    Spying: 2019 Ram 1500 Shows Off Its Mega Cab

      It seems to look the same, but there are some changes in store

    The current Ram 1500 has been with us since 2009 and it is clear that it needs a major overhaul in light of the updated Ford F-150 and upcoming redesigns of GM's half-tons. We now have gotten our first look at the next-generation model - codenamed DT.

    Ram has gotten this mule fully covered up, but we can make out some key details. It looks like Ram is going evolutionary in terms of the 1500's design with the blunt shape and crosshair grille. The mule seen here is the Mega Cab variant with its larger rear doors.

    The spy shots given to Car and Driver also give us a good idea of what changes are taking place inside. It appears that Ram is getting the newest version of UConnect along with redesign controls for the audio and climate system. Towards the bottom of the center stack, you can make out a set of aeronautical-style switches and the rotary gear selector.

    In terms of engines, the next-generation 1500 will retain the 3.6L V6 and 5.7L HEMI V8. Rumor has it that the V6 could get direct-injection. The fate of the EcoDiesel appearing the next-gen pickup depends on the legal proceedings dealing with illegal software on the current EcoDiesel engine.

    Expect to see the debut of the next Ram 1500 sometime next year.

    Clearly see the family connection as that dash is a clear clone of the Jeep Wrangler dash. FCA clearly is not bothering to even try covering up the rebadge.

    Over all, except for hard core Ram fans, I doubt this will do anything to help gain sales. I also doubt we will see a diesel in the first year at least.

    IMHO, little more than the basic design themes will stay.  this is certainly going to be evolutionary, but look at the current and gen Silverado or current and last gen, and heck, the gen before on the F-series.  Same design themes all the way.  As for interiors, Canyon/Colorado/Silverado/Sierra/tahoe, etc, etc have pretty well identical interiors.

    • That is a valid option, but not everyone will want a Hybrid with all the additional maintenance of the auto. For some, if the area they are going to is not a designated remote area that has destination chargers like what Rivian is doing across the U.S. then the generator option is a valid way to go. Plus, the Ford Hybrid with the Power Option still puts out more CO2 than an EV and the occasional use of a small portable generator. Getting a Rivian with the MAX pack is already over 400 miles so as is common here, many who go rural rarely need a generator as they usually can go out and come back to a place that has a charger.
    • I think it is safe to assume that @A Horse With No Name is not looking to spend millions on an RV... That's a pretty silly comparison.  I thought a major point of going EV was not to have yet another ICE to maintain and carry gas around for..? If you're worried about going places that don't have a charging infrastructure, why not just save the thousands of dollars up front and just buy an ICE/hybrid and then just not worry about this situation? Get an F150 hybrid and you have a 36 gallon generator that will last you so much longer than a portable generator on top of being near silent, compared to any of the loud generators you listed. 
    • Considering how many people spend millions on RVs with generators and lug them all over to do outdoorsy things, how is a standalone generator any different? @ $1,899 and 239lbs this is the heaviest and most expensive but still takes up little space in a truck bed. I realize that change is hard for many and rethinking how you do something can be challenging to how folks have done things for the last hundred years plus. But change does happen. There are always alternative ways to do things if you look from new angles. Average price of a new ICE Pickup has crossed the $50,000 threshold, an RV trailer to pull with that pickup has hit the $10,000 to $300,000 range depending on feature functions and luxury. On Average the RV industry is stating many pay around $50,000. So, if you're wanting an Electric pickup, what is a couple thousand dollars for a quality generator and some gas in the bed to be used to do all sorts of things out camping in the remote areas including charging your pickup? Here is a perfect solution for many if your wanting the space and quiet operation of a quality pickup to go remote and just add in a generator.  
    • Buying a near-$1000 generator to do outdoorsy things for an EV owner is pretty damn silly, if you ask me. Also, lugging a 200lb generator not only takes up a very significant amount or space, a 5 gallon gas jug does, too.  There is no chance I would even consider an EV if this scenario was the way to get to/from my destination(s). This is possibly the worst solution to an issue that could very easily just be avoided at the dealership.   
    • One thing that you could do that is very efficient for those that want to go rural.  240V generator. Yes, this means you still burn some gas, but the efficient way of being able to run a very compact small generator and charge up your EV has immense benefits imho. Dual fuel means to me I could run it on Propane allowing me to BBQ out camping and still recharge my EV. Now if you want charging equal to a dedicated 80amp L2 charger at your home, then you need a portable generator that can produce 10,000W or 10kW. At that point then they do get a little pricey but are worth it.
