Fourth-Quarter 2018: General Motors
oldshurst442 replied to William Maley's topic in Sales Figure Ticker
Ummmm..NO!!! Its a copy/pasted and enlarged by 25% Mazda CX3 with design elements from a Nissan Murano of a couple of generations ago which in itself is a taller, clumsier Mazda 3 hatchback... The Grand Cherokee is no styling beauty either... -

"available" and mild are the key words. Even if most people actually do choose that option, how many of them actually off road their MILD off roader GMC CUVs? In my book, either you are an offroading sports utility vehicle or you are a soccer mom, geezermobile appliance vehicle meant to get your old fart ass in and out of the vehicle more easily... -

Nope. Just a 5-6 year old kid that never wants to grow up (old?) On second thought, the General Lee with Daisy Duke shorts...? I wonder if my wife could fit in those? ? -

For me....it is the opposite. Obviously now, and for the last 2,3,4, 5 years now, sedans have gotten to be, not that interesting. That would be because CUVs have taken over... But...fir me at least, all these new CUV entries we have had in the last 5 years, not one interests me. Not one! I keep on going back to the only SUV that I ever loved. And that would be the original Jeep. CJ, YJ, TJ, JK, JL... I can tolerate the Ford Edge. Im really liking the Aviator. The Blazer looks to be alright, but I doubt that it excite me to the point where I could say yippee!!! The Jeep Grand Cherokee is also tolerable. -

You guys are sissies!!! We keep talking about about how sedans are going away, we discuss how vehicles are becoming appliances... Back in the 1980s, middle aged men drove these around with nie a complain. Burt Reynolds was 41???!!! Im dissapoint... -

He does go a bit further than that. He wants Corvette to be a brand. And he says that the Cadillac V Series cars would benefit more if Corvette took over those and sell them too. Id agree with him on that as well!!! Its not as if the checkered flags did not go on vehicles other than the Corvette... Intead of the V Series badge, a chekered flad emblem could adorn the cars and sold as Corvette tuned GM vehicles. From there, the Escalade could get done... And of course other vehicles from GM like the Blazer. Or even Tahoe. Different mods for different GM brands? Maybe? And from there, Corvette tuning could branch out to other performance makes. Hyundai's Genesis maybe? Hennessey does it with the Escalade. Hennessey does a Hellcat too I think along with the Exorcist Camaro. (I cant stand the man, he is a crook, but, for all intents and purposes of this conversation...) why not the Corvette racing and performnce team at GM? -
Yeah. You may be right. The Silverado does seem to have a nice side profile, though. I like that swoosh on it. Too bad the front end is all roided up to hell... If you gonna do a swoosh, you might as well do a swoosh (or several of them)...that LeSabre concept wears them loud and proud!
-
Maybe that swoosh dates back to these guys? (the 1959 is more of a straight line) (the 1960 is more of a crease going from the top fender to the back making itself into the wing) (and the 1961 is more like a swoosh, that leads up to the back. I think I like the 1961 representation the best of all of them!)

Was that a rendering of an Oldsmobile Toronado to look like a Cadillac? Or, was the Eldorado supposed to look like that, but Oldsmobile said "Hey! That should be the Toronado!!!" (And then, something horrible went wrong...)
-
Yes. Yes. Monroney=window sticker Mulroney=Prime Minister that could be bought...he was a lawyer after all.
-
I forgot about...well, all that I did not mention. And I was too lazy to Google. And...not to make excuses for myself, but I had a looooong day at work making my brain turn to mush as soon as I got home. But thanx for the info. ? But let us be honest here, some of those vehicles mentioned are piss poor attempts. (MB250e) And some of those lack ANY cool factor that they try too hard to be cool which, as it turned out, did not impress the masses much. (Kia Soul EV) The Kia Soul actually tried too hard to be a hip car even as a gasoline powered vehicle. I like it personally. But it is weird looking. And then some of them are quite good attempts, but waaaay too much coin to spend on them as their gasoline (or diesel) powered siblings are cheaper in price, get good mileage anyway as fossil fuel burners. (VW e-Golf) I wonder how the Jag iPace compares to the Tesla Model X. Forget it. I do not care. I hate the whole crossover/SUV scene regardless of what powers them... But I know one thing, none of those electric machines even comes close to the cool factor the Teslas have. Nor do the electric doodads. And THAT is how Tesla is still Tesla around the world... PS: Does anybody else hate the acronym "BEVs"? Not very appealing. I do not mind CUV or SUV, but BEVs... YUCK!!!

