    Genesis Plans On Performance Models, But Isn't Sure Which Model Should Be First

      Yes, Genesis is planning to have a range of performance models. No, they are not sure which model will be first.

    With Hyundai and Kia working on their own performance lineups, it should come as a no surprise that Genesis is planning a line of high-performance vehicles. But Car and Driver reports that Genesis isn't sure what model should get the treatment first.

     

    “On the Genesis lineup, the whole thing is still in discussion. Before [the lineup is] fixed, we’re not making any decisions on performance cars—the lineup needs to be clear, and it’s still moving and fluid,” said Albert Biermann, Hyundai-Kia’s head of performance development.

     

    One type of vehicle that has been thrown out are SUVs. Biermann explained that stricter fuel economy and emission standards have put the question as to whether these high-performance vehicles will stick around in the coming years. Also, he doesn't see a market for these vehicles.

     

    Not helping matters is trying to figure out what would power these high-performance models: a internal combustion engine or hybrid powertrain.

     

    “The road map for the next three or four years is clear, but at some point you have to make sure that, with future mobility and all the emissions targets, that you have the technology out there. A lot of discussion is going on about the timing of switching away from pure internal combustion to hybrid or plug-in hybrid. That’s the same for the high-performance applications,” said Biermann.

     

    Car and Driver doesn't have a guess as to what could be the first Genesis vehicle to get amped up, but we bet the upcoming G70 is a safe possibility.

    They need to start with the basics: powertrain and handling. Those have been the consistent shortfalls of Kia/Hyundai products. Their best RWD cars are solidly 5-10 years behind in those respects. They only seem to know how to build wallowing luxo barges that punch below their weight in acceleration. Anyone cross shopping products in the $40-70k range will find better alternatives.

     

    With that said, the Genesis brand has potential. They seem to be coming into their own with design and interiors, and they have a compelling turbo V6 available soon. They're a brand worth watching.

    The G80 would make the most sense since it is already in production, and they just need to turbocharge the 5.0 V8. 

     

    A turbo V6 for the G70 or whatever the Genesis Coupe becomes would make sense, the Genesis Coupe should get the 5.0 V8 because then they can sell it to Mustang fans that love 5.0 badging.

      Genesis was hoping to have a one-two punch for the U.S. with the launch of the new GV80 crossover and redesigned G80 this summer. But the COVID-19 pandemic has screwed up these plans. Automotive News reports that Genesis has pushed back the launch of both models to the fall.
      A Genesis spokesman told the outlet that Genesis couldn't get the two vehicles into EPA testing to have them certified for vehicle emissions. The labs that perform the tests were shutdown due to COVID-19.

      Genesis unveiled their dramatically redesigned G80 last night and it is quite the looker.
      The updated mid-size sedan boasts new design traits that first appeared on the GV80 crossover such as a larger, pentagonal grille and quad head and taillights. The most striking part is towards the back where Genesis' designers have given it fastback shape - no, it doesn't make it hatchback before you even ask.
      Moving inside, the G80 finds a balance between poshness and simplicity. From the photos provided by Genesis, the G80 looks to be available with leather upholstery, open-pore wood, and metal trim. Two large screens are used for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Thankfully, Genesis does provide a number of control options such as touchscreen for the infotainment system, a number of physical buttons and knobs for various systems, and a controller knob.
      Two turbocharged engines will be available for the G80 in the U.S. A 2.5L inline-four pumping out 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque will serve as the base engine. One rung up is a twin-turbo 3.5L V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both come paired with an eight-speed automatic and the choice of rear or all-wheel drive.
      The new G80 went on sale today in South Korea and plans to ship it over to the U.S. sometime in the second-half of this year.

