  1. I suppose to be sure its not an electrical problem, I would check the wiring from the glove box button and remote receiver to the solenoid... but my thinking is that a short would not make it pop the trunk, it would stop the unit from working at all. I really haven't heard of too many people having the remote systems activate spontaneously. Is it just the trunk? Does it just happen at home? I'm going to go with a different idea... did someone else in the neighborhood get an additional GM car? While GM may boast of a plethora of remote security combinations, there are a lot of GM cars out there and they do repeat. Perhaps someone has a remote using the same key. I don't know the specs for GM's remote systems, so I don't know the exact chances of this happening. I suppose you could get an idea of the radius involved and just ask around... the remote shouldn't be good for more that a few hundred feet. I suppose you could clear your remotes and add the current remote back. Perhaps a long-lost remote is the one being triggered. Its funny you post this problem, as I recently was going to do something like this on purpose... My Bonne remote is getting flaky, and I have a spare "broken" remote for my sister's car. I was thinking of building a FrankenRemote and programming it to my car. Sure, if the cars were together, remote usage would get confusing... opening both sets of doors, popping both trunks...but they seldom are in the same state, let alone same driveway. Someone who has actually done the remote programming may be able to shed more like on this.

    Shit Son...

Well, I would assume its right in the database (MySQL?), and that you have access to that, either from MySQL port or via something like PHPMyAdmin. Changing a largely insignificant field like that likely won't hurt anything... but you want to leave indexes and stuff alone.
  3. I disagree because the Mark VII and Mark VIII were both pretty sweet cars. I really prefer the VIII, but the VII got rave reviews for years in the '80s.
  4. The tech options I want aren't offered. I want a Linux based car-puter that automatically streams video/GPS/running statistics to a off-shore colocation where I have my servers at. I also want one of those '50s style "extra wheels" systems that allows you to drive sideways into a tight parallel parking spot. A smoke screen/oil slick option would be nice, too. On demand. I already have cars that leak and smoke constantly. ;-)
  5. I like the Pope-mobile style glass box at the front... and the Independent Rear Wheel.
  6. Well, restoration costs money. Its not like it needs a concours restoration. You have a link to someone making brand new '54 trucks? (Dynacorn don't count). I also would say its not too far gone for a Hot Rod restification. But its not getting any better sinking in the field.
  7. Well, at least that hideous roofline and plastic triangles are finally gone.
  8. Well, that's part of my point... Camino can use a truck double duty. I have a full size van... an old Blazer, a box van and a dumptruck if I want to haul loads. I don't need or want a truck. What I need is a fun to drive car that I can fit comfortably in and get in and out of without a hassle. The only modern cars I have that fit the bill... the '99 Bonne and '95 Caprice are both on the disabled list and have no current production counterparts.. or won't soon. Nearly everything is a 4-door, which, for me, feels like I'm trying to climb through a pet door... and 4 door SUVs are like climbing up through a pet door on the second floor. Nothing fits behind me, as the seat is always as far back as possible and usually in a ghetto lean-back position... and I still have hardly any freedom of movement. If the vehicle is less than 75" wide, my shoulder is over hanging the passenger seat. If I turn the wheel too fast, someone is going to get elbowed in the face. I drive in fear of any accident, as any cabin intrusion is space I'm already using. Again, I'm not freakishly large... but I'm at the 99th percentile. And I have a lot of friends who are of similar size... but they just buy a huge SUV. They are not going to be happy if they can't continue with that bliss.
  9. For me, a daily driver truck is a major overhaul in thinking. Trucks are for work... I don't want my commute to be work. I like having a proper trunk and car-like handling and comfort. Dropping a truck into the weeds tends to make the ride harsh... and I worry about the end result. I like keeping my rides shiny side up. ...and seeing that the regulators have their eyes on trucks all of the sudden, I can't help but think that honeymoon is over in a few years.
  10. I know the feeling. Between shrinking engines, too many doors, wrong wheel drive and tiny interiors, I just don't know what I would buy right now even if someone else was footing the bill. Even if I do the unthinkable and get a late model truck... sports trucks are too big and heavy. Give me a modern SS454 shorty truck that can be dropped intot he weeds (with a LS7 or something). I really want something older, but it seems like every year the project cars get exponentially rougher and rougher...
