  1. As the former owner of a 55 Chevy, I'm just happy to see it make the list. 55 FTW! Chris
  2. G8 slightly used ought to be about 22-25k in a year or two, about $425-445 per mo if you finance it, Pauli. Probably a bit more than you want to spend, but it would make a very nice car for you. Although there is a little of Sixty-Eight in me and somehow I always picture you driving an Italian Car, like an Alfa Milano or an old GTV. Chris
  3. I'd like to come, BTW, great pics. That early 70's red vette is to die for, and the silver first gen MONTE is awesome. Thanks for sharing this...it really made my day. Chris
  4. Things haven't been good here, for sure. I miss a lot of people...sad, really. Maybe the newer car you can save for is a 39 Lasalle, which will be newer than Oldsmoboi's model "A"? Seriously, I used to be just like you, only with houses. I lived in a Craftsman Style bunga low, and the newest thing in the house was built in 1915, swore I would never buy a newer house. But I realized I needed a better neighborhood and a school district, so we built a new four bedroom house 7 or 8 years ago and have lived there since. Next house I am going to build is going to be a re-creation of a Craftsman Style bungalow with all of the "issues" of the previous house fixed. Great pic of Sofia BTW, reminds me of when my daughter Joanna was 4 and riding in my 55 Chevy... Good luck with whatever you do, sixty eight. Chris
  5. The wheels are going to come off of the whole thing pretty quickly, IMHO. Chris
  6. We need to attack it from both the left and the right. We need, for instance, real financial help for the gifted Science student when she comes from a poorer family. The governmetn can do that. We need individuals to give to individual charities. I'm not religious, per se...but the notion that "God doesn't give a man more money so he can go from a Chevy to a Lexus, he gives them more money so a family in Africa can get one step further from starvation" goes along way with me. Chris
  7. +1 Chris
  8. Ohmygosh...I am not a fan of bigger cars but this thing is really cool. It has a lot of syle and presence. If GM can make money selling 25,000-50,000 a year and keep it here, more power to them. IMHO this is the kind of car GM needs to be building. Chris
  9. I wouldn't want NAV in one. I wonder if the blackberry color carries over...the FIT looked excellent in that. Although the Cobalt is really growing on me also, I am almost ready to get in the market for one. Chris
  10. I know what you mean, Camino. Neither party seems to be close enough to the center to relate to the things americans really want. I've been going door to door for the obama campaign, and a lot of people share your level of disgust with our political process. Personally, I'd vote for a third party candidate before I'd vote for McCain. I don't trust the man at all. Chris
  11. Exactly....this is the largest of many failings of the Republican party over the last 30 years. Chris
  12. You'll smell a lot more $h! if McCain is elected... Chris
  13. Somewhere West of Laramie...yes there was, they were the people I was thinking of when I saw this thread. Chris
  14. My wife's aunt used to be a mail carrier and had a right hand drive Subaru. It was fun going through a drive through with a large dog in the left hand seat....really kind of freaked the girls at the window out to see a large dog supposedly driving a car... Chris
  15. How the hell anyone votes Republican with the shape our nation is in is beyond me. Hopefully Ohio will push it over for Obama. Chris
  16. Because we won't spend the money to upgrade our rail infrastructure. The Japanese bullet trains run MUCH faster and have an almost flawless safety record...they are willing to spend the money on a proper rail system, we are not. Chris
  17. +1. Chris
  18. ...and yeah, blu it was an EXCELLENT review. Chris
