Today marks the two-year anniversary that I do not have a motor vehicle to my name. There's less to hassle with. But the periodic renting is also annoying. When I see a nicely kept same model year LaCrosse going by, there might be a slight wince. I think it went to a good owner, as far as I could see, and hope that they get good use out of it. Actually, you can make an adventure out of riding transit. For example, I love that cheap 7-day MTA card that works across all five boroughs of NYC. Discovering large metro areas using public transit passes can be fun, as long as it does not lean too much on the "thrillseeker" side.3 points

Sub 60db really is pretty dang quiet. I guess when you spend a grand on a unit, it ought to be quiet, too.2 points

You have not heard new generators; most are on par at 45 db or so and top out at around 70db so no different than an ice auto. Only cheap old generators are really noisy with no muffler system.2 points

Yeah. Actually what makes the most sense, but wouldn't be as comfortable, would be a Ford Transit van....the smaller one. Could sleep in it in a pinch, could safely haul bikes and keep them out of site from thieves and vandals, could haul stuff for woodworking, and would be inconspicuous. I am thinking if I buy one, I am going to get magnetic signs in bright red that say something like "Stan's Drain Cleaning" or something like that, just so folks assume nothing valuable is inside. On the EV front, i really see Canadians cutting the 100 percent tariff on Chinese EV's, which will be a huge game changer. Wayyyy to complicated. When I go places, I want a tent, a sleeping bag, and a book. The less I take and the more simply I can live, the better. I actually wouldn't mind living somewhere with excellent public transit to greatly reduce my car use. I still eat out at restaurants, but am very choosy about everything. I prefer cooking at home any more. Turn on the Stereo, turn on the stove, and unwind.2 points

I have cats, and don't plan on adopting additional animals when these are gone. Like you, I want my freedom and tranquility, also solitude.1 point

The whole market is way over valued at the moment. I really would like to move beyond driving every day. The plus side of Capitalism is lots of cool stuff for killer prices. The downside is AI is going to take a ton of jobs. We will see what the future holds. A power washer and two cars is plenty. Everything else from mowers to leaf blowers is electric, but easily re charged. And my leaf blower is not going to leave me stranded with no way to re fuel it in rural West Virginia. I really wish they built a Hybrid Ranger OR that my wife was more comfortable driving larger vehicles. An F150 Hybrid would be killer.1 point

Exactly. It completely contradicts the whole "EVs are simpler" idea. And now you'd have another ICE to maintain, hahaha.1 point

One of my better friends and his wife wanted a Transit Connect for the same exact reasons you just listed. He hasn't gotten one yet, but the hold up was the prices of used ones. apparently they hold their value pretty well and you'd be buying a fleet one from somebody with a ton of miles. He said it just didn't really seem to make sense, at least yet. If I'm camping, give me the CO2 of the F150 hybrid over the noise of a generator. There's little worse than ruining the quiet of nature with a generator running for hours.1 point

Idiot47 has such a fragile ego, such a pathetic man! I agree that I can see Canada reducing tariffs on Chinese EVs to that which is equal to Korea. With Kia having a full size pickup truck, I can see Canada changing to a Korean, Japan and China auto market. I loved tent camping but about 7 years ago or when I hit 50 it was weird on how the body changes and sleeping in a tent even on a cushion is just not comfy anymore and I would wake up stiff and sore. Now airbnb when we go away to a destination or overnight a hotel room close to the rural off-road area we visit. A generator is not that much work if you're looking to just have certain things, it is far more versatile than having to drive out to fill up a gas tank on a traditional ICE as EVs with regen are far better off-road then ICE for efficient use and recapture of energy. Agree with at home cooking, far more relaxing than going out anymore.1 point

That is a valid option, but not everyone will want a Hybrid with all the additional maintenance of the auto. For some, if the area they are going to is not a designated remote area that has destination chargers like what Rivian is doing across the U.S. then the generator option is a valid way to go. Plus, the Ford Hybrid with the Power Option still puts out more CO2 than an EV and the occasional use of a small portable generator. Getting a Rivian with the MAX pack is already over 400 miles so as is common here, many who go rural rarely need a generator as they usually can go out and come back to a place that has a charger.1 point

I think it is safe to assume that @A Horse With No Name is not looking to spend millions on an RV... That's a pretty silly comparison. I thought a major point of going EV was not to have yet another ICE to maintain and carry gas around for..? If you're worried about going places that don't have a charging infrastructure, why not just save the thousands of dollars up front and just buy an ICE/hybrid and then just not worry about this situation? Get an F150 hybrid and you have a 36 gallon generator that will last you so much longer than a portable generator on top of being near silent, compared to any of the loud generators you listed.1 point

Considering how many people spend millions on RVs with generators and lug them all over to do outdoorsy things, how is a standalone generator any different? @ $1,899 and 239lbs this is the heaviest and most expensive but still takes up little space in a truck bed. Amazon.com : Gidrox 10000W Tri-Fuel Portable Inverter Generator, Gas, Propane & Natural Gas Powered, ATS Ready, 50A Ultra Outlet, Remote Start, CO Sensor, ECO Mode, Quiet Inverter for Home Backup & RV Use : Patio, Lawn & Garden @ $899 and 59lbs the smallest and least expensive option. Amazon.com : Generac 3,300-Watt Gas Powered Portable Inverter Generator - Lightweight and Compact - USB Ports for Device Charging - Produces Clean, Stable Power - Great for Home Backup, Camping, and RV Use : Patio, Lawn & Garden 5 gallon can of gas that can last a week of use in a generator with the cost of a generator above is still cheaper than many of the pickup trucks or RVs that people take to remote places. I realize that change is hard for many and rethinking how you do something can be challenging to how folks have done things for the last hundred years plus. But change does happen. There are always alternative ways to do things if you look from new angles. Average price of a new ICE Pickup has crossed the $50,000 threshold, an RV trailer to pull with that pickup has hit the $10,000 to $300,000 range depending on feature functions and luxury. On Average the RV industry is stating many pay around $50,000. So, if you're wanting an Electric pickup, what is a couple thousand dollars for a quality generator and some gas in the bed to be used to do all sorts of things out camping in the remote areas including charging your pickup? Here is a perfect solution for many if your wanting the space and quiet operation of a quality pickup to go remote and just add in a generator.1 point

