IMO a DI 2.8L for export models (maybe replacing the non-DI 3.6L in the US as well) and a mid-level V8 would be key, but the DTS/STS successor has to be taken care of first: a V8 CTS (non-V) runs the risk of obliterating the STS. Also, progressively aligning the CTS with the 5-Series opens up space (i) for a BLS successor, and (ii) for Buick and Pontiac to have some breathing room with regards to pricing. Cadillac can only dream of being able to price the CTS as high as the 5-Series. It will take quite a few years of very consistent product to get there. It can be done, but it will take time, money and commitment.

I saw a dark gray BLS today (Dutch plates). It actually looks nice in the real world.

All I know is the Saab 95, 96 and Sonett had V4 engines, and it's used in motorbikes and boats nowadays. I don't have a clue as to why V4 engines haven't had more applications in cars.
