GM News: Tripower Making A Comeback At GM
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in General Motors
I was also wondering this and as I looked around found the following info to be informative: https://www.jcmmachineandcoatings.com/thermal-management/ Thermal management, as it applies to an internal combustion engine, is the idea of controlling heat and friction in order to attain the maximum performance, fuel economy, and longevity through the use of ceramic coatings. This is done through the use of thermal barriers, thermal dispersants, and dry film lubricants. Each of these categories is explained in detail in their corresponding pages. To fully understand the idea of thermal management, you must have an understanding of the first two laws of thermodynamics, they are as follows: 1st law - The law of conservation of matter and energy - Matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed. For example when you burn a piece of paper, it is not gone; it has changed into ash and smoke. 2nd law - This law states that heat has direction, it moves from an area of a large amount of heat to an area of a low amount of heat in order to achieve thermal equilibrium. Just as a hot cup of coffee cools off, the high amount of heat in the coffee is released into the surrounding atmosphere. Another example is an ice cube melting; in this case the heat in the atmosphere is absorbed by the ice and cool water to become the same temperature as the surrounding air. Good Read as presented on this subject from Clemson University. Advanced Thermal Management for Internal Combustion Engines.pdf SAE has a document they sell on this exact subject for maximizing engine performance. https://www.sae.org/publications/technical-papers/content/2006-01-1232/ Advanced Thermal Management for Internal Combustion Engines - Valve Design, Component Testing and Block Redesign Advanced engine cooling systems can enhance the combustion environment, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce tailpipe emissions with less parasitic engine load. The introduction of computer controlled electro-mechanical valves, radiator fans, and coolant pumps require mathematic models and real time algorithms to implement intelligent thermal control strategies for prescribed engine temperature tracking. Smart butterfly valves can replace the traditional wax-based thermostat to control the coolant flow based on both engine temperature and operating conditions. The electric water pump and radiator fan replace the mechanically driven components to reduce unnecessary engine loads at high speeds and provide better cooling at low speeds. However, implementation of electro-mechanical actuators including the alternator and electrical storage devices introduces inefficiencies in mechanical to electrical energy conversion (and electrical to mechanical energy conversion), which may require increased fuel consumption over pure mechanical components. Empirical models can provide realistic component data used in simulation tools during the development process, and also define the basis for cooling system control algorithms. In this paper, a general framework to derive these empirical models is investigated for thermal management systems where the engine temperature must be accurately controlled in both steady state and transient operation. The evolution of automotive cooling systems also requires a paradigm shift in the engine block design. The design changes include isolated cylinder water jackets, temperature sensor arrays, and distributed smart valves to enable distinct cylinder-by-cylinder temperature maintenance for optimum combustion. This paper explores the introduction of a ‘coolant rail’ to accommodate specific cylinder temperature control defined by an on-demand cylinder dependent cooling strategy. WOW, ? SAE even has a paper on Modeling of an Electric Thermal Management system https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy15osti/63419.pdf Very interesting info on thermal management fluid loops for EV auto's batteries, cooling and heating systems.- 31 replies

Buick News: 2019 Buick Regal Avenir Is Putting On the Ritz
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Buick
Nice looking car, I like the interior of the car. The exterior, I am just not a fan of all things Bling'd out. Maybe if it was black chrome rather than pearl nickel. Nice but not sure if I would spend the money on this. I am more of a monochromatic buy. -

Agree, I have honestly thought if it was not for our second depression in 2007 when GM went bankrupt and Ford leveraged everything to the sky, Ford would have bought up GM's controlling stake in Subaru. Good match I think. All things Utility car married to all things Utility Truck / SUV.- 11 replies

Lincoln News: 2019 Lincoln MKZ Drops Black Label, Adds More Safety
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Lincoln
? Are they wanting to be a Luxury auto brand or not? Makes no sense to drop the Black label from a version of their auto's if they are trying to be an exclusive luxury auto company. Imagine the loyal Lincoln buyer. Buyer 1 - Hey I see you have a brand new 2019 MKZ, is that a Black label like my 2018? Buyer 2 - Um, no it is their top of the line 2019 MKZ Reserve II. What do you get with the black label? They did not have it available when I bought? Buyer 1 - My Black Label gives me "membership privileges" such as 4-year maintenance plan, and getting special access to events and restaurants. Buyer 2 - O'h that would be nice. How much did you pay for yours? Buyer 1 - I paid X amount for a Black label Reserve II, How about you. Buyer 2 - Ummmmm, I also paid X amount but I did not get any of those features. ............... Now that I wrote this up, I double checked pricing and I see that prices are $3,000 higher for the top end line without the black label features. WOW, did Lincoln screw the pooch on this one. https://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2018/Lincoln/MKZ/Black-Label-AWD/Pricing So a 2018 fully loaded Black Label MKZ AWD is $47,812 So a 2019 fully loaded Reserve II MKZ AWD is $51,740 This so does not make sense to me. ? -
Toyota News: Toyota Double Downs Investment On Hydrogen
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Toyota
Makes total sense with Toyota expanding their Hydrogen options that they would have a commercial van running on hydrogen even though it is a floating idea that Drew through out there. Toyota should pay Drew for the idea of a hydrogen commercial van. -

