C&G Wants to Know Volume 1 - CAFE Our first installment of "C&G Wants to Know" is sure to be an interesting one. Anyone not living under a rock knows by now that new CAFE standards are in place that will require all auto manufacturers to have a corporate average fuel economy of 35MPG by the year 2020 while meeting intermediate milestones along the way. GM seems determined to meet these standards with an innovative approach befitting one of the world's most storied manufacturers, but a little help from the C&G faithful certainly wouldn't hurt. Your task is to establish a unique plan for GM to meet the new standards while continuing to produce vehicles that fit American tastes and demands. Parameters 1. You may use any GM platform with any green technologies that GM has available now or in the not too distant future. 2. You must keep each GM brand on track with its current mission statement. A fleet of Opel Corsa-sized Hummers won't do 3. You are permitted to cut exactly ONE car and ONE truck from each current lineup, if need be. However, use this rule with caution. Cuts should be made only for the sake of CAFE (if you cannot bring the vehicle in line with Rule #1), not for personal preference, etc. 4. The expected price increase of each car should be kept to a minimum so that the increased cost at purchase time is offset by the reduced cost of fuel consumption. Well, there you have it. Take your time and prepare your responses carefully, and most importantly, have fun NOTE: The "To GM" forum has the moderator preview feature turned on, so you will probably not see your post immediately after you submit it. After the mods check it, it'll be released to the public.

von, you may need to adjust your rear drum brakes. My brakes lost a little stopping power gradually. At 25K I had them cleaned and adjusted (I didn't know this was the problem or else I'd have done it myself), and it feels better. Not sure what you're talking about with the torque delivery. My car pulls pretty strongly. Try dumping a bottle of injector cleaner in your next tank of gas, and check the fuel filter. The previous owner may have run cheap gas through it.

Agreed with Oldsmoboi. Train travel offers much of the benefits of driving without the associated hassles. You get to see the country without worrying about getting cut off, getting pulled over, or having something go wrong on your car. When you factor in the fact that you have to get to the airport 2hrs early, and you're probably at the destination airport up to an extra hour getting through people-traffic and getting your luggage. Amtrak is a much more appealing alternative for short hops. A move to high-speed rail is a must IMO.

I'll be in the minority and predict a collapse like in the housing markets. Not sure if it'll be sooner rather than later, though. $4 even when I filled up this past Saturday. I guess I'm thankful that I can pull 28mpg in city driving, but it still seems wrong that a 145hp 4cyl 2800lb car that gets 28mpg city requires $50 to fill up. I will be using the bike as much as possible this summer, for errands and for training.

Sure, we can do that for you. No problem. On a completely unrelated note, everyone will now be required to pay a $5 per post fee to C&G due to rising fuel costs and other miscellaneous unforseen expenses.

In the meantime, I have something for you right here. We've always said that we're the home of GM's Biggest Fans and Toughest Critics. The caveat is that criticism has to come from a desire to see the company do well, not go bankrupt or get steamrolled by Toyota as retribution for past sins. So here's the opportunity for anyone who doesn't approve of GM's direction to step up to the plate and put their money where their mouths are. Tell us how YOU would fix GM if you were in the CEO's seat.

My only gripe about the G8 is the lack of a folding seat of any kind. I'd love to be able to carry a bike in it without resorting to a bike rack that's certain to damage the paint. That may pigeonhole me into getting an ST, which isn't the worst scenario in the world. But other than that, the G8 sedan is absolutely fantastic, and it's very hard to make a case for a reasonably loaded Camry, Accord, Altima, or Malibu when a poor man's 5 series can be had for the same price.

We don't even get our oil from OPEC. This is like suing Chevy because the tailgate on your Tundra just gave out.

The dashboard doesn't tell you how much oil you have. It only tells you how much oil pressure you have. What you're describing sounds like an oil pressure issue. Almost every oil pump I've heard of is mechanical and driven by the crankshaft. It could've seized from sitting, or something plugged it. Either way, you now likely have something seriously wrong with the rotating assembly. Drain your oil. If you see silver shavings in the drain bucket, don't bother troubleshooting any further. You've ground your bearings and need to either overhaul your engine or get another one.

Nice Cobalt j/k..but seriously, can you look behind the twin-port grille and see if there's a Chevy crossbar there? I've always been curious but never daring enough to walk onto a Pontiac lot and do the same thing myself. I had a Cobalt sedan rental for two days this week - a base car that was beat to snot and badly needed tires. Despite all that, it still felt every bit as fun as mine. Enjoy your G5 and I hope you have many happy, trouble-free miles with it

8 is high for anything that wasn't driven home from the dealer and parked right in a garage and stored ever since. If it's mostly in good shape that needs no painting/bodywork and some mild mechanical reconditioning, 5 or 6 may not be a bad offer. The thing to consider is that G bodies that aren't donked, slammed, or turned into ghetto dragsters are becoming harder and harder to find.

Trust me when I tell you that the bike industry has thought of something for every excuse imaginable.

Sixty8 Three words: Get a bike! No, seriously. I'm not sure about your location, but I'm fortunate enough to be able to run 90% of my errands within 10 miles of my house. That's easily doable on a bike without breaking a sweat. If your living situation is like mine, buy an old 10 speed off of craigslist or from a garage sale, get a rack and a trunk bag, and you have your infiniti-MPG grocery getter. Save the Banana Boat and the B-59 because you love them so much.

I think that given the public perception that "GM=producer of gas guzzling SUVs" and,"Prius=even better than sliced bread", over-PRing the Volt, as ridiculous and tiring as it can sometimes be, is probably their only recourse.

Anytime you need some help getting that Prius up a hill, I do carry bungee cords on my road bike and can give you a tow for a small fee. j/k Now would be a perfect time for Fly to drop in and express his opinion of Toyota drivers.