      On the side, the Parabolic Line, which begins at the front Quad Lamp and gradually runs lower to the rear through the top of the door, is inspired by the elegant look of several venerable classic cars. Based on the "Beauty of White Space” concept inspired by traditional Korean architecture, priority is placed on the careful balance of personal space with state-of-the-art technology. This allowed the design team to optimize the layout of needed controls with calming, luxurious surfaces.
      Visibility was enhanced by minimizing A-pillar thickness and rearview mirror dimensions, utilizing flag type side mirrors and reducing dashboard height. The resulting ‘panoramic view’ gives the driver a relaxed view of the road ahead and the sense of openness when seated.
      Dividing the steering wheel into lower and upper halves, Genesis distinguishes the upper (panoramic area) and lower part (control area) to optimize intuitive use of the vehicle as well as the view ahead.
      The steering wheel and sleek, thin air vents run across the passenger compartment splitting it into the panoramic area above and the control area below. The number of hard buttons and switches was intentionally kept to a minimum, both for aesthetic purposes and ease of use.
      In the panoramic area, a heads-up display, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch infotainment system display necessary information while driving.
      The control area is equipped with an intuitive suite of interfaces: a Genesis integrated controller for HVAC controls, a rotary-operated electronic shift dial and touch-and-write infotainment system.

      At an event is Seoul, South Korea yesterday, Genesis finally unveiled their new GV80 luxury SUV.  The overall look of the GV80 has been leaking out on the internet for months, but we finally get the full official release now.
      The interior and exterior of the GV80 is designed with a common thread to give a familial look with the G70, G80, and G90.  The GV80 introduces a new quad headlamp design that will eventually filter out to the other vehicles in the Genesis lineup. The crest grille first seen on the G90 is here too. The interior of the GV80 focuses on the "beauty of white space". The designed accentuated the width and space of the of the interior with wide horizontal lines and thin air vents.  In the center is a 14.5-inch split screen infotainment display. Genesis intentionally limited the number of hard buttons and switches for aesthetic reasons. The GV80 comes in either 5-seat or 7-seat models. On up-level models, soft materials cover every surface from the inside of door handles to quilted knee pads that line the lower sides of the console.  The transmission selector is a dial in the center console. The integrated controller can be operated by an onscreen keyboard or by handwritten letters. 
      Trips in the GV80 are designed to be stress-free. It gets equipped with a Road Active Noise Cancellation technology to reduce road noise. The system is one of the advanced and fast responding systems in the world. The electronically controlled suspension with road preview helps maintain a smooth ride by recognizing road imperfections ahead via a front camera.
      The GV80 is based on a unique new rear-wheel drive platform, while all-wheel drive is available.  In South Korea is till be equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine while the U.S. will get a choice between two unspecified turbocharged engines. All-wheel drive models in the U.S. will be equipped with an electronic rear limited slip differential.
      There is a host of safety and driving assistance technologies in the GV80 including Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning, Highway Driving Assist II, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot collision Avoidance Assist, Rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, and driver attention alert warning. In the event of a collision, there are 10 airbags, including a center mounted airbag between the front occupants. 
      The 2021 Genesis GV80 will go on sale in North America later this year.

    • You listed 'XTS' twice, so your list would be '6'. The ATS and CTS are still right there in the catalog, they just have new generations with altered names, so your list drops to '4'. SRX was replaced with a new generation product with an altered name... so your list drops to '3'. Now add back in the brand new models XT4 and XT6. That's a net cut of ONE. Don't you need to be decent at math to work in a loan department? Those would be "failures" by your definition. You mean one of the most brutal & acclaimed performance sports sedans of all time? The one that burst into the German segment, up-ended their comfort levels and stole their market share? That 'strategy'?
    • Cadillac tried that strategy 15 years ago and it failed and they keep going for it and kept failing.  I want a Nurburgring carving auto, but most people don't buy cars like that.  And Porsche, BMW and Mercedes already have that market covered.  Cadillac needs to forge a new path.  Cadillac spent 15 years trying to be German, failed at it, time to try being American.  And interestingly enough the only successful product they made in the past 15 years is the most American and most like an old school Cadillac. With an aging population (and an overweight America) I think cars/SUVs that are easy to get in and out of (proper ride height) that are roomy and glide over bumps in our deteriorating roads and have good torque for smooth acceleration would do well.  EV's give you torque, roomy and quiet interior, so going al EV gets them half way there, if they can put together the other half and get the marketing.   Because not only has it been a long time since I rock and rolled, it has been a long time since Cadillac made a good ad.