Well, no other traditional automaker has actually done a full, pure, 100% battery only electric car to be honest. There is GM, BMW, Nissan. Mercedes too. The Toyota Prius family...all those are hybrids right? So Toyota is not one of the companies to get on the 100% full EV bandwagon, right? The Mercedes SLS Electric was one expensive motherfu . I do not know how many were produced and sold, but Im willing to bet it wasnt that many. And I think these were limited editions anyway, so moot point about sales... Porsche and Mercedes Benz are gonna play in the Tesla Model S territory. Porsche and Mercedes Benz better have their A++++ game in the electronic gadgets inside the car as Tesla is second to none there. Tesla's screen that does everything, the download-ability that updates the systems...are all like Microsoft, Apple, Android smooth. THAT is the thing, we all say that Tesla is like Apple...well, they are because Tesla's electronic gadgets act and react EXACTLY how PCs, laptops, tablets and smart phones behave. Maybe even better...and THAT is what the consumer of Tesla cars EXPECTS of their cars nowadays. We've all been spoiled by our smart phones. And then tablets. And THAT is how we want our electronic doodads to be like. And Tesla does that better than anybody! Talk all you want about leather seating, soft touch dashboards or center consoles that cools or heats our drinks...what the modern buyer of cars, especially EVs want, is that their car's connectivity to the internet via that touch screen, be even better than what they are used to with their Samsung's Galaxy and iPhone and tablets... If Mercedes and Porsche want to steal consumers from Tesla, THAT is where the battleground will be fought at... Oh...did I forget to mention the charging network? Oh...and Tesla's motor is a gem too... We will see if Porsche will be able to duplicate Ludicrous... Tesla has NOTHING to lose. If Porsche beats it...hey its Porsche. Its a speed company. And a new speed war has began. And then we wait and see what Tesla does next... If Porsche does not...Porsche hangs their head in shame and only benefits Tesla even more...

GM News: Mark Reuss Takes On Role of President of GM

You and me both! I especially HATE IT!!! ? when people dress up their dogs.... I understand FULLY!!! @dfelt mentioned his drills... I too, have my favorite tools. A Black and Decker Fire Storm cordless drill, that I absolutely refuse to give up. I love it!!! But Im also on my 3rd Ni-Ca battery on it that I bought for it. 50 bucks. I could buy a brand new Lithion battery powered Ryobi or Makita or whatever...but that Black and Decker, its been with me since 1994. We've been through a lot. I bought it for my dad.XMAS gift. He used it a lot. I used it a lot. As long as I could always buy a Ni-Ca battery for it, I will never let it go. Plus...with my cars that Ive owned. There is ALWAYS a sad moment when I replace them with something new. I aint happy for a new car. Im saddened that Im departing with the old one. I actually cried when I traded in my Olds Alero for the Impala I bought. I just confessed to crying over my Olds Alero when I gave it up for another car. I think that qualifies. But, let us be real here. Anthropomorphism is what is happening here. Inanimate objects do not have personalities. We as humans, assign personalities to them. But...animals actually DO have personalities for real...- 57 replies

