    Rumorpile: Toyota To Change Design Of Next Prius?

    There are vehicles that with a quick glance, you immediately recognize; the Porsche 911 and the Volkswagen Beetle are perfect examples of this. Another vehicle that follows this is the Toyota Prius. Since the second-generation model, the Prius has earned a place of being instantly recognizable due to its shape. Now, Toyota is pondering whether to change it or not.

    “There’s an undercurrent among most people that they’re ready for a new Prius look. Maybe our architecture has been a little bit similar for the last two generations.” said Chris Hostetter, Toyota’s U.S. group vice president for strategic planning.

    Hostetter told Bloomberg that the company is currently debating whether to keep the aerodynamic wedge-shape look or go towards something more dramatic. This possible change is due to Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda wanting to make the company’s cars more exciting, and make the Prius more appealing to buyers.

    I doubt we will ever see any radical changes. Toyota has talked about radical changes in the past and what they see as radical is just a liberal ultra conservative design.

    Course their current ugly Predator style for Lexus might to some be considered radical when it is just down right ugly.

    Course if they go radical, would they not possibly end up loosing some MPG which is what the Prius is all about?

      Toyota Motor North America Reports March 2017 Sales
      Toyota division set March and first quarter sales record in light trucks Toyota division SUVs up over 15 percent Lexus division light trucks, Total NX sales set new March best ever PLANO, Texas (April 3, 2017) – Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) Inc., today reported its U.S. March 2017 sales of 215,224 units, a decrease of 2.1 percent from March 2016 on a volume basis. With the same number of selling days in March 2017 compared to March 2016, sales were down 2.1 percent on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis. 
       
      Toyota division posted March 2017 sales of 187,289 units, down 1.2 percent on a volume and DSR basis.   
       
      “The industry might see its first dip below a 17 million SAAR since June 2016, although it will likely be nearly flat to last March,” said Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager, Toyota division. “The Toyota division set a new light truck record for the month and quarter as we saw SUV sales sizzle with a best-ever March for RAV4, Highlander, and 4Runner, all up double digits.”
       
      Lexus posted sales of 27,935 units, down 7.5 percent on a volume and DSR basis. 
       
      “In March, luxury utility vehicles continued to move off dealer lots,” said Jeff Bracken, Lexus group vice president and general manager. “NX posted sales up 24 percent, and GX rose by 31 percent as our dealers met customer’s needs with better inventory during our Command Performance Sales Event.”
       
      March 2017 Highlights:

      We know Cadillac is planning a major product offensive beginning with the XT3 crossover next year, along with a few other products such as a seven-seat crossover and a competitor to the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA. Automobile Magazine reports that Cadillac is planning eight all-new or redesigned models by 2022. They include,
      XT3: (Compact crossover) in 2018 CT3: (ATS Replacement) in 2018 XT7: (Seven-seat crossover that is reported to be on Omega. Other reports put say it will use the platform underpinning the redesign Buick Enclave/Chevrolet Traverse) in 2019 CT5: (Replacement for the CTS) in 2019 XT1 or XT2 (Subcompact crossover) in 2020 XT5 Redesign (Possibly going on Omega) in 2021 CT1 or CT2 (A3 and CLA fighter) in 2021 CT8: (Flagship using Omega) in 2021 All of these models are expected to use an evolutionary design theme from the Escala concept. It is still unknown whether or not the CT1/CT2 will use the Delta front-wheel drive platform or use Alpha.
      The brand is also planning investments totaling $800 million into their retail operations in the U.S.

      If it weren't for focus groups, the design of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox could have looked so much different.
      Speaking to Automotive News, chief engineer of the 2018 Equinox Mark Cieslak revealed that focus groups weren't not impressed with the first designs of the redesigned model. They described the design as being bulky, 'not compelling', and looking a bit odd. If this was old GM, they would have gone forward with the design.
      "Back in the day, we would have probably just kept going," said Cieslak.
      "What we had on paper we felt was not going to win."
      But this being the new GM where bean counters lost a fair amount of influence, the decision was made to go back to the drawing board. At the time, GM was scrambling to fix the Malibu as its redesign earned poor reviews and a drop in sales which likely played a part in this decision. They needed to get the Equinox redesign right as the model it would replace was very popular. There were concerns that this could cause the new Equinox to be delayed. But in the end, the team were able to design a new Equinox without falling off schedule.
