    Rumorpile: GM Trademarks SS... Why Now?

    When you think of Chevrolet, one of the first things that comes up is the SS. The nameplate that signifies added performance on a Chevrolet model has found more than a million homes since the first SS model, the 1961 Impala SS was introduced.

    So it seems a bit odd that General Motors decided to trademark the SS name this year. Someone uncovered a application filled by GM on April 13 trademarking SS.

    So what does this mean? Well, most everyone thinks that reason why GM trademarked SS is due to it being using as a designator, and there have been rumors that a civilian version of the Caprice PPV will hit the market and simply be called the SS.

    Well I too would have thought they had this one wrapped up too but then again I have seen were GM has had to go back to protect some names from the past that they missed where they lost ther lock on it.

    GM may have locked it in as a model name for the new sedan as some are thinking.

    It could be they did some stronger links to the name since they may be planning a more expanded use for the name.

    It could be a lot of things as with the way things have gotten so legal anymore it gets real crazy.

    I see the cars as LS, LT, LTZ with SS and Z models for selected models. I still don't want a Spark SS or Suburban SS where it is appropreate is fine. then offer the over the top cars as a Z model like the ZO6, ZL1 an ZR1 already do.

    The LTZ is luxury while any SS needs to turn stop and accelerate in class leading fashion to earn the tag. Cylinder count and what wheels driven do not matter if it is class leading performance. The Z models need to be near or at super car performance.

    ...indicates that the recent trademark is just for the LOGO.... Course, if that IS the case, it is interesting, to me anyway, that the C&D writer is quick to point out that everyone seems to have missed the fact that the trademark is for the logo design, NOT the name of the car ... yet, HE fails to recognize that, in its press release, Ch#$r%*et did NOT specify that the new name is one that "isn't currently" being used in the lineup. The writer makes that statement. BUT, the press release simply states a "new name to the brand", which leaves it to be interpreted as a new name NEVER before used in the brand.

    Just sayin'.

    • Heh heh..I'm 55.. can't believe 60 is so close.  After 25+ years of mostly driving Grand Cherokees, I do enjoy driving my Cadillac sedan.  But it is a handful in tight parking lots due to the overall length, long wheelbase and AWD.   Had to make a few 25 point turns in tight parking lots in Beaufort, SC and Savannah GA on my vacation....as I was driving around those cities with their colonial-era narrow streets I was wondering what it was like in the 60s-80s with the huge and downsized but still huge B-bodies, C-bodies that were common then... a lot more scratched bumpers and door dings then, I suppose.  I have no idea how people park full size double cab/crew cab pickups in cities, but I see a lot of it.
    • Saw that California is approaching $10 a gallon in the major cities, high 8 to 9 elsewhere, at this point, EVs are going to come out winning even with the higher cost. Course with all the EVs coming off lease and like many of my coworkers are are picking up Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 at roughly 40% of the original MSRP, the price of electrical rates with the car rate and low mileage on the EVs, makes these 300 mile EVs a deal imho. Agree, News was covering the near $10 a gallon in California, and I see tonight NY is hitting the upper $8, so EVs are going to really come out ahead, especially when one buys a certified pre-owned lease return imho.
    • On the off topic subject of tires, got a set of Firestone Firehawk all season tires last month to replace the Bridgestone Potenzas that were getting close to the wear bars on the Cadillac.  I drove more last week (2051 miles) than I drove it last year (1750 miles over 2025). It's at 63k now.  Will drive it more this year.   The Jeep will probably need a new set of tires before next winter, at 52000 miles and 8+ years on the current Michelin Defender XT all seasons. Probably will get a new set of the same.  Drove the Jeep about 3000 miles in 2025.  It's at 83k now.  Still have a few years left on the 15 yr/150k extended warranty.  Working from home and using a lot of home delivery really cuts down on the miles. 
    • The CrossClimates will be the next set on the Chrysler.  Albert blew out the right rear on his set of Blizzaks on Thursday and it was unrepairable, so the whole set is getting covered by the road hazard warranty. BUT I also have summer tires, so I ran back home, got those, and had those put on. Albert is at 25k miles a year lately and though that will calm down eventually, it's going to pick up for the next 6 months, so I expect him to burn through the summers by the time October rolls around. I'll trade both sets in (they gave me back 3 of the Blizzaks) and get a credit towards the CrossClimates. They'll be the last set of tires I put on it because we'll trade out of it around 130k - 140k once Mopar will no longer warranty it. I don't feel like buying two more sets of tires for it.  I hear great reviews about them. Sure, but in the end the EV comes out ahead. Also, random bombings in the middle east don't significantly shift the monthly family budget. 
    • Cool little video, thanks.  The music sort of reminds me of ... never mind! Arlington, Texas was the final assembly point for both of our family's Cutlass Supreme coupes.  I thus have a fondness for that GM plant. I spent way too much time in college going to check out cars - from classifieds, at dealerships ... Had I not done that, I could have graduated magna or summa!  Maybe ...
