Energy transition is the ultimate challenge in electric vehicles (EVs) and technological advances are reducing costs while offering greater efficiency as demanded by consumers. Driving the market is the entire powertrain made up of power-dense batteries, electric motors and wide-bandgap semiconductor solutions. GaN or Gallium Nitride is a wide-bandgap material with outstanding intrinsic characteristics that can offer system level advantages with better performance. Lower weight, higher power density for increased range is what GaN can deliver due to operating with a higher efficiency at a higher frequency providing a reduction in passive components while increasi…

_ Toyota Led All Automakers With Most Recalled Vehicles in 2009 In the midst of recalls for sudden acceleration issues, frame rot, and other issues, Toyota has the "honor" of best ever number of recalls in 2009 with a staggering 4.87 million cars and trucks effected. Ford, with its ongoing issue of older cruise control systems, was second place with 4.52 million vehicles. Without the years-old cruise control issue, Ford would have had posted best year ever. General Motors rounded out the top three, with 2.24 million recalls announced in 2009. Chrysler actually had a good 2009 - at least when it comes to recalls - with just under 600,000 vehicles affected.…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 16, 2012 File this under the 'what are they thinking' file. According to Automotive News Europe, the Italian Industry Ministry is in continuing discussions with different potential buyers in the assets of De Tomaso. Yes, the same company name who brought you the Pantera back in the seventies. Back in 2011, the revitalized company showed a concept called the SLS, which looked like to be a BMW 5-Series GT with a bit of Italian flair. Production of that model would begin soon at a former Pininfarina plant outside of Turin. Except it didn't. De Tomaso was losing money and was soon announced that investment group in…

Voltgate: Manufactured Outrage Yesterday the automotive press' world exploded over a small, inconsequential, technical detail in the Chevrolet Volt's powertrain that increases energy and fuel efficiency by about 15%. This detail caused the likes of Edmunds, Jalopnik, and Popular Mechanics to go so far as to accuse GM of lying about the Volt not being a hybrid. I've already explained the technical reasons behind why those publications are wrong in yesterday's article Volt: Still a not Hybrid... no lie! What bothered me most about these accusations is how quickly they started. Follow the jump to read more: Voltgate: Manufactured Outrage

K5 Blazer Design Contest We Have a Winner! GMC K5 Jimmy by Z28Lvr01 We had a bunch of excellent entries for this design contest, but our judge has ruled the above design the winner. Based on the GMC Sierra All-Terrain, this two door off-road brute also has a removable top very similar to the hardtop offered on the Wrangler. Most likely construction material would be fiberglass, but a high grade plastic is a possibility for weight savings. Instead of having it bolted through the bedrails like the original, it would clamp down or utilize some sort of rail system that could allow for aftermarket/accessory tops (tent, anyone?) to be easily mounted to it. K5 Blaze…

The automotive industry in developing countries VOX The 2008 and 2009 recession started in the US, but due to a globalised financial sector and strong international trade linkages, its effects were felt around the world. Of particular importance for developing countries was the impact on global value chains. Reduced demand in the US and Europe directly affected developing economies due to the important production steps that are located there. In addition, Yi (2009) and Bems et al. (2009) argue and provide evidence that vertical linkages over distinct production steps amplified the trade shocks. The financial crisis forced Western governments to intervene massively in t…

With more and more companies test autonomous technologies on public roads, there comes a question of safety of other motorists. A new proposal by the California Department of Motor Vehicles would put an outright ban “driverless” cars that travel with no humans onboard. Automotive News reports the proposal would require all autonomous vehicles to have a steering wheel and pedals when driving on California's public roads. Furthermore, a licensed driver with an “autonomous vehicle operator certificate” will need to be in front of the controls in case something goes wrong. California DMV Director Jean Shiomoto said in a statement the main concern for the department is…

Italy to China in driverless vehicles PARMA, Italy — It's a modern-day version of Marco Polo's journey halfway around the world — but is anyone at the controls? A team of Italian engineers on Tuesday launched what has been billed as the longest-ever test drive of driverless vehicles: a 13,000-kilometer (8,000-mile), three-month road trip from Italy to China, not in search of silk, but to test the limits of future automotive technology. Two bright orange vehicles, equipped with laser scanners and cameras that work in concert to detect and help avoid obstacles, are to brave the traffic of Moscow, the summer heat of Siberia and the bitter cold of the Gobi desert before th…

