    I guess the Bugatti Royale must be a really s#$& car because they only sold half dozen. Good thing the much nicer Corolla has sold 40 Million. Could we please stop having school yard fights over sales numbers? I love the Escalade, but will every day of the week take an F type over it. Would love to actual discuss merits of actual vehicles. All luxury cars are a horrible investment. Given the cash to buy an S class, give me a GTI and I will happily invest the hundred grand I save.

    The real banality of life in the Midwest is best expressed through sarcasm, but I have recently put sand in the private parts of another member here expressing the true nature of how these things work...so I will return later to post pictures of kittens instead.

    Most of them wills till be crushed, actually...as most will be bought back and VW is not repairing most of the early cars.

    In an ideal world, I would have a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the fleet. two adult children living at home, a son in College, a daughter about to be in College....yeah....there is a reason i can't afford one. Color me jealous!

    I understand...kind of the opposite of the electric you like, which has a lot of torque from a low RPM.

    Around here middle Income would be Audi...or more likely Acura as this is central Ohio and Acura country. Went somewhere with my son, in his silver Acura TL...looked around at the stop light and there were six other Acuras there. Not a fan of the accord or Civic, but I do like the TLX, especially with SH-AWD, Import SUV's and Ford sell huge around here...you cannot swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting a dozen Escapes, Explorers and Edges. Like I said about the drinking water in Michigan...obviously true for lead in the pipes in Ohio as well. Around here....Asian families drive Asian cars. One of my Asian friends looked like someone had kicked him in the stomach when he saw me pull up in a German car.

    Agreed! I didn't want to lower my Standards for a Focus or a Sonata...different strokes for different folks.

    The problem is that many people are the protagonist in their own little self centered mini drama, and are unaware of and unable to interact with the world around them. ...which is why we need other options...the same thing all of the time is boring.

    Just the opposite here, lots of vw products in middle class driveways. local dealer cannot keep atlas Suv in stock...and they are selling mostly fully loaded models, not the cheapies.

    Exactly. They appeal to a certain urban demographic....you see lots of them in major cities, virtually none in rural areas.

    This is getting towards politics, not that I mind....but I think we may need to re open politics because one cannot talk about cars without talking about the world they live in from a political standpoint. I would almost prefer a nationalized oil industry for various reasons. 1973 and OPEC was more about the Arab/Israeli conflict and Arab anger at America for helping Israel-again, highly political. The government IMHO is better at some things (infrastructure, health care, national defense, regulation for pollution) and the private sector is better at some things (basically all of the innovation we enjoy every day-everything from Micro Brews and Taco trucks to Aircraft as we were discussing before. I don't know that its wise to look at it as an either or thing either....the airline industry is heavily regulated but the safety and efficiency of the airline industry is astonishing. In fact, 4 major air frame types have NEVER had a fatal accident despite billions of passenger seat miles flown-Boeing 717, Boeing 787, Airbus 340, Airbus 380. THAT is government and industry working together. Same thing with the national electrical code-I was an electrician for much of my adult career...insurance companies and home builders, as well as owners of commercial property have a vested interest in safe buildings that don't burn down or hurt people. ...and this is where the USA disappointments me the most, actually. we used to lead the world in moving ahead with things like this...seems we are now content to let the rest of the world lead.

    VW screwed the pooch on that one....the MK 4 models (of the 2000 era) turned a lot of people off to VW forever.

    Sales wise they are close...Airbus was way behind on the introduction of the A350, the competitor to the wildly popular 777. Even countries like Pakistan that pretty much hate the USA buy the777 because it is so wildly good at what it does. In terms of A380 vs 787, Boeing will eventually make money on the 787, Airbus is pretty much out of orders and out of luck on the A380. 747 was a colossal waste of money as few airlines outside of Lufthansa bought it as a passenger plane, and they sell something like half a dozen or so freighter versions a year. Will be interesting to see what the Chinese do, as they are wanting to compete with the A320 and the 737, Hard to under estimate the Chinese, as they ahve been around for a few thousand years and they are a highly determined society with something to prove.

    My point is merely that we seem incapable of utilizing common sense when it comes to automotive or energy policy. The way the VW scandal was handled would be IMHO further proof of this.

    I would say VW and Honda buyers are each kind of a unique demographic rather than a particular age group.

    Absolutely...and IIRC Airbus is starting to pull ahead of Boeing. Actually at this point we are going to follow a the rest of the world will lead for the foreseeable future. Because people don't act rationally. No such thing as a perfect law. I like the idea of electric cars from a personal liberty standpoint.

    Not trying to be funny but serious here. But this comment is hitting me the wrong way and it is not your fault. Father of one of my 16 year old Daughters friends is a flat Earth advocate and I have dealt with a lot of astonishing stupidity the last couple of weeks. The real issue with our country is that we cannot think about things like adults or act like adults. Our Politics and the whole common sense point you just made are signs and symptoms of this. They just have a problem building them profitably.

    It is a 40 year cycle actually...full size two door cars started going away in the late 70's, early 80's....it has been downhill ever since. It also goes back to the millennial thing...millennials are very social...and want 4 doors to haul freinds to basketball games and the like...

    Pretty much true....my kids friends regard a car as an expensive environmental disaster... When sex is something you do in a darkened room with the volume turned down..and you are still living at home so mom can wash the sheets afterwards....why would you want a car to take a girl out? I gave them seed money for their dreams, and we are going to see if the credit app fly's.

    Hopefully they have the sense to get out of the way of that speeding muscle car....4000 pounds and 450 Horsepower would hurt... Parakeets also told me if you get a Chryco muscle car they want a Superbird.

    Agreed, I think they will let it wither and rot on the vine like they did the last one....which is one reason we didn't even test drive this when we replaced the TDI Jetta. ...and yes, GTI is still on my short list...

    Exactly! ...and people of all ages that love cars and want coupes really don't want to drop 40 grand on a six cylinder wanna be that really in substance dates back to 2003 in the form of the 370Z!
