More Details On The Acura ILX

Yesterday, Acura announced they would be showing three cars at next month's Detroit Auto Show; a concept version of the NSX, a new RDX, and the ILX sedan. Now, we have learned some more information about the upcoming ILX.

As we have reported, the new ILX will be using the Honda Civic platform as base. But don't expect it to be a re-badged Acura.

"All the suspension settings will be tuned to be Acura. Consider it as different as the TL is from the Accord or the MDX is from the Pilot," said Vicki Poponi, American Honda assistant vice president for product planning.

The ILX's engine lineup will include a 2.0L direct-injection four, the 2.4L four found in the current TSX, and a 1.5L hybrid powertrain.

Acura has also announced the new ILX will be built at Honda's Greensburg, Ind., plant, which currently builds the Honda Civic.

New Acura Sedan to be Built at Award-winning Plant in Greensburg

Indiana plant to build its first Acura model - also the first ever U.S.-made hybrid model

    GREENSBURG, Ind.

Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC (HMIN) today announced that it will be the exclusive manufacturer of the Acura ILX, an all-new luxury sedan going into mass production in Indiana in the spring of 2012. The new Acura ILX sedan will be positioned at the gateway to the Acura lineup and will be offered with both gasoline and gas-electric hybrid powertrain options. The new Acura ILX will be Acura's first-ever hybrid model, as well as the first Acura model to be produced in Indiana.

"Building this all-new Acura vehicle as the exclusive global source is a big responsibility for our associates," said HMIN President Jun Nishimoto. "I am very proud of what our Indiana team has accomplished in such a short time, and we have great confidence in our ability to produce a world-class luxury vehicle that exceeds the expectations of Acura customers."

The Acura ILX will join the TL sedan, ZDX crossover vehicle, and the MDX and RDX sport-utility vehicles as the fifth Acura model produced exclusively in North America. Acura finished second among all luxury brands in the J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Initial Quality Study.

HMIN was recognized earlier this year for its outstanding quality as one of only three automobile plants globally to earn a Platinum Award for outstanding quality based on the results of J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Initial Quality Survey℠ (IQS). The plant recently added nearly 1,000 associates to support the move to two-shift production, which started on Oct. 24, 2011, doubling the plant's capacity to 200,000 vehicles per year. The Acura ILX will be the first hybrid vehicle to be made in America at a Honda plant. Gasoline engines for the new Acura ILX will be produced at the Anna, Ohio, engine plant of Honda of America Mfg., Inc.

Acura will unveil a concept version of the new ILX sedan at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit during media preview days, Jan. 9-10, 2012. Acura also will debut a new RDX sport-utility vehicle and a concept version of the next-generation Acura NSX supercar at the show, as it moves to further strengthen its product lineup with new products, new technologies and a sharper brand focus.

The Cimarron returns!!! This will no doubt be a sad car, but Acura was never going to compete with the Germans, so at least they realized that and have aimed low. They are better off matching up against Buick, and to some extent Volvo, VW and Chrysler.

Lincoln will probably be going this route soon too.

The biggest single mistake that Acura ever made was canceling the Integra.

My friend lost interest in Acura after they canceled the Integra and she had to go elsewhere to get a replacement. She never did like the TSX for some reason.

    • That is the 'shark fin' you finally recognize........ I think if the Equinox EV is priced well (considering incentives and subsidized leases) I think it has a real chance to move in some volume.  Its shape is a little more un-GM (looks a bit like the Kia EV6) and may resonate with the lower end EV buyer more.  It appears to have a lot of room inside, and a really good dash layout. Let's see if GM scales back production numbers WAYYY back or if they decide to subsidize the living daylights out of their EV lines and just produce a lot of them.  They should do the latter, the rate of EV adoption is going to be slow for awhile again.  We are likely to see all of these new GM EV's pretty much untouched for the next ten years (except for batteries and motors).  They can't kill any of these models because they would receive backlash after the EV1 axing.  They'll just have to plan for like a 10 year production run of all of the models.  Which is fine.
    • The new Traverses make me double take as I think they are a Tahoe at first but then something in the back of my brain will click and say "WRONG". The difference between Equinox EV and Blazer EV is range, performance, and sportiness.
    • I had seen first of the new traverses about 4 weeks ago but forgot to load pictures here . Lot trolling just now. The equinox EV is here now , not sure why we have the Blazer EV then since they are about the same interior size. Silverado EV in work truck trim sure looks meh.    the new traverses here I’ve seen have been front drive only, explains why they haven’t sold yet. Anyone here is snow country will look to get AWD.
    • Latest Update My wife and her sister wanted to go to Yakima Washington as the Cherry Harvest has officially begun. We like a small family farm that also runs a roadside business selling cherries, apricots and peaches from their farm with an assortment of locally made food items. Prices are pretty cheap compared to retail. The trip is a 321-mile round trip drive over I90, down Highway 82, up into the foothills and back. I plugged in the EV9 so we had a 100% battery pack to start with, we headed out. I was already sitting in the back seat when we arrived to pick up my sister in-law at 6am and realized the space was great looking at how much room I had from my knees to the back of the seat. As my wife loaded up her sister's stuff, it dawned on me that the middle row of seats is fully movable and I went ahead and moved them to their farthest back position gaining even more leg room. We stopped in a little town of Ellensburg for breakfast before heading over to Yakima. My wife always says I have the lead foot in the family for driving fast, but after looking at the Kia app and seeing what the current trip average speed was, I was not surprised to see her averaging a little over 85mph.  While at breakfast my wife did comment on how local driving did not use at much power as highway driving. As such, I told her no need to stress, we would stop at the local Walmart in Yakima where an Electrify America station was that had two 350 kW chargers and two 150 kW chargers. We plugged in and went into the Walmart to do some shopping. It took exactly 15 minutes to reach 80% from a starting point 16%. Kia's stated 220kW max charging speed is clearly underrated as I hit 250 kW charging speed with no problem and my Electrify America experience continues to be a very positive one. Noticing that the Fruit stand did not open for another 25 minutes, I continued to let the EV charge reaching 97% battery capacity before we left to head to the fruit stand. Charging cost was a whopping $29 rounding up. Having picked up the fruit that my wife and sister in-law wanted we headed home, dropping her off at her house and then on to our house arriving by 1:40pm after having left the house at 5:30am. Achieved a 321 mile round trip road trip, 12lb boxes of cherries in both frigs in the house. We have now put on 3,151 miles on the EV9 and still loving it.
