Opel/Vauxhall News: Rumorpile: Next-Gen Opel/Vauxhall Insignia To Share Parts With Cadillac

Opel's interim CEO Thomas Sedran made some interesting comments concerning the Insignia replacement.

“We will draw on developments from within the parent company for the Insignia replacement. This provides us with the advantage of being able to use technology from GM that is also earmarked for Cadillac,” said Sedran.

This has lead Autocar to make the assumption that the Insignia replacement will have a sister car in the form of the next Cadillac XTS, both due out later this decade. While we're not quite sure that the Insignia and XTS will be sister cars, we could easily see the Insignia and XTS sharing some key components if the XTS sticks with FWD.

Don't they already share parts?

2.0T, Magnaride, AWD system...

I think the story is trying to say is that the Insignia and XTS will become one.. Not sure if I fully see that

That would be a huge size change for Insignia and then leave a gap in the Opel lineup. Europeans are more sensitive to overall size than we are in the States. (that's what she said)

I think the XTS, de-contented and restyled, would make a great new Omega, but the Insignia would need to remain.

The current Insignia has the same SWB as the Regal and Malibu, maybe the next gen (Epsy III?) will have a longer wheelbase (or the next XTS will go to a shorter wheelbase).

I would guess and very much HOPE they are talking about Alpha and a RWD next generation Regal! Sized between the ATS and the next CTS would be ideal for a nice new RWD based Regal in Coupe,Conv,Sedan body styles!

Wait, what next-gen XTS? I thought this was a one-gen stop-gap until Cadillac got that real flagship that's been a pipedream for so long...please tell me they aren't STILL trying to keep a Deville around longer?? The last of those buyers are about to hit 70!!

Could make sense for the fleet business in the US... Don't think it would make any sense to just convert a Cadillac into an Opel though...

Maybe they want to position the XTS longer-term as Cadillac's volume sedan..i.e. it's Lexus ES equivalent...

XTS makes sense to keep it around for the retiring baby boomers, livery/fleet sales. But in 5 years people who like a float ride like that will have their final car and I really only see the fleet sales for this ride.

After driving an XTS for almost a week, I'd say it will still be a sad day when that car goes away.... and I have a surprise for you folks who think that the AWD version can't run with the big boys.

That doesn't mean that Cadillac shouldn't do an S-Class competitor, but there is no reason for the XTS to not also exist.

the XTS is not at all a float ride... not even close. the 300C, S-Class and E-Class are all more floaty than the XTS is. Please don't pre-judge the car if you haven't driven it.

It is on the firmer side of the middle of the class I think. It's not a sports car but it's not my '81 Oldsmobile either. But my point is, if the E-class has an acceptable level of firmness, than the XTS should be even better as it is a firmer ride. I've driven E-class, S-class, XTS, and 300c all back to back and the XTS is the firmest of the group (Not firmer than 300C SRT-8 though)

I can see a place for the XTS model in the future Cadillac lineup. For those who want the spacious interior of the future large Cadillac but without the high price while wanting something less sporty then the next CTS model as well! All of those in the premium market dont want a sports sedan as much as they want a luxury sedan and the XTS could fill out this softer,less performance oriented mission very well!

I'll tell you this... the XTS is a large FWD based sedan which means none of you will give it a chance.... but it is waaay more nimble than a big Cadillac sedan has any business being. In AWD form, it can send something like 70% of the torque to the limited slip differential in the rear.... and I have proof of it. ;-)

I give it credit as it is a nice car, bit small for what I am used to in a SUV and due to being big and not as big as my Grandfathers Brougham but it is big and nice. I see the point your making Drew and compared to the competition it is stiff when I think about it, but then I was expecting I guess even more than what it is and that is a mistake now that I have thought about it. It was never meant to be a bigger version of the CTS.

I still think it has a place in the Caddy line up longer than the 3-5 years people thought of as a stop gap measure.

I actually think the XTS could stand to be larger inside, for those DTS lovers.....lacking some girth...........and it's a tad claustrophobic for those old timers.