That my friend, is the age old question, isnt it? “Ignorance, the root and stem of every evil.” ― Plato “I'm trying to think, don't confuse me with facts.” ― Plato “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” ― Socrates “I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think” ― Socrates “Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.” ― Socrates “Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.” ― Socrates “To find yourself, think for yourself.” ― Socrates Ignorance is the night of the mind, but a night without moon or star. — Confucius, 551-479 BC, Chinese teacher & philosopher The only thing that is more expensive than education is ignorance. — Benjamin Franklin, 1706-1790, American politician & writer Books and ideas are the most effective weapons against intolerance and ignorance. — Lyndon Johnson, 1908-1973, American President [1963-1969] As you see, from the dawn of time, man has struggled with this... But to willfully choose to ignore and to stay ignorant of what is what... Not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance is the death of knowledge. — Alfred North Whitehead, 1861-1947, British philosopher & mathematician With life experiences and input of all kinds, good, bad, accurate or false... Sixty years ago I knew everything. Now I know nothing. Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance. — Will Durant, 1885-1981, American historian & philosopher That is the beauty of human existence. We have the ability to learn...

remain ignorant is a million, scratch that, a zillion times worse. Bad info is still info, that if one uses logic, and the smarts they gained by getting bad and good information with life experiences and input from all kinds of input sources, one could still form a viable opinion and solution...
-
That is a common theme when discussing anything really. Not just politics. Sports...America's Team versus the rest of the NFL... Hey...we see this in automotive forums when discussing mundane shyte like cars, electric drive versus dino fuel, or Japanese cars versus American, or TTV6 versus NA V8, or wrong wheel drive versus RWD, or AWD all seasons tires versus winter tires and RWD for winter... But that is childish dont you think? Like I said earlier, neutrality seems to be lacking because we are all selfish little asshats... Maybe we should try to improve on our selfish little asshat selves then.

December 2018: Ford Motor Company
oldshurst442 replied to William Maley's topic in Sales Figure Ticker
Which of course a twin turbo 6 cylinder will also pull with the same force. If not more when the turbos kick in. But a naturally aspirated engine, especially a V8 naturally aspirated engine still has a leg up on a forced induction V6. Image. I think a V8 in a beast of a car like an Escalade or Navigatot or Cullinan or Bentayga or a Mercedes GLwhatever or a Land Rover still resonates with folk that wanna show their wealth. -
+1 on this! Read and listen to everything. There is an element of truth to all angles and leanings. Even on the extreme leanings. Those are exaggerated truths, but truths non the less. And from there, one could form one's opinion.

True. And the V8 the Escalade already has is powerful, and its very quiet. Actually, the Corvette ZR1 in Tour mode is also very powerful and quiet. But both need V8s to keep up a certain image. -

But, I doubt those folk be driving loud, halo cars like an Escalade, or Challenger, let alone a Ferrari 512 to begin with... These folk be driving soulless BMW AWD 3 Series or AWD Audi A4s. Or worse, the CUVs of those brands. Or quiet ride Lexus and Buicks. (Not so sure about Buick because those types wont be caught dead in one, because GM). Those folk wont understand why a car like the Miata, a 4 banger, even exists let alone wanting a V8 under its hood... Yes, there are many of those kinds of folk, but for those few folk that want to express themselves and LOVE the automobile for what it TRULY represents, a status symbol, but a status symbol of what it can actually do on the road and that they themselves take pride in commandeering, little trivial stuff like a V8 in a land yatch halo car is still a must. And in the league of a Navigator and Escalade, that may very well be the case. In the pick-up truck world, maybe Ford did a truly exceptional thing in convincing the good 'ole boys to ditch the V8 in their dick measuring trucks, it seems like the message has not been passed on to the Lincoln Navigator... -
Thank you @ccap41 for answering those questions. Now, if others would answer them, data could be collected and we could all have decent political discussions without the corrosive attacks and the blind eye and deaf ear responses. As long as we are ready to learn stuff from one another... Political discussions are not inherently bad and toxic, its how one tries to communicate... Its NOT about converting. Its about listening. Its about learning about the issues and tackling them with solutions. But here is the biggie...personal belief systems NEED to stay at home...everyone has a right to believe and live their OWN life without IMPOSING their belief system unto others. NEUTRALITY seems to be lacking in US society... And yes, all that what I said requires COMPROMISE... In 2018-2019, it seems we all behave like whiny, crying little brats... When I was a whiny, crying little brat, my mom would give me cross handed smacks across my face to shut me up...(and it worked)...