The 1,212-pound car is just over four feet wide, less than eight feet long and seats three adults in a 1+2 layout. The whole front section of the body is hinged at the front and flips forward for access in a manner not dissimilar to BMW's Isetta microcar of the mid-Fifties. DC or Bust!! November 24, 2008 Word has it that when the Big 3 CEOs return to Washington to plead their case for a $25B loan, they will do so not via private jet, or by commercial jet, or bus, or taxi, or bicycle, or hitchhiking. They'll arrive via a caravan of Detroit's best, brightest, and most fuel efficient vehicles. There will be many stops along the way to generate support and interest in the Big 3 and its products, which sadly seems to be nearly nonexistent these days. This sounds like a great idea, especially since it was mentioned here last week. Just goes to show that, even in troubled times such as these, the folks at GM still check out places like C&…

The EPA’s Electric Vehicle Mileage Fraud Forbes The Nissan Leaf was rated at 99 MPGe. To reach this number, the EPA created a conversion factor between a quantity of electric energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (KwH) and a volume of gasoline, measured in gallons. They did this be dividing the potential energy or heating value of a gallon of gasoline (115,000 BTUs) by the energy in a KwH of electricity (3412 BTUs) to get a conversion factor of 33.7 gallons per KwH. Using this factor, they can convert miles per KwH of electricity in an electric vehicle to an MPGe that is supposedly comparable to more traditional vehicles. The problem is that, using this methodology,…

12 Top Contenders, Only 1 Winner Our 2016 Best Driver’s Car competition is the most competitive in the award’s nine-year history. This year, 12 automakers sent their best sports cars, supercars, and ponycars our way for a week of incredibly vigorous testing. In fact, if you’ll allow us to brag for a moment, we had so many contenders that we had to institute a one-car-per-manufacturer rule for this competition—more on that in a sec. This year, we had 6,484 horsepower worth of cars competing to earn our Best Driver’s Car title. This $1.8 million field of carbon fiber, aluminum, and steel is particularly special because it represents almost every major auto-…

Low funds may keep Converj from seeing production GM's low reserves of cash could hurt the prospects of the Converj concept being green lighted for production. Bob Lutz explains, "Ready to go? Well, first we have to prove to ourselves that we have the money... and then that it's a high enough priority to displace something else, and that we can actually make money on the vehicle, and that there is potential customer interest and so forth. We haven't done any of that work yet." It only seems logical to build it, as it would help offset cost of the Volt and it could be sold at a profit. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 31, 2013 The Advance Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program could be making a comeback. First introduced back in 2008 by then President George Bush, the ATVM program set aside $25 billion to fund advancements in green vehicle technology. However the program was suspended three years after due to two companies who took loans weren't able to pay them back. When the program was suspended, the Energy Department only gave out about 40 percent of the funds. “With no sunset date and more than $15 billion in remaining authority, the program plans to conduct an active outreach campaign to educate industry as…

Seems a British racing car company has patented a new production process that will allow auto companies to dump weight by using race car or body-in-white production to enhance a cars efficiency. With electric auto's having a weight increase due to batteries, this company believes this is the future. seats are 30% lighter than standard seats and just as comfortable and even safer. Better yet is that they see the average auto having a power to weight ratio of 8.5 lbs per horsepower. The company goes onto say that you could have a modern auto that would weight about 1,874 lbs, use a 220 hp 1.5 L 4-cylinder engine to achieve their power to weight statement. The whol…

Oldsmoboi's Birthday Challenge Contest open till November 21st, 2009 at 11:59pm Since I was a kid, I've always felt that Pontiac should have gotten an E-body, but a sportier version. You can see hints of sportiness in the Buick Riviera T-Type and the Oldsmobile Toronado XSC. What I want to see is what a 1979 - 1985 Pontiac E-Body would have looked like had GM produced one. So sketch, draw, or chop me up a car. Any 1979-1985 Eldorado, Toronado, Seville, or Riviera is an eligible base. I'll be judging the entries myself. Every entrant will receive a C&G related prize for entering the contest. The grand prize is a 1:18 scale model 1966 Toronado T…

Korea's Institute for Basic Science or IBS has announced that they believe quantum charging of EV batteries will cut home charging from 10 hours to 3 minutes and public fast charging from 30 minutes to 9 seconds. As society moves to renewable energy or green energy due to humanity outstripping the ability for finite nature fossil fuels to support, one must also consider on how that energy gets to the end user. R&D around the world into renewable sources has accompanied the gradual societal changes of the world adopting new products and devices running on new storage supported by the option to choose your power supply and in this case renewable or green energy…