  11. Its like 1985 all over again in Aussie land for GM. Still have a good hold on the market... but are thinking of switching the most popular car over to FWD... and I'd say it will pan out about as well there as it did here when GM destroyed their mid and large size RWD platforms in exchange for FWD. After 1988, it seems GM's only true success (both critical and sales) came with trucks. GM could have saved a bundle by just withdrawing from the NA car market. If GM can't leave Holden alone, they should just sell it and withdraw from Australia. Otherwise, its more billions of dollars wasted to try to force people into cars they don't want... RWD is what keeps Toyota from finishing off the conquest of that market.
  12. Two things... first, I think due to the large number of items that could be voted on, it seems that placement in the list helped some entries. Second, because people could vote for a large number of entries, I think people were more flexible with their voting... leading to many of us voting the same way... and therefore, lots of ties. In the future, I think we have to limit the number of entries one can vote for... or have a two stage election. Unlimited entry selection for the first round, one entry vote in the final round.
  13. Oh, Really? I thought the Ideapad Tablet thing was pretty neat... but I'm afraid it might be too gimmicky or delicate. I really put my laptops through hell, and I expect them to last 5-6 years... usually running nearly non-stop. The latest batch of Thinkpads from Lenovo have left me unimpressed, build-wise. I have been pretty loyal to IBM Thinkpads for a while and was happy to see Lenovo continue on... but I fear my hopped-up Z61P will be the last of the breed for me. They will stay in the running, assuming they keep the trackpoint and some decent video. The W701DS makes me drool. Also important to me, is the ability to continue running Linux on my laptop... and I've heard the latest Lenovos are a bit trickier to get set up fully working... I love the idea of running a massive Xen cloud system off a 16G laptop. LOL. My GF recently got a i7 based Dell Studio 17 about 8 months ago... and its a pretty sweet setup for the $$, and so far has demonstrated itself pretty hardy. Its going to be very hard to compare the high end Thinkpads to it, if I'm spending my cash... I hope to still milk my Z61P for a couple more years or con the next employer into getting me a monster Thinkpad.
  14. I think those photos are from Atlantic City recently. ;-) Seriously, there were a few spots where the snow piles were carved like that over 5' high. I'll forever remember the '96 storm. I left Atlantic City to pick up my sister in Bethlehem in the middle of the storm in my $200 '86 Buick Fullsize wagon...a ~4 hour round trip turned into a 10 hour saga. IIRC, Bethlehem already had a bunch of old snow piled up... so I was astonished to see her car was parked in a spot already carved out of a 6-7' tall drift. By the time I was returning to Jersey, 322 past Turnersville was about 2 foot and completely untouched... luckily, the Buick had the clearance to make it. Dropped my sister off at Dad's house and she had a 100 ft slog through 2' of snow. My alleyway in Ocean City had 4-5' drifts that I had to repeated ram to get through. Next day, the poor car wouldn't start... opening the hood, it was packed with snow that I had to clean out and let dry out before it ran again. The past storm was bad, and in many ways surpassed the '96 storm at the shore... and, as usual, I ended up needing to drive in the storm. I never feared for my life, however... during the overall drive in the '96 storm, it was more insane and I sincerely feared disaster was everywhere, as any screw up would leave one without rescue... there were NO people around most of the trip. And remember... few cell phones back then.
