we (USA) don't live in a democracy. it's a republic. the federal government has become more fascist since ~60s or 70s, and more socialist since the ~20's we were intended to be a free society, having free markets. when government ...directly and indirectly intervenes it's no longer a free market. monopolies can be bad, but look at how well the Zamboni company does, supposedly they have >85% share around the world. no one complains about that monopoly.

student/faculty rebates on microsoft stuff is damn good too. at least if you take a comp sci class the university here. i got xp 32bit and 64 bit version for ~$20 and vista business for ~$20 too, that's with shipping.