  19. ...no, they shouldn't. Not everyone wants a large, V-8, RWD car, and if America is about the freedom to enjoy a V-8 land yacht it can also be about the freedom to enjoy a small car. Let me give you this wildly improbably scenario...Julie, your wife, invents a carb that lets any 50's or 60's or 70's V8 RWD car get 34 MPG. The Martians exist and have quietly stolen every 50's, 60's, and 70's Hardtop American V8 car that was going to be crushed back in the day, taken it to Mars, and performed a nut and bolt resto of amazing quality... I can be teleported to Mars, have my pick of these cars, and put it in my garage. I can have up to four cars in my garage, lets say, and all 4 can be from the "Martian collection." I'd have a nice 66-67 442 Hardtop Olds...along with a Volkswagen GTI, a 240Z, and a 34 Ford street rod or something. I like old RWD land yachts but I also like other cars. Given that most of the cars (RWD, Hardtop, non-special interest) of the era are in anything BUT the aforementioned perfect shape, and that I wouldn't really want to put my wife and family in a 68 Bonneville that has spent its life in somewhere like Ohio or mAssachusetts, esp. not on a long distance trip out of state... I think I see a Fit in my future. I don't really see one in yours, but I also don't see a Cord or V16 Cadillac either. Chris
  20. Actually, let me take a different tack altogether. I love cars...I have since I was six or 7. I turn 43 Today, and I've owned maybe seven "special interest" cars and about 4 or 5 daily drivers that I have loved. Who knows how long I'll live? Who wants to waste their time worrying about how long they will live? I want to spend the rest of my days enjoying cars. The Fit is a great City car, and along with the Cobalt and a few other cars (VW Diesel Jetta, Pontiac G6 retractable, Saab 9-3, Mazda RX- I am actually thinking of buying one for my next car purchase. VW diesel-Love diesel cars, love the local TDI group. Pontiac G6 Convertible-love convertibles, heres one available cheap nearly new on the used market the whole family can enjoy. My kids are always bugging me about a convertible that at least 4 people can ride in. Saab-great interior, love the aviation heritage. Mazda RX-8-love the idea of a Rotary, but if I buy an RX-8 I'm gonna buy a clean used 4th Gen TA for those times I actually want this thing called "Tourque." I've driven an RX-8 on an Autocross course and they handle great...but I'd still like to build a 3rd-4th gen Camaro or TA set up to turn, turn, turn. Cobalt-I am actually starting to see some real genius to the design, built here in Ohio, affordable, safe, perfect for a family that will soon have a couple of teen drivers. I like Sixty Eight's idea of a 60's or 70's car...But I've owned a 70 Chevelle and a 71 Chevelle, and that kind of scratched the itch for a 70's car. The 66 Mustang fastback kinda scratched the itch for a 60's car, and my 55 and 57 Chevy's kinda scratched the itch for a 50's car. I am really thinking that if I buy another "collector" car it will be one of about 6 things. 1. Another Mustang, this time a 67-70 Ragtop. 2. Break the bank when the kids are older and buy a 58-62 Corvette. Still a ragtop, I love this body style 'vette. 3. Original 240Z Datsun. 4. Restored stock Ford or Chevy from say 1932-1936-7 or so. I just love cars from this era. 5. Buick Grand National. 6. Caterham Lotus 7. This is an off topic ADDish post, but...I love a lot of different cars, and I think people miss out when they only own one type of car. I think it would be healthy and fun for Sixty Eight to enjoy a small, modern FWD car that handles well (Volkswagen GTI perhaps, or Mini Cooper S) Moltar to own a big old land yacht, Carbiz to own an old elegant British sports car (Healy 3000 perhaps, for an elegant drive with you and the BF?), and Siegen to own a domestic V8 RWD muscle car. All of these cars are fun in a different way. You boys owe it to yourselves to try something different and new and not get stuck in a rut... Chris
  21. Congrats on the new car to your friend! Chris
  22. I hope she doesn't come early. My son was born early and spent several days in the neonatal intensive care unit. Thankfully he is now ten and doing fine, but being born ealry is not something I'd want to see anyone face. Maybe keep the raodmonster and save for a newer car, then fix the B-59. Chris
  23. Personally I'd buy a Cobalt. Newer, probably much less problematic and lower miles, etc. I have an 18 YO and a 15 getting ready to turn 16 YO, so I am thinking Cobalt, but I had the same Bonneville thought you did. Chris
  24. Well spoken! Chris
  25. Exactly...why I am not much of a Dog person. To me Dogs are hazzards to joggers, cyclists, people who want to keep their yards nice, motorcyclists, children, etc. Plus they are sometimes loud and destructive. There are days I think I could actually handle dogs going extinct. I don't really have a problem with dogs, just the idiots that seem to own them. OTOH, my very good friend Ric has a $h!su (sp) which is a great dog. Hard to argue with a dog with a personality that good, and he loves to ride in my Miata with the top down. Chris