Buying a near-$1000 generator to do outdoorsy things for an EV owner is pretty damn silly, if you ask me. Also, lugging a 200lb generator not only takes up a very significant amount or space, a 5 gallon gas jug does, too. There is no chance I would even consider an EV if this scenario was the way to get to/from my destination(s). This is possibly the worst solution to an issue that could very easily just be avoided at the dealership.1 point

One thing that you could do that is very efficient for those that want to go rural. 240V generator. Yes, this means you still burn some gas, but the efficient way of being able to run a very compact small generator and charge up your EV has immense benefits imho. Amazon.com : Gidrox 2500W Portable Inverter Generator, Super Quiet Gas Powered, EPA Compliant, RV Ready, CO Sensor, Parallel Capable, Clean Power for Camping or Party : Patio, Lawn & Garden Amazon.com : Generac 3,300-Watt Gas Powered Portable Inverter Generator - Lightweight and Compact - USB Ports for Device Charging - Produces Clean, Stable Power - Great for Home Backup, Camping, and RV Use : Patio, Lawn & Garden Here you could have the right 240V plug to allow charging of your EV which also means you could pretty much go anywhere. Dual fuel means to me I could run it on Propane allowing me to BBQ out camping and still recharge my EV. Now if you want charging equal to a dedicated 80amp L2 charger at your home, then you need a portable generator that can produce 10,000W or 10kW. At that point then they do get a little pricey but are worth it. Amazon.com : Generac 10,000 Peak Watt Portable Gas Generator - Electric Start - Home Backup or RV Ready - Heavy Duty Frame - Quiet, Long Runtime, Emergency Power - 49-State Compliant : Patio, Lawn & Garden Amazon.com : Gidrox 10000W Tri-Fuel Portable Inverter Generator, Gas, Propane & Natural Gas Powered, ATS Ready, 50A Ultra Outlet, Remote Start, CO Sensor, ECO Mode, Quiet Inverter for Home Backup & RV Use : Patio, Lawn & Garden I see this as a flexible solution if you especially go with an EV truck, then just add the generator with a propane tank or gas can into the bed. Please test drive one, you will be shocked as to the interior room. The head of the Mach-E program is a 6'2" tall burly man who made it a requirement of having 3 of himself in the back seat, space is good in both the Mach-E and F150 Lighting. I have no problems with the space. My issue is as you know the 400V system. A used Mach-E is a solid way to go to move into an EV at a much lower price to get used to the changes of EV life. I do not like cats for many reasons and some would turn a person's stomach due to what cats will do. Dogs on the other hand have a much larger loyalty and would rather starve to death by your dead side than eat you like a cat will. I grew up with dogs and while I have no desire to own one as they are forever babies that have to be fed, cleaned up after, etc. I like my freedom to get up and go any time without having to think about the dog.1 point

I truly hope GM reverses this mistake, but they seem hell bent on wanting to control your choices and options, as such, I have truly bought my last American Auto in my 2006 Escalade. Glad to hear you have such great credit as it seems to be a rarity in the south. Yes, higher power is more efficient, and the components last longer. This is why China has standardized for moving to one of two standards by 2030 for all EVs. 1000V or 1,500V It would seem 1000V would be in entry level EVs and 1,500V will be in mid range to luxury EVs. This also goes along with their mandatory charging standards where all EV charging will be one of two forms, 1000V or 1,500V charging. China approves mandatory standards for EV charging - EFS Consulting The benefit here is reduced mass due to more efficient electrical flow on the wiring harness and less heat leading to longer life, longer range and less waste.1 point

I understand the efficient train of thought and that can be done with software updates in regard to the motors / controllers to a certain point. What most people do not seem to understand is the benefits of 800V or 1000V that Lucid went with over 400V. Biggest reason, Improved Efficiency: Lower current flow reduces energy loss as heat, leading to a potential increase in overall vehicle range when using higher voltage. Reduced Heat in the electrical lines, battery pack, controller boards and motors that allow for a much longer life. Heat is the death of electrical components and when the power can flow smoother with less resistance, the life lasts longer. A 400V EV will not last as long as an 800V EV due to the heat that naturally is generated along the lines. Mercedes has found this out the hard way in just trying to be equal to Tesla and yet the number of electrical issues on their outgoing EVs due to heat problems is one reason Mercedes is moving to 800V along with faster charging as Europe does not have the ease of at home charging compared to America. Do not have to believe me, but look at this one story among many out there that talk about why higher voltage is better. Why More Voltage Makes for Better EVs by Road and Track WOW, R.I.P. for those that lost their lives due to this reckless truck driver. Dashcam video captures deadly freeway accident outside Los Angeles | Watch Interesting to see the credit scores by state. PHOQUE YEAH!!! But I am at it again... Phoque LA! Phoque the US! Go CANADA Go!!! Vlad Jr. born in Montreal. So...there IS a Canadian element there. I do have a problem with the Dodgers though. But unfortunately though...that "phoque the US" thing is sadly political...1 point
