Scheduled Downtime May 4th 9p - ?
z28luvr01 replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in Site News and Feedback
Finally resolved all the glitches on the new server and I'm ready to finish the move. I'll turn things off here at 9PM. -
I gather you're not a fan of the CTS coupe. It's probably the closest you'll get that isn't a Camaro. I would not write off the Ute yet.
-
.. I still wouldn't be caught dead with the keys to one in my pocket. Seriously, I give them a lot of credit for building a car that apparently stacks up well to the Camaro. But I'll never understand the Japanese/Korean design philosophy that states that equates "different" to "ugly". I don't see the Genesis as anything more than a mishmash of miscellaneous stillborn designs from previous Hyundai efforts. None of the body lines make any sense to me. The whole thing just comes off...awkward, and I'll gladly take the supposed performance penalty that comes with the Camaro and have a car that's not an eyesore.

Here's what it could look like, for reference: I think it would look better if he taped off the portion of the housing that surrounds the reflectors and left it chrome, like this guy: If you were to try it, vipes, I'd go with a black tint to darken the chrome until it's roughly the same shade as the plastic in the grille, and leave the edge bright chrome. That could be pure hotness.
-
The SS headlight uses a slightly darker chrome finish, so you could go that route. Or, if you're creative, patient, and conscientous, you could save himself a couple if hundred, take the lights apart, and paint them yourself. It's only been done by about 85% of the population over at cobaltss.net.

I'm in full agreement with you. Buick needs all those things, or it'll get ripped to shreds. I guess my point is, it doesn't need to be advertised and shouldn't be Buick's marketing focus. Performance should be a "throw in" for buying a stylish, vault-like, luxurious, refined Buick. Get my drift?
-
You're a lucky man. Tell her I said hi.
-
OK, I promise not to bite your head off if you promise not to bite mine off. You did bring up the GN/GNX. Maybe Buick can grow a "performance" arm in the future, but not now. Buick's best chance at survival is staying its current course.
-
There is nothing wrong with Buick actually having performance. At this time, however, it doesn't make sense for Buick's mission to be performance. Rather, it should be on style, precision, luxury, refinement, etc. which is working well in China right now and should be successful in the US if GM stays the course. The "affordable performance" theme will have to go to Chevy - there's no other place for it.

That square cutout is the joint for the collapsible mirror head. Call me biased, but it wasn't a huge consideration when I was shopping for cars back in '05. Nice job, BV. I think you'll find that you can do a lot on the Cobalt by doing a little.
-
They might as well offer it for sale. They're going to get no return on it by shutting it down. Considering that Opel, Saab, Saturn, and Hummer are on the block but not sold, you'd think GM's ears would perk up when someone offers to take an unwanted brand off their hands.
-
Rangers are out of it, so I'm happy now.

I know they went with the MPI 2.8 in the mid 80s - a friend of my father's had a black '86 6000 (a non-STE at that) that was fuel injected. from wikipedia I do agree there's plenty of blame to go around. It seems like there's no place in GM for a brand whose claim to fame is bucking the system. Pontiac has had to scratch, crawl, beg, borrow, and steal for much of its existence and still managed to produce some memorable cars under these circumstances. Now, the rebel has been excised, and what's left is a group of brands that'll follow their marching orders, never straying from the party line. Get ready for the one-size-fits-all GM. It may actually be successful someday, but it wont be the same.

Pontiac not the end of Holden exports to the US
z28luvr01 replied to douglask's topic in Heritage Marques
I agree with you. I don't like the underlying tone of the article that suggests that Pontiac "got in the way" of things. Pontiac was a more natural fit for the GTO since the styling would have been met with 1000x the disdain if it came over as, say, a Camaro. The G8 was a natual replacement for the GTO, and the G8 ST only made sense at Pontiac because of the G8. I fail to see how the Holdens would have done any better as Chevies, Buicks, or GMCs. Elizabeth can't crank enough of them out. I would venture to guess that if the Commodore were to come here as a Chevy, it could do so as an Impala, but it may have to wait a couple of years. I believe the Oshawa owns the right to make Impalas. The W-bod is supposed to be taken behind the old barn and shot around '13, around the same time the next-gen Commodore has been said to be ready. If this were to come to pass, GM would have the lines ready at Oshawa and the capacity necessary to sell them in high volume. If GM were to build a Buick version as well, it could come from Elizabeth since it'll be a lower volume product and able to fetch a higher price point than a Chevy. If Holden's looking for something to send to the US immediately after the G8 dies, I would send the Chinese PA as is, and the Ute as an El Camino, stat. They're already ready, all they need to do is get on a different boat. PA = instant Lucerne replacement. The Ute has (and always did) have its best shot selling here as an El Camino. Having it made at Elizabeth constricts the volume enough that will afford GM the opportunity to be cautious in reintroducing America to the car based pickup. If it takes off, great - when the next gen is ready, its production can move to Oshawa. -

Bull$h!. Only the first six words of that sentence are correct. You saved pennies by killing a brand that consisted of essentially free cars. Alienating American customers and taking out GM-H in the process is a pretty piss poor strategy. But what the hell do I know? I hope all the guys who $h! in every Pontiac thread are enjoying themselves. You think this is what GM needs to be successful? You're dead ass wrong. -
Yes, the extra length is just so tacked on. Before he found a set of bumper filler pieces for the 1973 MC, he was toying with the idea of cutting the bumper mounts and pulling the bumpers close to the body.

One thing's for sure, tomorrow's announcement is going to have several people on this site cheering. I hope I'm one of them.

Just for the record: The current Corolla is a hideous pile The previous Corolla is a hideous pile The Corolla before that is a hideous pile And I make no apologies for my statements.

Guys, again, please keep the politics out of this. Several GM officials have said that the administration is asking for GM to give up NOTHING in terms of brands. This news story is GM's own doing. -

A no brainer, IMO. Though I think the fender vents could stand modification/deletion. -

Time for a ride in the wayback machine: 1964 Tempest 1964 GTO Call it whatever you want, the last GTO perfectly fits the formula created by the original - hot engine in a rather nondescript body. Stop the hate. -
I've read that Eibach springs will destroy the stock shocks/struts (especially on the base models) in a matter of months. So you might as well price out an aftermarket shock/strut upgrade to go along with the Eibachs. Me, I might just do the FE5 shocks/struts all around. I wouldn't mind a tad more stiffness, and they'e actualy cheaper than the FE1 stuff you and I are currently running. Not sure how much drop Ill get from not changing the springs,

I'll back PCS up too. I can provide proof if needed. I suggest we all wait 'till Monday to see how things shake out.

My wheelwell gap is less than half that. Either your grandma installed a lift kit, or that car is up in the air.
