  1. Toyota does it to some extent. IMO what GM does not understand is that they have a cash-bleeding cancer in their NA operations that was never taken care of. The truck/SUV-craze profits should have been used (a) to align capacity with demand in NA and (b) to have money flowing into the development of cars as a hedging strategy against a downturn in truck/SUV demand. GM just rode the profit wave and was not aggressive enough during the good times. Now that things are getting tougher, it's just easier to ask Washington for money and blame the politicians there if the NA operation goes down. 2 years ago I was quite optimistic re GM, now... well... not much so... so much potential wasted over the last 40 years...

  10. Last sentence before you asked me what I think got lost in the Google translator, but I'll throw my in: I was reading a research note from a Bank this week and they did a comparison of the Great Depression to the trends seen since the peak of the .com bubble... It's amazing how similar the patterns are, with the exception of the variables related to government intervention and adjustment of real interest rates, which have been incredibly quick in the 2000s and were very slow during the Great Depression. We are going through an era very similar to the Great Depression. I don't think a major reformatting or reshaping of the global economy is starting now, as I think it started when the .com bubble burst. But changes will become more visible with time. Investment will have to become much more important in the US economy, which means you guys will have to save more and consume less. China cannot grow at 10% a year indefinitely (if it economy is indeed growing at the pace the statistics say they're growing) and cannot accumulate foregn currency reserves indefinitely without severely disrupting the global economy.

  20. Friday night I drove to Lisbon to have dinner and go out with a few friends, Saturday I went out to lunch with friends from my college undergrad days, so I decided my birthday should be a quiet Sunday spent with my parents in Lisbon.
  21. Thanks guys! Life's been good since I changed jobs, I'm feeling really happy with the fact I make holes in the ground for a living, and I'm on the lookout for blondes and Saabs. And buses, just in case the blonde I'll share my future Saab with is taking one of those to work :AH-HA_wink:
