Volkswagen Golf R Dropped for 2020

...No official word as yet on a potential return...

As we reported in May, Volkswagen is making big cuts to the Golf lineup in the US.  Already announced for end of production in 2019 are the Golf Sportwagen and Golf Alltrack

For 2020, the current base Mk7 Golf returns and will be offered in just one trim, called the Value Edition that includes features like Keyless entry, Wifi, heated seats, and 16-Inch alloy wheels while the GTI will come in S and SE trims. Missing from the 2020 lineup is the Golf R.  Volkswagen has confirmed to Motor Authority that the Golf R has reached end of production for the current generation.

The Mk8 generation will likely see the base Golf removed from the US lineup and the GTI and Golf R will be the only entries.  We'll see the Mk8 generation Golf introduced in the fall of this year for European production in 2020, but the U.S. won't see the new version of the Golf/GTI at dealerships until the 2021 model year.

I think the problem with the Golf R is cost, those are over $40k and it is a VW Golf.   A GTI is $13k less and a lot more manageable monthly payment wise for the demographic that is buying Golfs.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE GOLF R TO COME BACK AS AN ELECTRIC THING.

Then it wouldn't be a golf R....just like driving an electric Mustang would be like having sex with your sister.

Or maybe not. Small performance cars are going the way of the Dodo bird.

One can buy a decent V8 mustang for that kind of coin.

    • Not me.  I have a decent kitty in my GM Card and I can't think of anything I'd buy from them.  I feel both ripped off and heartbroken. I had a little Nissan Versa sedan at the beginning of September.  A school friend put me up in NYC prior to sailing out so I bought all the meals and drove her around in a $50 a day Versa rented at La Guardia.  Bear Mtn. and Westchester County one day.  Long Island and Queens the next.  Zipped around NYC with ease, including parking it, it sipped fuel, it has good sight lines, and it's so damn logical - dash, trunk, etc.  I'd baby the CVT with frequent fluid changes and thought, 'I could do this.'

    • Here is a Pan Am 747 wearing its last livery. This is at Rio de Janeiro. I like that the last liveries for both Pan Am and TWA got rid of the stripe/ribbon along the windows.  It looked cleaner and more modern.
    • I could see NASCAR going that way...I can imagine the next generation of 'stock cars' being  Traverse, Explorer, and Highlander themed...or larger with Tahoe, Expedition and Sequoia...or smaller and sleeker-- Equinox, Mach-E, and Rav4..
