    Geneva Motor Show: Range Rover Evoque With A Nine-Speed

    The new trend in improving fuel economy is adding gears to the transmission. We've been seeing a number of vehicles equipped with eight-speed transmissions, but Land Rover is one upping the competition by introducing a new nine-speed for the Range Rover Evoque.

    Developed by ZF, the ZF 9HP nine-speed transmission will take the place of the Evoque's current six-speed automatic. The new nine-speed automatic is lighter than the outgoing six-speed, provides better fuel economy and lower emissions, and improves the Evoque's off-road capability (if you decided to take your Evoque off-road).

    The ZF 9HP nine-speedfeatures such tech as a adaptive shifting system that customizes that transmission whatever driving style, skip-shift function that avoids the need to move through the gears sequentially, and "Fast-Off" and "Curve" modes that offer two different ways of upshifting.

    The new nine-speed will be available on the Evoque starting in 2014.

    Land Rover To Demonstrate The World's First Nine-Speed Automatic Transmission

    (MAHWAH, NJ) February 26, 2013 - Land Rover will demonstrate the world's first nine-speed automatic transmission for a passenger car at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The ZF 9HP transmission is designed for transverse applications, and is one of the most efficient and technically advanced transmissions ever used in a production vehicle. Land Rover is the lead partner with ZF on this project.

    Increasing the number of gear ratios from six to nine will help reduce emissions and improve efficiency. Smaller ratio steps also give improved response during acceleration, with improved shift quality and refinement. A higher top gear improves efficiency by lowering engine speed, which also improves comfort and reduces noise when cruising at highway speeds.

    The 9HP is quite robust and complements the all-terrain capability expected of a Land Rover vehicle while delivering exceptionally high levels of refinement and efficiency. The lowest ratio in the 9HP is lower than the existing six-speed transmission and is designed for off-road use, towing, and on-road conditions like steep gradients.

    Whereas the existing six-speed transmission makes downshifts sequentially, the 9HP has a skip-shift function for much swifter downshifting to meet rapid deceleration demands. If the driver requests a downshift when the vehicle is travelling too fast for the selected gear, the transmission will remember the request and make the shift when the speed drops to an appropriate level. "Fast-Off" mode measures the rate of throttle release, anticipates further requests by the driver for high power, then holds the gear if necessary.

    The torque converter incorporates a multi-stage damper system for smoother pull away and improved refinement. An innovative adaptive shifting system matches the driver's mood within seconds, sharpening up during brisk driving and then seamlessly shifting to a more economical program when taking a more relaxed driving approach. Additionally, "Curve Mode," detected acceleration/deceleration forces, and pedal position all control upshift timing.

    The 9HP is masterfully packaged and despite the extra three gear ratios is only 0.24 inches (6mm) longer and actually weighs 16.5 lbs (7.5kg) less than the outgoing six-speed transmission. The compact packaging is achieved by using a number of innovative design features: A new compact hydraulic vane-type pump, two patented dog clutches replacing bulkier conventional clutch packs, and a nested gear set.

    Land Rover and ZF are on-going partners in transmission development; having jointly developed fully integrated transmission solutions in the Range Rover, Land Rover LR4 and Range Rover Sport. The new nine-speed transmission will be produced at ZF's Gray Court facility in South Carolina, USA.

    With the different modes and skip shift, it will be interesting to see how this drives. I find that even in some small displacement manual shift cars, the low end torque is enough to skip shift during normal driving. In the Sonic RS, if you were driving in normal suburban speeds I would go 1-2-4-6

    I agree Drew, it will be interesting to see how a CUV 4x4 will handle this kind of tranny with skip shifting. I am wondering how it will handle the torque needs when or if someone takes it off road. Pretty pricing if you have to send in the tow truck on the back 40 of some lumber road or worse a true rock crawling area.

    Well the Evoque is a soft-roader. It's probably the most capable of the breed and will go places no CR-V or X3 would dare to tread, but it is still no rock crawler like its biggest brothers.

    Gravel roads/driveways and curb jumping is probably about the only off road action it will see in the real world (same as probably 99% of CUVs and SUVs)..

    Wonder if when you have two very different type of drivers how it will handle the skip shifting since one might be a light foot versus one with a lead foot. This would really change the shift points.

      In light of fresh competition in the form of the refreshed Toyota Tacoma and new Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet has announced some updates for the 2017 Colorado.
      First is a new 3.6L V6 producing 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque (up 3 horsepower and 6 pound-feet). Changes to the engine include a revised direct injection system, updated variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation. We can't help but wonder if this is the same engine that resides in a number of Cadillac models. A new eight-speed automatic transmission is hooked up to the V6. The transmission features a higher first gear (helps with towing or hauling a heavy load) and lower rear axle ratios will improve fuel economy.
      At the moment, we don't have EPA numbers for the V6 or pricing details. We do know the 2017 Colorado will go on sale later this year. Expect a similar announcement for the GMC Canyon in the near future.

      Chevrolet Colorado Resets the Bar for Midsize Segment
      2017 model updated with all-new V-6 and class-exclusive eight-speed automatic DETROIT – For 2017, the Chevrolet Colorado offers an all-new V-6 engine and class-exclusive eight-speed automatic. It is the latest major update for Colorado, which entered the market for model year 2015. Chevrolet is on track to sell more than 160,000 Colorados in the first 24 months on the market, reigniting the midsize segment.
      “Customers made the Colorado an overnight success and it remains one of the industry’s hottest-selling products,” said Anita Burke, Colorado chief engineer. “That fast success has justified our continued investment in midsize pickups, introducing new features for our customers such as the class-exclusive diesel engine, advanced technologies like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and now a class-leading V-6 and eight-speed automatic powertrain combination.”
      Class-exclusive powertrain combination 
      The most significant update for the 2017 Colorado is an all-new V-6 engine and eight-speed transmission, creating a combination that’s unmatched in the midsize segment.
      According to Stan Ludlow, chief engineer for the 2017 Colorado, the engine and transmission were calibrated to emphasize performance and refinement while optimizing fuel economy: “The Colorado is currently the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in America, with an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway when equipped with the diesel engine. As such, for the new V-6 and eight-speed combination we focused on improving everyday driving performance. Drivers will immediately notice that it pulls harder when accelerating from a stop or passing on the highway; it is more confident pulling a trailer up a steep grade and it is more refined cruising at a constant highway speed.”
      This second generation of Chevrolet’s double-overhead-cam engine architecture retains the same 3.6L displacement as before, with an updated suite of advanced engine technologies. This includes improved variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, improved direct injection and for the first time, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation), which disables two cylinders under light throttle applications. Horsepower and torque increase to an SAE-certified 308 hp (230 kW) at 6,800 rpm and 275 lb-ft (373 nM) at 4,000 rpm.
      The engine is mated to the class-exclusive eight-speed automatic. The GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L45 is roughly the same size and weight as the 6L80 six-speed automatic it replaces. However, the eight-speed automatic offers a wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread than the 6L80 transmission’s 6.0 ratio. This results in a numerically higher first gear ratio, helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering, and numerically lower rear axle ratios that reduce engine rpm on the highway for improved efficiency.
      Extensive use of aluminum and magnesium, combined with similar packaging to the outgoing 6L80 transmission, equates to no increase in overall weight for Colorado models equipped with the new 8L45 transmission.
      The 2017 model year updates, including the new V-6 and eight-speed combination, will arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year.

      Luxury automakers are finding it difficult to make the business case for building V8 engines. Stricter fuel economy and emission standards, along with sales of V8 powered models dropping have them wondering if they should continue work on developing new variants.
       
      Take for example Jaguar Land Rover. The current V8 in naturally-aspirated and Supercharged forms has been with us for 20 years. While the company has been trying its best to keep the engine up to date, the thirsty nature and possibility of it not meeting future emission standards has the future of V8 up in the air.
       
      But Automobile reports that a deal is currently being worked out by JLR and BMW for the German automaker to supply V8 engines to the British. The possible engine is a new 4.0L twin-turbo V8 that promises to be more powerful, fuel efficient, and lighter than the current V8s on offer from either automaker.
       
      Why is BMW making a possible deal with JLR? Most likely it comes down making a stronger business case as to why they should go forward with developing a new V8 engine.

      Jaguar Land Rover U.S. May sales increase 8 percent for best May sales since 2003 With nationwide retail launch of XE and F-PACE, Jaguar jumps 80 percent for best sales month since 2006 Land Rover May U.S. sales dip 8 percent from record 2015 May sales; up 12 percent year-to-date (MAHWAH, NJ) - June 1, 2016 -- Jaguar Land Rover today reported May 2016 U.S. sales: Jaguar sales were 2,164 units, an 80 percent increase from 1,204 units in May 2015; Land Rover sales reached 4,950 units, down 8 percent from record sales of 5,382 units in May 2015; Jaguar Land Rover May U.S. sales for both brands hit 7,114 units, an 8 percent increase from 6,586 units in May 2015 and the best month of May since 2003.
       
      Year-to-date in 2016, Jaguar Land Rover U.S. sales are up 14 percent to 39,191 sales from 2015   "We are very pleased that through five months of the year, we have increased our business for both Jaguar and Land Rover brands," said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO, Jaguar Land Rover, North America, LLC. "The Land Rover brand continues its momentum from a record setting 2015, and Jaguar has taken off with the expansion of the Jaguar brand into two dynamic new segments with the Jaguar XE and F-PACE which are now on sale."   U.S. BRAND HIGHLIGHTS   Land Rover   For the month of May, Land Rover sales hit 4,950 units sold, down 8 percent due to lower retail inventory on certain models. May of 2015 established a new all-time May sales mark of 5,382 for Land Rover in the U.S. Year to date through May, Land Rover is continuing to grow with sales up 12 percent to 30,943 versus 27,669 in 2015.   For the month of May, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport were the volume leaders hitting 1,044 and 1,563 units sold, respectively.   Sales of the Discovery Sport hit 630 units, up 43 percent from 440 in 2015.   Diesel powered versions of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport hit 358 units, accounting for 15 percent of total Range Rover and Range Rover Sport sales for May.  
      Jaguar   For the month of May, Jaguar sales were 2,164 units, an 80 percent increase from 1,204 units in May 2015; making it the best Jaguar sales month since May 2006.   May marked the arrival of Jaguar's two new entry luxury vehicles: the 2017 XE compact luxury sedan, starting at $34,9001, and the 2017 F-PACE compact luxury SUV, starting at $40,990*.   With less than a full month's sales, the Jaguar XE hit 598 units sold and the F-PACE hit 666 units sold. In the month of May, Jaguar retailers nationwide held customer launch events to introduce the new generation of Jaguar vehicles.
