    Rumorpile: Holden Plans A Big Bang for the End of the Commodore


    • A 600 horsepower, supercharged V8 in a Commodore?!

    The clocks tick down before the end of the rear-wheel drive Holden Commodore and Australian production. But Holden has plans to end it with a bang.

     

    News Corp Australia has learned that GM has given the go-ahead on Holden using the LS9 V8 from the last-generation Corvette ZR1 for special edition model. Producing 600 horsepower, this limited edition will be the fastest Commodore ever built. The sedan will only come with a six-speed manual as an automatic wouldn't be able to handle all of the power on tap. HSV will be tasked with building this fast Commodore. The total production amount is said to be less than 250 sedans.

     

    Holden declined to comment on this report.

    So bigger question is could the SS also get a limited run of special Chevy SS Supercharged 600 ponies?

    Special editions are usually always done to cap off the product cycle.

     

    Some of them are not really special, but value packages like Nissan's tried and true Special Edition thing they do in the last model year of a car.

     

    Or it can be like the Ford Focus RS kind of deal, they would always develop the previous RS well into the model generation.

     

    I mean they already make the LSA powered Commodore. So maybe they'll give it some Z/28 bits here and there and the more potent LS9. Alright....it'll be faster around a track than GT3's and Nissan GTR Nismo's.

    Why does GM always save the best for last?

     

    Because it is the progression of marketing and odds are the next performance model not mentioned yet at Holden will be even better. 

     

    It is not to secret that the C7 will get a mega car before they move to the C8. Word is it will have well over 700 HP.

    I say that because of cars like the 1996 Impala SS, the 1988 Pontiac Fiero, and the 1987 Buick GNX all hit their stride on the last model year of production. GM could have kept making those cars, made a lot of money, and made a lot of customers happy.

      Holden is doing something quite special for buyers of the final Australian-built Commodore. CarAdvice got their hands on an email sent from a Holden dealer showing that customers will have the chance to pick a build number on a first come, first serve basis for the Commodore.
      Here is how the ordering process will work:
      On April 10th, eligible customers will get a test email from Holden to make sure they have the correct email. A week before May 3rd, customers will get access to a landing page along with login credentials On May 3rd at 12 PM, customers will be able to log in and a build number, 1-1200 for Motorsport 1-360 for Director 1-240 for Magnum All numbers will be on a first-come, first-served basis. This will last until May 10th. After this, the remaining numbers will be randomly allocated to owners who didn't pick a number. We haven't heard about an automaker doing something like this before. But it shows that Holden wants to end local manufacturing on a somewhat postive note.

      We know Cadillac is planning a major product offensive beginning with the XT3 crossover next year, along with a few other products such as a seven-seat crossover and a competitor to the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA. Automobile Magazine reports that Cadillac is planning eight all-new or redesigned models by 2022. They include,
      XT3: (Compact crossover) in 2018 CT3: (ATS Replacement) in 2018 XT7: (Seven-seat crossover that is reported to be on Omega. Other reports put say it will use the platform underpinning the redesign Buick Enclave/Chevrolet Traverse) in 2019 CT5: (Replacement for the CTS) in 2019 XT1 or XT2 (Subcompact crossover) in 2020 XT5 Redesign (Possibly going on Omega) in 2021 CT1 or CT2 (A3 and CLA fighter) in 2021 CT8: (Flagship using Omega) in 2021 All of these models are expected to use an evolutionary design theme from the Escala concept. It is still unknown whether or not the CT1/CT2 will use the Delta front-wheel drive platform or use Alpha.
      The brand is also planning investments totaling $800 million into their retail operations in the U.S.
