Sergio Marchionne, the former head of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles who is credited for saving Chrysler and Fiat has passed away today at age 66 due to complications from shoulder surgery. “Unfortunately, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man and friend, is gone,” said FCA Chairman John Elkann in a statement this morning. Marchionne came into the spotlight back in 2004 when he was named CEO of Fiat. He was Fiat's fifth CEO in less than two years and had a big task ahead of him. The Italian automaker was struggling as it had lost more than 6 billion Euros (about $7 billion) the year before. Marchionne was somehow able to pull Fiat from the brink by…

The times we have seen the upcoming Fiat 124 Spider in spy photos, they have been under many layers of camouflage. But a new set of shots have come in, showing off the new spider completely uncovered. Now as we have previously reported, the Fiat 124 Spider is based on the new Mazda Miata and you can see some it in the 124 Spider's overall profile. Fiat has made some changes to make it their own with longer and squarer front end. The back is also square-ish and slightly taller than the Miata. The interior is mostly Miata, aside from the Fiat steering wheel. Powertrains for the 124 Spider are expected to a be a turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder with 180 horsepower an…

Fiat's performance arm, Abarth, looks to be working their magic on the Fiat 500X. Motor Trend got their hands on some new spy shots of a 500X mule sporting some interesting hardware. First off, the 500X is riding on some very unique wheels. If you're wondering why they look familiar, this same wheel design has been used on various Alfa Romeo models. Behind the wheels are a set of red-painted calipers and larger discs. The big giveaway is around back where there are two exhaust tips. As we reported last summer, the 500X could get the turbocharged 1.7L four-cylinder from the Alfa Romeo 4C. It is unclear if it will retain the 237 horsepower rating found in the 4C or …

Ever since the rumor of a major Chinese automaker possibly buying Fiat Chrysler Automobiles broke earlier this week, a number of them are coming out and saying it's not us. Geely was the first to come out on Wednesday and we have learned about two others. Yesterday, a spokesperson for Dongfeng told Reuters the company has no plans to buy FCA. Then today, Guangzhou Automobile told Reuters the same thing. "Currently, we don't have plans to acquire Fiat Chrysler," said Wu Yunchong, spokeswoman for Guangzhou Automobile. That now leaves Great Wall and other Chinese automakers that we don't know about. Source: Reuters, 2 View full article

Fiat Oltre Unveiled: Hummer Gets a Rival From an Unlikely Source Date posted: 12-01-2005 BOLOGNA, Italy — Ever since Iveco, the commercial vehicle arm of Italian carmaker Fiat, introduced its new LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle) military off-roader, the creation of a civil version was an open secret. And now it is official: Fiat unveiled its Oltre concept car at the Bologna Motor Show. The Fiat Group is no stranger to the military off-roader. Back in the early 1950s, Alfa Romeo produced the Matta for the Italian army, while Fiat manufactured the Campagnolo for both civil and military use from 1951 through 1973. The Oltre is huge, especially for a vehicle with…

Fiat's Dealer Rollout Running Behind William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 27, 2011 By the end of February 2011, Fiat was to have all 130 planned dealerships open. Now, their goal has been pushed back to September. Laura Soave, head of Fiat said about the delays, "We've approved all of the dealers' plans. So now it's just a matter of going through the process." She explained some of delays come from dealers waiting on approvals on permits from local governments. Right now, a dozen Fiat dealers are open with another eight to open by the end of February. By March, thirty to forty dealers will be open. Perfect timing since first …

Sergio Marchionne is the biggest critic of electric vehicles in the automotive industry. But he seems to be changing his tune (to a point). "I’m not as convinced as some others are about the fact that electrification is the solution for all of man’s ills. We need to experiment as we are doing now with connected cars and mobility as electrification is one of the potential answers," said Marchionne to Bloomberg. Marchionne said the company is contemplating adding full electric vehicles to their lineup including a small city car for Europe and a version of the upcoming Maserati Alfieri coupe. The latter model could be positioned as a rival to Tesla. "I’ve always …

http://www.motoringresearch.com/car-news/fiat-500-powerful-enough-hills-says-bbcs-watchdog-1107954951 Buyers of Fiat's new 500 with the 1.2L engine designed to meet the Euro Spec 6 emission laws say the car cannot even start on a hill let alone even get up hills. People feel unsafe in the auto. To Quote the story: “Fiat says this subtle difference might take some drivers a while to get used to. In other words, the reason all the owners we’ve spoken to can’t get up hills, is because they’re not good enough drivers. Fiat, by the way, says nothing about how you’re supposed to drive the manual 1.2.” Interesting to see they used one of the Top Gear drivers who …

Ferrari's showing for the Paris Motor Show is the Ferrari 458 Speciale A. The 458 Speciale A (Aperta) is the convertible version of the 458 Speciale and features most of the the lightweight materials found on the coupe. The difference is the addition of a folding aluminum roof which can open or close in 14 seconds, and only adds about 110 pound to the weight of the Speciale A. Power comes from a 4.5L V8 engine which makes 605 horsepower and 397 pound-feet of torque. Ferrari says the 458 Speciale A can hit 60 MPH in about 3.0 seconds (about a tenth slower than the coupe). The Special A also features Ferrari's Side Slip angle Control (SSC) system which varies the torque di…

Ferrari announced today that the current CEO Amedeo Felisa will step down and Sergio Marchionne will become the new CEO. The changes are effective immediately. The change didn't come as a surprise to most people. Sources tell Reuters that Marchionne being named CEO doesn't change much as he has been in charge since former Chairman Luca Di Montezemolo quit in September 2014. Felisa has been with Ferrari for 26 years holding various roles including overseeing product development and the general manager of the brand. He was named CEO in 2008. Felisa will still be part of Ferrari's board of directors. It is unknown what this change will bring to the Italian sports car…

The Future Of Fiat's Lineup William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 31, 2011 Fiat has been exceeding expectations in the US since being introduced this year. Concerns about selling a small model (Fiat 500) have been washed away, helped by gas prices on the rise. Now, Fiat readying more models for their lineup. The 500c is now arriving into Fiat showrooms and the EV and Abarth versions are getting ready for their appearance. But will there be any more models that are a bit larger? “Fiat will be the small car brand. It will never have anything larger than a C [segment],” said Laura Soaves, Head of Fiat USA. That means the largest vehicle w…
