TOKYO - This afternoon, Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Japan announced that their North American operations will face a damaging threat in the coming months in the form of a massive class-action lawsuit brought forth by an unnamed California-based law firm. The lawsuit claims that Toyota neglected to make their new full-size pickup truck, the Tundra, and the popular mid-sized Camry sedan, among others, adhere to their own strict quality standards, resulting in faulty products that could bring harm to the consumer. The faulty tailgates on the Toyota Tundra are cited as one example.

The lawsuit calls for a $47.5 billion dollar settlement. Toyota officials say that the lawsuit could potentially bankrupt their North American operations.

This news, however, is not surprising, given that Toyota has previously encountered legal action concerning officials neglecting to make vehicles adhere to policy concerning quality. Vehicles produced at the NUMMI plant, a joint-venture with General Motors, that produces the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, and Pontiac Vibe, faced claims that they officials allowed the cars to come off of the assembly line with items such as faulty brakes or seatbelts. Also, it is interesting to note that some sources within GM are claiming that an official revaluation of the NUMMI partnership is possible due to Toyota's recent quality woes.