Toyota News: Toyota Double Downs Investment On Hydrogen
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Toyota
Got it, totally zoned on the business garage and that makes even more sense. I wonder what ever happened to Honda and their Home Garage fueling station that was all the rage in 2007. http://www.hydrogencarsnow.com/index.php/home-hydrogen-fueling-stations/ Now I will say I like this company's products: http://www.hydrogenhouseproject.org/index.html They have a Solar Hydrogen Fuel Cell electric lawn mower, Solar Hydrogen Fuel Cell Off-road EV, the cool part is the portable Joule box that can be used to keep your house fully in the power. Check it out. Sadly, while there was allot of concepts for home Hydrogen fueling, it has all died out due to EVs. I could only find the company above that seems to be building a unit that could be used for home fueling. Questionable if in my lifetime. All the rage in 2007 to 2012 and now dead compared to EV. So it will be interesting to see how Toyota gets this jump started as it is going to cost companies that go this route some big dollars to have hydrogen fueling equipment in places that their fleet can access and use it. -
Love the Truck, that is Bad Ass looking! Totally agree with you about how congress has removed the safeguards and now all bets are off on financial firms keeping themselves in check.

Toyota News: Toyota Double Downs Investment On Hydrogen
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Toyota
I get the renewable source for energy, having a small hydrogen generator in the garage is a challenge coming from a person who sold home CNG fueling equipment. RIght now your looking at an overnight fueling refill of a compressed hydrogen tank with high cost for the equipment up front. I am skeptical of a person wanting to pay 6 to 10K for a home fueling system without big rebates from the gov. -
Toyota News: Toyota Double Downs Investment On Hydrogen
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Toyota
I totally get the green side of emission on a Hydrogen auto. Yet I still see this as a big negative also since it takes way more energy to produce the Hydrogen fuel. So one must question the long term nature of Hydrogen auto's. -

Some of us here have stated that we are headed for a Bear market, if not this fall by spring, start of summer 2019 at the latest. Not going political, but this is affected and the first wave of recession at least with the Bear market is being seen. S&P is almost at the level of 2007 when our Great 2nd Depression started and lasted till 2012. We are now seeing the start of job losses and request for bailouts from the Gov due to the Tariff wars. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2018/07/30/after-trumps-farmer-bailout-manufacturers-ask-what-about-us/?utm_term=.b952e8477808 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/06/25/the-first-layoffs-from-trumps-tariffs-are-here/?utm_term=.99f29f83bc95 Companies in business since the early to mid 1800's are now being faced with possibly going out of business due to the inability to absorb the high tariff prices. Example is that Steel prices for local produced US steel have jumped 33%. US steel companies that were profitable jumped at increasing profit margins big time with the tariffs on steel / aluminum. 29,000 requests have been filed with the Commerce Department for exclusion from the steel / aluminum tariffs, the gov have only processed 1,317 so far. Half have been denials forcing companies to pay a 25% tariff on their asian sourced steel / aluminum. Result is that an 1839 Lawn care company that made their products here in America but did bring in some metal and other parts that are not made by any american company had to layoff 75 employees this summer due to a reduction in sales caused by the increase in prices to make and sell their products here. Asked for a bailout / being able to not have to pay the tariffs and denied. The company says if sales do not pick back up, they could be faced with closing the company by the end of the year. Currently the price tag alone to bail out companies hit by the Tariffs is pegged at $39 billion dollars. The white house says companies due to a strong economy can weather the storm till China gives into an equal trade agreement. Other companies in the stories above say they will be faced by Labor Day in making the hard decision to close their doors if they cannot find a way to stay competitive due to the increased costs. Another fall out that will hit hard is coming this back to school season as people will fins much higher prices on clothes to technology as we enter the fall season. To quote the story, Trump states Tariffs would help local US company Whirlpool in their appliance business, yet Whirlpool states that steel costs have risen far higher than anywhere else in the world here in the US causing disappointing earnings and validating that the Tariffs have canceled out any benefits the tariffs were meant to bring to the US. Farmers are demanding Trade, not aid in dropping the tariffs. Yet while the white house states that this will force other countries to negotiate with lower tariffs on US built products, so far it has had the opposite effect in increasing cost on US products making sales overseas all but dead. Enjoy reading the links above if you want to read even more on how this will affect us. A trickle down wave of stunted trade / sales is going to hit the US hard I believe in my own opinion on these stores. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/twin-wildfires-threatening-10000-california-homes/ar-BBLimcF?li=BBnb7Kz#image=AAz9KJh|16 Keeps getting worse, they now estimate 10,000 homes are in the line of being burned down between Napa Valley and Redding California. It could become the biggest fire in California history.
