Trump's Tariff Threat Turned Out To Be A Farce

...the "deal" was made months ago...

The tariffs that Trump had threatened to impose on Mexico starting June 10th will not be going on to effect.  Trump tweeted out that Mexico had made concessions to deploy their newly formed Nation Guard to their own southern border and that it only took two days for Mexico to bend to Trump's demands.   This is false.

The truth, according to a report in the New York Times is that Mexico had already agreed to do that back in March 2019 during secret talks between the (at the time) Director of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and the Mexican Secretary of Interior Olga Sanchez. Further, Trump claimed a victory via his tariff efforts saying that he had reached an agreement that Mexico would hold more asylum-seekers on the Mexican side of the border while the U.S. processes their cases.  The timing of this is also false.  The agreement was already reached at the same meeting in March.   Where Trump failed was in getting Mexico to accept a "Safe Third Country" treaty that would have given the U.S. the ability to reject asylum seekers if they had not first sought asylum in Mexico.

In opposition to the tariffs was many Senators from Trump's own party, including the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who said, "There is not much support in my conference for tariffs, that's for sure". Many in the GOP were whispering that the Senate was going to pass a resolution disapproving of the tariffs, causing embarrassment for Trump and making him look weak.  Most likely that whispering got to Trump himself and so then he laid claim to the previously agreed "concessions" from Mexico in order to save face and drop the tariff while claiming victory.

Many business leaders too were calling for relief from the tariffs, the auto industry would have been hit especially hard with a significant number of components passing over the border multiple times.

Below is a list of vehicles that are currently assembled in Mexico for U.S. consumption:

Stop being a baby unless you want me to start changing words in your posts. This is just dumb. I do want to thank you for proving that you really aren’t capable of having an adult discussion about anything you don’t like. Just level 11 jackassery.

The Boeing 737 was a Boeing error. This is already been established. Boeing screwed up big time.

Regarding the B-52, yes they aren’t building anymore. Maybe they should because past attempts to replace with garbage like the B1 Bomber have been failures. The B-52 is a rare case of “if ain’t broke, don’t fix it” (or try to replace it). All that money wasted to replace could have been rerouted towards making more and making than even better.

Damn autocorrect. That should read “making THEM even better”.

I think it is a bit early to recycle the Abrams fleet while our opponents increasing substantially their armored forces.  Abrams proved that it is far from obsolete and we still might (and I think most definitely) will require it in the future.  It is much easier to maintain and upgrade than to build something from scratch, especially if you need something like a tank in a big hurry.

The point being in the links I posted, the Military has clearly stated they have more than enough tanks and no need to update the earlier Abram tanks in the High desert for the nearly half a billion dollars compared to using that money on other things they need like body armor for the soldiers, lite attack vehicles, etc.

This is not scrapping the whole Abrams fleet, just the older ones, aka 2000 first and second generations that would be reworked with new engines, electronics, etc. to get them up to the current version they are building and buying.

Recycle the older ones, spend the money on the newer tools that are used in todays Gorilla warfare.

Well I was feeling cute.  I thought it was funny, a nice twist to suit my objective at the time.  The original post is still intact and fully functional.  Surreal, you should be able to hit the "edit" button and fix any typos, I use it sometimes.

I’m sure it will be, at almost triple the initial cost estimate.

I know how government projects are done and there are a lot of waste, but to be fair, expanding boundaries of new technology, and making one plane working for all three branches is not an easy task, and expensive at that.

And if waste is our cri8teria...tons of waste in peoples personal lives and in the private sector as well.

People are free to waste as much of their OWN money as they want. But when you waste OTHER’S money, that’s theft in my book.

This was published a year ago, but so on point as it explains the REAL REASONS Tariffs Threaten Our Economy and what it will do to our $20.85 Trillion in Debt we need to be paying down on.

Companies are pleading with Trump to stop the Tariff War as the hits set in with higher prices and much more goods sitting on shelves and warehouses.

Interesting to read how across the pond they see our Tariff war with the world!

Interesting the story on the FART ACT by Trump to allow him to Abandon the WTO pack. :palm:

Had a Container ship come in over the weekend and they loaded up stuff, but nothing really was dropped off. This morning, it is amazing how empty the port is now and the trucks lined up to pick up containers is few compared to the backup they usually have. Clearly freight shipments are way down.

It was trolling and not even close to the topic of tariffs.

No... It was a trolling post about EVs that had nothing to do with the topic on hand.

I really like those two dfelt posts above, with a nice mix of personal attacks on the POTUS, in addition to a slant to suit his running, negative narrative on this administration.  Beautiful photography too.

dfelt... airplanes?  Have you read this thread?

