I just can't quite stomach the '78-'80 Montes, they try too hard (and fail) to be '77s. They caught their design stride with the '81 and up cars.

It doesn't matter. The tagline is defensible, witty, and memorable. Exactly what a tagline should be.

"By definition" is correct. And the ad did its job - the only metric useful in judging such things.
