1987 Chevy Silverado truck HELP

Featured Replies

Doing some work on a 1987 Chevy Silverado, and I'm having a rough time finding a good grille. I'm interested in a grille that supports a grille emblem and also has a bar running down the middle much like the 85 chevy model. Is that possible? Any help would be appreciated.

Aftermarket versions cannot, by law, have a provision for the bowtie-shaped emblem.  Maybe try Hemmings classifieds, or Craigslist, or eBay for a NOS (new old stock) GM part?

Interesting! Trademark restrictions?

Yup.  That is why no aftermarket part fits exactly.

Once GM is no longer required to stock parts, IE: after 10 years, AND their in-house stock is gone, they can make a few bucks licensing repros, no?
1987 is almost an old truck… ;)

Yeah, GM can license repros... I've heard that in some cases the tooling is purchased, and rights to repro are assigned, but never go into production.

In any case, this is why there can be a huge price difference in grills.  9/10ths of the grills begin sold just eliminate the problem, undercut the repro and still pocket a hefty profit.

BTW, Balty, you linked to the wrong truck catalog... the '73-'87 one is the one he needs...

Problem is, the greyed out parts are simply not available right now.  Have to go OEM and hope they are made in the future.  Apparently, the earlier trucks were more popular to restore... but with those drying up, people will turn to the '80s ones.

Hmmm ... would love to see pics of this 1987 Silverado!