    • @A Horse With No Name I can see you in this with AWD for your EV. Charges are on par with the Subaru, only difference is compact versus full size that Subaru just revealed at NY auto show. Course if you do not mind a certified used, one of the EV9's coming back off lease with low miles are a value deal to get and then your at 800V with 18min charges to 80%.
    • They canceled the PHEV back in the fall along with a bunch of other PHEV models at Stellantis. They were having too many issues. I want to say the Grand Cherokee PHEV and Wrangler PHEV also got axed.
    • This will sell well for the dealers as the only Chrysler product they have to sell. Great to see AWD as an option to compete against Toyota. Wish Kia had their SUV looking Minivan with AWD. @Drew Dowdell Any mention of a Hybrid version as I do not see anything on this.
    • Chrysler invented the minivan 43 years ago, and more than 16.6 million of them later, the Pacifica arrives at the 2026 New York International Auto Show with its most significant visual update in years. The 2027 Pacifica debuts a new front fascia that Chrysler says defines the design language for the brand going forward. A New Face for the Brand The exterior redesign applies to the Select, Limited, and Pinnacle trims. The new entry-level LX (the renamed Voyager) retains its familiar exterior and offers the lineup's lowest entry point, well-equipped with power-sliding doors and heated seats and steering wheel. On the upper three trims, the centerpiece of the redesign is an illuminated version of the Chrysler wing badge, serving as the anchor for a cross-car LED lighting signature. Vertical headlamps flank the badge, and the grille features what Chrysler calls "piano key" accents: repeating vertical LED elements that frame the lower fascia. Forward lighting relocates to the lower bumper, drawing attention to the illuminated grille above it. New projector headlamps provide a 17% improvement in maximum reach compared to the previous generation. On Limited and Pinnacle trims, the Pacifica performs a welcome animation when unlocked: the center lamp, badge, and signature lights illuminate in sequence, followed by the piano key accents at each corner. A matching animation marks the end of the drive. The rear receives a redesigned lightbar applique and updated wing badge to match the new front. New exterior colors for 2027 include Olive Green, with Steel Blue, Glass Gray, and Ember arriving as late-availability options. Eight wheel designs are available, including new 18- and 20-inch options for Limited and Pinnacle in Foreshadow and Machined finishes. Pinnacle Interior The Pinnacle debuts the most notable interior update with a new Blue Agave Nappa leather finish, a deeply saturated blue-gray that Chrysler positions as an alternative to the segment's typical blacks and tans. Seats feature an all-new Parquet perforation pattern, Sol Stopper copper accent stitching across the seats, instrument panel, doors, and armrests, and Tungsten Patina non-metallic piping on the seating surfaces. Copper Alloy accents replace chrome on the HVAC bezels and door elements. The Pinnacle's Ultra Console integrates into the instrument panel, offering dual-level storage with a large pass-through for handbags or tablets. All trims receive a new Chrysler wing badge in Satin Chrome finish on the steering-wheel airbag cover. A new adjustable-height power liftgate is standard across the lineup, letting drivers set a maximum opening height to avoid garage ceilings, carports, or parking decks. Stow 'n Go Still Stands Alone Twenty-two years after its debut on the 2005 model year Pacifica, the Stow 'n Go seating and storage system remains the Pacifica's most consequential differentiator, and still the only such system available in any minivan. Second- and third-row seats fold flat into the floor in seconds, creating a load surface with more than 140 cubic feet of cargo space. More than 5 million minivans have been sold with the system since its introduction. The combination that no competitor has matched also returns: available all-wheel drive paired with second- and third-row Stow 'n Go, offered on Select and Limited trims. The AWD system can send 100% of available torque to the rear wheels or to whichever wheels have the most traction, and fully disconnects the power-transfer unit and rear drive module when AWD isn't needed to reduce fuel consumption. Pinnacle models take a different layout: premium captain's chairs in the second row are removable rather than fold-flat (to accommodate the integrated Ultra Console), with Stow 'n Go retained for the third row. Powertrain and Capability The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 carries over, delivering 287 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque through a segment-exclusive nine-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. With the available Trailer Tow Group, maximum towing capacity reaches 3,600 pounds, best in class, with trailer-sway damping and a heavy-duty radiator included. Technology and Safety The former Uconnect Theater Group splits into two separate packages for 2027. The Family Tech Group covers everyday cabin technology: Uconnect 5 NAV with a 10.1-inch display, upgraded audio, eight-way power front passenger seat, additional power outlets and USB ports, and FamCAM, an interior camera system that provides a split-screen view of rear passengers with a zoom-to-seat function useful for monitoring rear-facing child seats. The Theater Group is now sold separately and focuses on rear-seat entertainment: Amazon Fire TV built-in, seatback screens, and a multi-channel remote. The decoupling lowers the cost of entry for families who want only one of the two bundles. The updated Safety Sphere Package, optional on Select and Limited and standard on Pinnacle, adds two new technologies: turn signal-activated blind-spot view, which displays a live camera feed on the center touchscreen when a turn signal is engaged, and ParkSense-based camera activation, which automatically triggers the appropriate camera view when sensors detect an object during low-speed maneuvering. 2027 Pacifica Pricing The 2027 Pacifica lineup starts at $41,495 for the front-wheel-drive LX. AWD is available on Select, Limited, and Pinnacle. Trim FWD AWD LX $41,495 N/A Select $44,545 $47,890 Limited $49,705 $53,050 Pinnacle $54,910 $58,255 All prices exclude tax, title, fees, and a $1,995 destination charge. Dealership arrivals are scheduled for summer 2026. View full article
    • So happy to see this, my only head shake is the 400V technology. At a time when they could like the Koreans leap frog Tesla big time on such a large EV, this one should have been 800V technology to handle true DC Fast Charging. Excited to see another 3 row adult size EV SUV hit the market.