      It was thought that BMW would use the Paris Motor Show later this year to debut the production version of the X7 three-row crossover. But a report from Autocar says the new model will bow at the LA Auto Show. Considering the model was developed for the U.S. and Chinese markets, this move makes some sense.
      BMW has already built pre-production X7s at their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant for testing. The production model will also be built here.
      Autocar reports that the X7 at launch will come with a range of six- and eight-cylinder gas and diesel engines. A plug-in hybrid and an M performance version are expected down the road.
      It is still unknown when BMW is planning to send the X7 out to dealers, but a safe guess is sometime early next year.

This year alone saw Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, and Porsche be no-shows. Mitsubishi and Volvo were there in a small capacity, but due to the local dealers putting up a display. There could be another automaker joining the no-shows next year.
      Automotive News has learned from a senior executive source at Mercedes-Benz that the German automaker may withdraw for the 2019 edition.
      "We have to look at whether a trade show like Detroit fits with the cadence of our launch calendar and whether there's a more effective format for our needs. The G class was the perfect product to debut this year, but the likelihood we will be in Detroit next January is very slim. That doesn't mean however we are ruling out a return in 2020," the source said.
      A source at Mercedes' parent company Diamler casts further doubt of Mercedes-Benz making a return to Detroit.
      "With the number of models we have there's always a new car waiting to be launched. That's not the reason. Trade shows were designed so potential customers could easily compare prices across brands in one day, but this is no longer contemporary," said the source.
       "Once you make the decision you're out, why go back?"
      Like many automakers, Mercedes-Benz has been looking at different ways to debut models and reach consumers. Such methods have included off-site showings and holding their own events.

      Big January Gains for Chevrolet Crossovers and Trucks Drive GM Sales Increase
      Strong Start for Buick, Driven by Envision, LaCrosse Cadillac Escalade, ATS, XTS and XT5 Retail Sales up Sharply Commercial Deliveries Rise DETROIT — General Motors (NYSE: GM), which ended 2017 as the automaker with the fastest-growing crossover sales in the United States, today reported a 20 percent year-over-year gain in the segment in January, along with a 7 percent increase in truck deliveries. GM total sales in January totaled 198,548 units, up more than 1 percent.
      Demand for Chevrolet trucks and crossovers was very robust, helping the brand increase deliveries by 5 percent year over year:
      Chevrolet was the fastest-growing crossover brand of 2017, and January deliveries were up 40 percent. The all-new Equinox and Traverse, as well as the Trax and Bolt EV, all posted their best-ever January sales. Chevrolet’s unique three-truck pickup strategy delivered a 17 percent increase in deliveries, with the Colorado up 25 percent and the Silverado up 15 percent. It was the best January ever for Silverado crew cabs. Chevrolet Tahoe deliveries were up 22 percent. “All of our brands are building momentum in the industry’s hottest and most profitable segments,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations. “Chevrolet led the growth of the small crossover segment with the Trax as well as the mid-pickup segment with the Colorado. Now, we have the all-new Equinox and Traverse delivering higher sales, share and transaction prices.”
      Buick and GMC
      Buick and GMC were major contributors to GM’s year-over-year growth in crossover sales and total sales. Buick also saw a major acceleration in LaCrosse deliveries, which contributed to a year-over-year sales increase of 4 percent for the brand.
      The GMC Terrain, which is all new for 2018, saw a 14 percent increase. The GMC Canyon posted a 5 percent gain. Buick Envision sales were up 14 percent for the vehicle’s best January yet.   Buick LaCrosse sales more than doubled to 3,006 units. Buick’s crossover momentum will continue to grow with greater availability of the redesigned Enclave, launched late last year, and the Regal TourX, which began arriving in dealerships in January.
      Cadillac
      Cadillac was strong in several segments, helping the brand earn a 9 percent increase in retail deliveries.
      Retail sales of the Escalade were up 12 percent year over year, the vehicle gained more than 2 points of retail segment share and ATPs rose by about $2,300. In addition, retail deliveries of the Cadillac XT5 crossover rose 9 percent, and the ATS and XTS were up 18 percent and 30 percent, respectively. Other GM Highlights (vs. 2017)
      Retail deliveries were down 2 percent and retail mix of total sales was 76 percent. Fleet sales were up 16 percent, with combined Commercial and Government deliveries up 44 percent and daily rental deliveries down 7 percent. GM’s incentive spending was 12.8 percent, down 1 point from a year ago, and down 2 points month over month, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates. Average transaction prices were up $1,270 year-over-year, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.
