    Beige’s New Ballad: Toyota Teases Avalon Ahead of New York

    There certainly aren’t many large cars in the world more dull and geriatric than Toyota’s Avalon. Drum up your thoughts about the current model, which went on sale all the way back in 2005, and you’re sure to think of retirement homes and Shoney’s rather than sporting arenas and Hooters.

    However, Toyota desperately wants to change all of that. The teaser image above was released today, and Toyota says it previews a “stunning US-designed sedan” the name of which hasn’t been officially confirmed. Not to worry, though, because you don’t need inside confirmation to work out this is probably the new Avalon. The teaser certainly fits some of the describing attributes dealers gave to the automotive press last year. It becomes even more evident that Toyota is probably teasing the new Avalon when you consider the Camry was just recently redesigned and a new Corolla certainly wouldn’t have design details like dual exit exhaust and an extremely sloping roofline.

    So do we think we’re seeing a “stunning” piece of design? Well, we’re going to wait until we can see this car in the flesh before we pass any official judgment. That said, it certainly appears to be more interesting than the current Avalon because, let’s face it, just about everything is.

    With Chevrolet debuting the new 2013 Impala at the New York Auto Show, it’s going to be interesting to see if buyers are drawn to the Avalon or it’s closest American rival.

    Have I really been to that many auto shows now? I remember seeing the "new" Avalon unveiled at a previous one.

    Time flies...been 7 years since the 3rd gen model came out..it had an MCE a couple years ago.

    It must be the MCE I'm thinking about. It was right around the time when Toyota was going through their major troubles with brick walls.

    I think at the time the press releases presented it as the 'all-new' Avalon, but it was just a new dash, nose, tail back in '10 for MY '11...

    This may be the reason GM moved up the 2014 Impala to NYC as my understanding from stuff Chris Doane had been saying that they were planning a big 2013 NAIAS where Chevy was going to show the new Corvette, Silverado, and Impala all at the show.

    Are you surprised it's been forever since you've seen one? It's hard to keep your doors open when your customer base is dying.

    That said, one still operates in Corbin, KY about 40 miles south of me. It's also worth mentioning the Shoney's in Richmond, KY was re-purposed into a Hooters a few years ago after it shut down.

    not so much that I haven't seen one, but the last time I saw one was during the Clinton Administration--pre impeachment, even--and I forgot they even existed.

    I always get Shoneys and Stuckey's mixed up. I really want a Stuckey's Pecan Log. Haven't had one in almost 2 decades.

    Shoney's is kind of a low rent IHOP or Denny's... I would think too ghetto for seniors...

    Mmmmm...Stuckeys pecan log rolls..those were a staple of family road trips when I was growing up...we would drive back and forth between our houses in Ohio and S. Florida 2-4 times a year, always stopping in the South at Stuckeys..

    I was going to throw in the obligitary Waffle House jab, but I thought Waffle House has suffered enough and I thought we were discussing places to get EDIBLE food.

    Here in seattle there is a chain called the Brown Bag and it was good when it first started and now just greasy bland large amount of food place that has become a greasy spoon. I think after getting a good name for food and meals you split with another person, they expanded faster and lost all sense of quality. Yet people seem to still go there just due to large quantity of food and it seems most are very overweight.

    +1 on the who we would rather discuss other places than this pathetic lack of style image.

    Poor Waffle House, my 94 year old grandma has found memories of the place, but they seem to be the dirtiest dive around.

      Right now, states and even cities can institute Ranked Choice voting, but it might only be for certain elections.  Zohran won the primary for NYC mayor partially because of RCV.   But that's only NYC. State level elections are the traditional sort, you pick between two parties or you throw away your vote on a 3rd party.  In the general election in NYC in the fall, voters are going to get to choose between 4 candidates, the current Mayor Adams (running as an independent this time), former governor Cuomo (was running for the democratic nomination, lost to Zohran, now running as an independent), Zorhan Mamdami who won the RCV democratic primary, and a no-name republican nutjob who will lose. My position is that all elections, whether for president or dog-catcher, need to be ranked choice and every race should have a box for "none of the above".  If I interpreted your question wrong and you don't understand how RCV works, Balletopedia has an explainer and video on ranked choice voting.

      We could do it with one simple change to the constitution, all other changes would flow from that. We need an amendment for ranked choice voting required in every election, even dog-catcher. Also the elimination of the primary elections. This will do several things.  1. It will stop extremist from both sides getting elected unless a true majority of the voters want it. The primary system is the primary cause of the extremism we've been seeing.  Only the lunatics can make it through their party's primaries and the sane, sober "boring" people don't get soundbites or traction. 2. It opens up the door for 3rd parties to make a real go of it. Ranked choice, even in just the general election, would likely have changed the outcome of 2016 and 2024.  Once the sane people are back in charge, we could look at things like breaking up monopolies/oligarchies and retiring the Electoral College.

      This is a last hurrah sort of thing.  The Durango was supposed to have gone out of production 5 years ago, but Stellantis has been in such turmoil they never build a replacement. They could make short work of it by doing a re-body of the Grand Cherokee L and making it more street-sport than off-road.

      This is Ranger sized. Purely a guess, but I'm thinking we'll see the debut of the truck by April.   The Model T moment is the reinvention of the production line. A 40% reduction in build time is huge. Why? People are switching to Equinox EVs en masse and it isn't even that great. A base 'Nox EV is $33.6k before incentives and it's the best selling non-Tesla. Prologue is higher and sells great too.  The "Ranchero" EV truck would be the only one in the segment at that price. The Scout and the Rivian are more than double. It's going to be a RAV-4 sized interior with a lockable bed and frunk, at a price lower than a RAV-4. There will be waiting lists for the first few years.
