    BMW Australian Exec: “Never Say Never,” To A Pickup

      A BMW Pickup? (And no, not an M3/M4 one)

    There are days where we find ourselves wondering what goes through the head of executives of German automakers on some of the things they say. For example, BMW Australia’s Managing Director, Marc Werner told Motoring there could be a BMW pickup.

     

    “Never say never,” said Werner when asked about Mercedes-Benz's upcoming truck. “We’re watching the space closely.”

     

    “It’s easier for Mercedes [to bring a ute to market] because they have commercial vehicles and trucks and vans. We do not.”

     

    If BMW was to go forward, Motoring speculates that the tie-up with Toyota could grant them access to the HiLux truck.

     

    These comments are the complete opposite from those made by BMW Group’s senior vice-president of Asia, Pacific and South Africa, Hendrik von Kuenheim.

     

    “Definitely not, because this does not fit to our genes and our culture.”

     

    “There is huge potential in pick-ups. In North America you look at the Ford F-150 pick-up it is the best-selling car. You can do it but then you cannot be BMW. You have to be a different company, but this company is not ready to change from the ultimate driving machine and the ultimate successful company in luxury to a mass manufacturer who goes after the volume of pick-up trucks. Despite that the Ford F-150 is one hell of a vehicle. If you have that in a twin-cab version it is a great car. But that is Ford,” said von Kuenheim.

      We've been reporting on Ford's upcoming truck, the Maverick since 2018. The truck would sit underneath the Ranger and become the entry-level model for the brand. Now, we have gotten our best look at what it will look like.
      The Maverick Truck Club forum got its hand on an image showing a prototype Maverick on the line reportedly at Ford's Hermosillo, Mexico plant. Up front, the Maverick borrows some ideas from the Bronco Sport with C-shaped headlights and a horizontal bar splitting the grille. We don't know if Ford is planning to offer any cab configurations aside from the crew-cab seen in the photo.
      Ford did not immediately reply to comment on this when reached out by Roadshow. 
      The Maverick is expected to use the C2 architecture which underpins the new Escape and Bronco Sport. Autoblog speculates there could be two rear suspension setups based on spy shots that show a mule with twist-beam style setup with no rear differential for the front-wheel driver version. A slightly beefier setup might be used for the all-wheel drive version.
      Right now, everyone seems to think that the Maverick could debut as a 2022 model year vehicle.

      The rumors that have been swirling around for the past year have been laid to rest this morning. General Motors announced that Hummer will be returning as GMC-branded electric pickup truck boasting 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph will take three seconds. Those hoping for details about battery capacity, charging, and price will need to keep waiting until May 20th when GMC will officially show off the truck. Before then, GMC will preview the truck in a thirty second ad during the Super Bowl on Sunday.
      “GMC builds premium and capable trucks and SUVs and the GMC HUMMER EV takes this to new heights. We are excited to debut our revolutionary zero-emissions truck during the biggest night in TV advertising," said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC in a statement.
      Production will take place at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant, with sales beginning next fall.

      The spot juxtaposes the staggering anticipated performance metrics of GMC’s first all-electric truck with the remarkable quietness inherent in the operation of an electric vehicle.
      The GMC HUMMER EV truck will showcase the GMC brand’s design and engineering potential, and will feature:
      1,000 horsepower 11,500 lb-ft of torque 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds “GMC builds premium and capable trucks and SUVs and the GMC HUMMER EV takes this to new heights,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC. “We are excited to debut our revolutionary zero-emissions truck during the biggest night in TV advertising.”

    • You want a Dark Sky Elevation Crew Cab Standard (6.5') Box Duramax, right?  I punched into GMC's locator and searched 250 miles from my zip, I saw zero trucks in that combo, I did see one for $48k with the short (5.5') box though (maybe I am wrong on your favored combo, or I skipped over it in the locator).  I know it is a pain waiting for a factory-ordered vehicle, I've been there.  I'd be doing the same thing you're doing.  If you can find the right one, snatch it up!    
    • Pretty informative, I think the last minute starting @15:45 is one of the best parts. "Watts to Freedom" mode 🇺🇸👍🏼 There really is a crazy amount of Tech. in this beast.    
    • In your line of work, things don't appear to be that cyclical ... or maybe I'm wrong about that.  STEM is typically a good route, if you're cut out to do that type of work.  Good luck with your selecting an offer that works for you. I'm thinking you lived "Office Space" at one time or another.  That movie never stops being funny.  And, for me, the icing on the comic cake is the wound up Middle Eastern/South Asian character with the great accent.