  15. I really like the Reeses, as well. But I also like the normal orange-cap Skippy (with honey). I grew up on Skippy only, so I'm pretty loyal... but the Peanut Butter company has a few really good flavors... such as the White Chocolate. Deviating from Skippy is what got me a jar full of Peter Pan Salmonella flavor... Passable... but not worth the 3 day recovery. I just can't get into the naturals and stuff that start to separate... its just too much of a buzzkill to have to mix the peanut butter for a half hour before using it... I almost wish I just could throw it into a paint shaker for a bit. ;-)
  16. After two 30 mile (one way) trips, one during the storm and one after the travel ban was lifted, I have to say that NJ did a pretty good job of clearing the streets... even though they started off kinda slow. It was pretty surreal the amount of snow left in some areas, though... spots where you normally have two lanes its 3' high snow for a few hundred feet... just a colossal volume of snow... on the road. I guess the DOT needs more big loaders, as a good deal of this snow is beyond what a plow can push. Two things seem to cause the biggest disasters on the roads... First, its open fields.... What I don't understand is... whatever happened to people installing snow fencing?!? The road will be clear for miles and then all the traffic comes to a stand still because a field has allowed a snow drift to continue to form in the middle of the highway. Years ago, fields had to install snow fencing... is that a farm requirement only? And as farms become residential McMansions, the fencing is no longer required (or even allowed by the HOA)? I think if we're going to continue to get a blizzard every year, we need to look into deploying these again. Second... why can't the DOT plow drivers clean up the intersections better. They plow across an intersection and leave 2' high trails for cross traffic to have to battle... and completely ignore those small right turn ramps. Again, the whole road is clear and all of a sudden the turn ramp you need seems virtually unplowed... and with limited visibility and no room to merge, it becomes a game of Russian roulette... you have to blast down the ramp full speed, because if you get hung up, you're F'd. I realize we take responsibility for handling the roads if we need to go out in this mess... but at the same time, we're paying big bucks for these services to clear the roads... and I hate seeing 95% of the problem areas being caused by situations that could be easily fixed.
  17. Never heard of these guys... I find the name kinda interesting... Marussia Ma Russia Mother Russia Coincidence?
  18. Depending on the source, we're up around 22" just north of Atlantic City. The drifts are crazy. I always get a huge drift in the front yard... but this time its stretches to the street... about 3'-4' foot deep the whole way. The backyard is completely full of snow 32-42" deep. No longer can I open the door... or find the propane grill. 8-0. State of emergency in NJ... you can get a ticket/tow if you're caught driving for no good reason. Thankfully, the snow has finally tapered off. But the radar shows we still have a bit coming a little later. You're near Lewes? I thought you were further north.
  19. Looks like I underestimated... NOAA puts us at 14-15.7 inches 2 hours ago. 8-0 I really hope I don't have to even go outside to sweep off the satellite dish... its really nasty.
  20. Along the South Jersey shore, you really can't accurately tell the depth... I have 4-5 drifts in most of the yard and wind scoured ground in others. I'd say we're past 10 inches now. Roads out to the other house and back are a disaster. You see plows driving around but little snow being moved. The Bonneville did more plowing than the plow trucks, as the snow on the road was 7-8 inches in spots, and the Bonne only has 5 inches or so of ground clearance. Safely ensconced in the house now... should be fun to repeat it all tomorrow after it stops. DF, I told the storm to say 'Hi' when it gets up to you... ;-)
  21. I'm not liking the looks of this storm. Could see a foot at the one house and 18 inches at the other two. I swore I was going to buy a snowblower this year and I never had the chance... this is where I'm going to pay DEARLY.
  22. My '95 LT1 didn't call for special gas... and never had anything but 87. I think that it the Vettes or F-bodys thing that required premium.
  23. Well, that soldier only leaked a small bit of footage, and was acting as a whisleblower, considering how outrageous the footage is. That soldier has lost his career and likely his freedom and/or life bringing that footage to light. The rest of the Wikileak stuff, if I understand correctly, comes from other sources. Of course, its all a moot point leaking it now... while he has not leaked all his info, he has already released an encrypted version of the data, in case something happens to him, a decryption code would be leaked to unlock it. Well, at this point, regardless if that key is released or not, SOMEONE out there will crack the code... it may not be in 5 years or 50... but it will happen. Pandora's box is completely open, but more don't know it yet. I'm with Ron Paul on this one, so far... more government transparency could have prevented this. By making everything top secret, they have less resources left to protect our true secrets.
  24. This is why the terrorists have already won. :-(
  25. Yeah, had a similar problem with the Sunfire. The clip holding the wire to the hinge popped open and the stuff in the trunk pushed the wire into the crimping part of the hinge, cutting it like a wire cutter.
