I really like the XJ, but due to it's interior "coziness" it feels like it competes more with a 6-series sedan or CLS. It seems a lesser league than the 7 and S and even CT6 based on that.

Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Industry News
Hey, that worked for Saturn for 15 years. I'm sure @balthazar will have something to add, but Sears has already sold it's own brand of cars called the Allstate....they were rebadged Henry Js- 31 replies

Industry News: Dyson Plans An Electric Vehicle

Next up: Hoover and Kirby. I'd actually buy a Kirby built car, I have 2 of their vacuums, both older than me, and will likely out last me.- 31 replies

I think the most significant part of this news story is that there will be a next generation XJ.

Quick Spin: My Test of the Chevy Bolt
Drew Dowdell replied to Cmicasa the Great's topic in Chevrolet
My point was that gas stations we're running out of gas before the storm even hit. I arrived I Florida 5 days before the storm hit and large numbers of gas stations had closed. My parents business never even lost power though the house was without for a week. -

It's not sluggish once you get it rolling. It's the turbo lag from a dead stop that's the issue. Highlander Hybrid. -

This. Yes, if you're going to put the extreme example of 15 degree weather with the heat and radio blasting, there will be some reduction in range... but in normal circumstances with just a bit of traffic, no. And I just went through the scenario where I had a vehicle with 275 mile range, but with Florida gas stations out of gas. There was range anxiety as the hurricane approached. Charging stations don't run out of charge just because a fuel truck didn't pull up and too many people visited the station that day. -
Industry News: California Mulls Ban On Combustion Engines
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Industry News
There is going to need to be massive investment in charging infrastructure. Even if chargers are common enough for today's level of EV use, they aren't nearly plentiful enough for the entire state of CA to go EV. I've started to contemplate having the outlet installed in my garage in the next few years. When I get back into writing reviews in a few months time, I want to be able to take in plug-in vehicles.- 80 replies

Yeah, they don't need to chase down market... they're still the new guy on the block. -

And you'll have a whole bunch of chargers along the way. How many different ways can I say that traffic does not matter to an EV?? You burn less battery per mile in traffic in an EV instead of more gasoline per mile in a conventional car. Traffic. Does. Not. Matter. It has NO significant effect on range. -

If you're just sitting there, you're not using juice.... there is virtually no effect on range. It's the same as if you shut your gas car off. You can make it from your house to St. Louis and then on to Indianapolis on a single charge, and there are at least 4 chargers in between, not counting the many dozen in each of the metro centers. "Filling up" with an EV requires a different mindset. With gas cars, we usually just fill it up every time we stop. With EVs, you only ever fill up to the amount you need to get to your next planned charge plus a little wiggle room. If you think you're going to be driving through a major snowstorm, fill up accordingly. In my case, I can only go about 2 - 2.5 hours before *I* have to stop for a break regardless of my fuel situation, in an EV, I would charge up at those spots... So, if you are regularly jaunting across the country, pissing in water bottles, and never ever stopping, then no, an EV will not be for you. But if you're a more realistic driver like 98.999% of drivers out there, the 250 mile range of an EV will be fine, even for road trips. You can start at your zip code and reach any charger on this map with 50 miles to spare. -

You can do the same with a EV.... if you're not moving, you're not using juice. -

It means the excuse of traffic doesn't really enter into range... if you're just creeping along the highway at 25mph instead of 75mph, you'll be using less electricity anyway. -
Volvo News: 2018 Volvo XC40 Shows How Sweden Does Small
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Volvo
The GL(S) isn't a bad idea, but they cost more used than a loaded Durango Citadel does new. I'm not going to be towing with it, I just want a motorcycle platform to put on the back... kinda like a bike rack but for a motorcycle. For that, the vehicle needs to have a high tongue weight rating even though the weight being "towed" is only around 500lbs. So, while the torque of the GL Bluetech would be nice, it really isn't necessary. Plus, when I had one for a week courtesy of Benz, I felt the turbo lag on them bordered on dangerous. It was probably the worst I've ever experienced. You absolutely can't dart out in traffic... I had more than one aborted maneuver because the engine didn't react in the expected time after putting my foot to the floor. @Cubical-aka-Moltar - Yes, I would actually prefer the Grand Cherokee over the Durango by a large margin... we are looking for a 3-row though. Edit: Updated with a picture to show what I'm trying to do. The bike I'm looking at is very close to the limit of these racks, so I need the highest tongue weight rating possible... but overall engine torque doesn't really matter, even my CR-V could tow this fine if the hitch was rated that high. -

You realize that you don't really use electricity when you're not moving in an electric... it's not like you drain the battery when you're just sitting there. -

Quick Spin: My Test of the Chevy Bolt
Drew Dowdell replied to Cmicasa the Great's topic in Chevrolet
The Bolt's interior is intentionally lightweight in order to preserve range. It's just like when GM did the ATS where every ounce counted. Is it a $40k interior? no... it's a $40k drive-train. It makes the next generation of drive-train accessible to a new crop of buyers. OCN, you're not stuck putzing around close to home. You can make it all the way to my house on a single charge, and 30 minutes on a DC fast charger will get you another 90 miles of range in a pinch. -

Edit: That said, the Encore has been a find vehicle for its purpose. It is a great car to zip around the city with and yet is still quite comfortable on the open road when it's just the two of us, four of us on a trip is where it becomes a problem. My only complaint is power, it could use a bit more. -
Volvo News: 2018 Volvo XC40 Shows How Sweden Does Small
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Volvo
Our needs have changed since we bought the Encore, and we're heading in the total opposite direction as far as size. At the moment the Durango or Explorer are at the top of the list. The XC90 3-row if my raise comes through. More and more we're having to haul elderly parents and nieces and nephews (Quantity 7) along with us on trips. I'd like a Tahoe, but he said that's too big for him to drive as a daily. I'm leaning heavily towards the Durango because it has a tongue rating of 650lbs, which means I could put a motorcycle carrier on the back without having to get a trailer. The Explorer is only 500lbs. -
He's making a case for name brand value is all. Telsa sells on it's name, Chevy, except for Corvette and Tahoe/Suburban, can't do that. I've never been all that interested in the looks of Tesla, but I like the technology. When I do go to a plug in of some sort, it probably won't be Tesla unless they really change up the styling. Volvo is my first choice as the moment.

This isn't just a turbo though... it's got turbo, super, and electric all working together to boost. -

I will give them this, the T8 PHEV is the most V8 feeling "not-a-V8" I have ever driven. But it's supercharged, turbo-charged, and electrically boosted... so it better feel like that. -
The Cascada is the older version of the Delta platform... they did offer it in a hardtop, and with a 2.0T.
