. MB had unit-body construction in the '50s, tho they were far from the first: Nash, Chrysler, Lancia, Opel all had it earlier still. So what was mercedes' advancements during the '70s? Were they just 'shiny Nashes'? They sat on their laurels, too, by your definition. -- -- -- -- -- >>"As an aside, Balthy's posts always crack me up, he reminds me of a know-it-all, grumpy 75 yr old guy that's always whining about the young kids of today and how things were better in 1950 or whatever... I am surprised that he's apparently in his '40s..seems much older from his posts."<< And as to your posts, sir; they always remind me of a wide-eyed idealistic teenager, whinnying about how NEW!! and BETTER!! really is the be-all, end-all just because the box sez so, and whining about how yesterday is so 'yesterday' and nothing from last week is worth a cup of spit... I am surprized you are coming hard up on 40 when you seem much, much, much younger from your posts. :P I'm only a couple years ahead of you moltie, but I've observed & been keenly interested in a great many elements of the past throughout my life, so I have a plethora of first-hand impressions to draw conclusions from RE 'then' vs 'now', most esp. about automobiles, but hardly limited to that. Car-wise; there's a TON more case studies out there other than '69 'stangs.
  25. Nice one, Rich! But as Camino stated- this is being blown out of proportion. The number of people in trouble WRT home values / potential foreclosures is a small minority vs. everyone else... yet the 'news' reads like EVERYONE is poised to live in Tent Cities while 200 million houses sit empty. "Equity=gone" will come into play if you still owe the bulk of what you borrowed to get it. Not EVERYONE is upsidedown, and wouldn't it be refreshing for even ONE story to lay out actual figures so Joe Schmo can get his own grasp on the extent of the situation? Don't hold your breath.
