There's nothing to agree with here as you were trying to conflate my argument about GM interiors from the start because of one particular quote while ignoring the entire context of what I was saying to begin with.
-
The above quote I pulled suggests otherwise. You also, again, have to consider context. For all of their flaws, they were built with a purpose, which was mostly performance, while companies like Cadillac and Lincoln seemed to have no purpose at that time. It was a sad time for both companies.
-
That issue is not unique to just journalists. That has been proven in spades here.

@oldshurst442--Read this quote and tell me that wasn't criticism of European cars back then. Given how beloved the E30 is now, it's hard to believe that when the second-gen BMW 3-series launched, it was received with critical apathy. https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a28938639/what-to-buy-1987-1993-bmw-325i/ Sometimes we see only what we want to see because our bias won't let us see anything else. We also seem to forget the absolute $h! that was the 1980s domestic car market. The reason why the Europeans were getting praise at the time was because companies like Cadillac and Lincoln were producing utter garbage without any focus on things like performance (which was a focus for the Germans then, whether you want to admit it or not) during that time. Name one Cadillac or Lincoln that was being mentioned in the same breath as say, the first M3 or Benz AMG? Don't get me wrong. You could not give me ANYTHING from that era that didn't say "Buick GNX". The Germans, for all the praise heaped upon them at the time, were unreliable and notoriously temperamental. That again, does not change the fact that the domestics were even were in some regards. That is just a simple fact and we should be thankful that is no longer the case. End rant.
-
Which does not change my statement about GM interiors over that same period. I know European cars were s*** in that regard but this whole discussion started with the new interior of the upcoming Chevy Silverado. Not BMW. Not Mercedes. Not Audi. Not anything else. Just Chevy (and by extension, GM). Everything else mentioned afterwards was deflection and cherry picking like I was talking to SMK and I'm not taking that bait. Folks need to just settle down and pay attention what was actually said from the start instead of assuming intent halfway through said discussion. But it was still a fact to point out how far power has come over the last five decades. It's really that simple. If you're going to assume that everything is just negative thinking, then that's all you're going to get.
-
He also needs to consider that I am not just basing my argument from the opinions of journalists. He is also getting hung up on the one and only negative thing I've said about GM and that is their proven cheap looking interiors. I said what I said and I stand by it, end of story. At least GM finally had the good sense to recognize what damn near everyone else already knew. And it's not a "reflex reaction" @balthazar if they make pretty much the same basic criticism for the last thirty plus years.
-
It can be both and for different reasons. It is the truth that GM has lagged in the interior department for decades. It’s opinion to say a dash feels greasy. This is not a one or the other situation here.
-
I won’t lie. I would have been all over a 2nd gen Magnum but sadly, we live in America where the word “wagon” is apparently a naughty word.
-
They sure did and it almost turned me away from buying my Magnum. One test drive changed my mind though. You take the really good with the horrible Daimler cheapness bad.
-
Corrected.
-
I get what you are saying about reviews and such. However, I’m not just pulling one out of thin air to make my point. Over the last thirty years, GM has been rightfully dinged for lazy and cheap interiors. While the current pick ups showed improvement, they still lagged behind the other two. Again, this is not a debatable point when just about every review points this out. They are saying this for the hell of it or just get clicks. There is substance to it and there is truth to it whether you want to acknowledge that or not.
-
It’s called an opinion, nothing less nothing more.
-
And again @balthazar, don’t conflate my argument or feel like I’m dogging your truck. That not even close to the case. However, I am also not blind and while I have said that I would take the GM over the other two, the interior would not even fall under the top ten reasons for doing so. I owned a Dodge Magnum for eight years for the same reasons. The interior design and quality were not the reasons for it. It’s that simple.
-
Do get offended here. I merely provided one example of what was going on there. For the record, Ford was also hit harder last year from the chip shortage. Furthermore, not sure using the sales argument is a good idea either. That’s an SMK move. And the bottom line is that they were not competitive or else they would not have given it a wholesale redesign during a mid-cycle refresh.
-
True but the progress made by GM over the years has been outpaced by both Ford and RAM and that has been the core problem. This new one, however, should completely change that notion.
-
A snippet from a three way comparo that was done just three months ago. One of our test drivers described the Chevy's textured-plastic dash as "greasy and sweaty." Diehard Chevrolet fans could argue the pricier LTZ model would be a better match for the 2021 Ford F-150 Lariat and 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie we put it up against, but even the top-of-the-line Silverado High Country doesn't feel as upscale as the midlevel Ford and Ram we tested.
-
Then I will disagree with that because I’ve sat and driven all three (at one point). The GM design looked dated from the start and felt cheap compared to the other two and literally every review of it (that wasn’t from a pro-GM fan site) since then has backed this up. Again, I should state that I would still take the Chevy, for many reasons, over the other two but the interior was not one of those.
-
That interior was neither though, and that’s my point.
-
Nice? Sure, in some regards but not nicer than the others IMO and thats been the core gripe with this model since day one. These new interiors will include the LT models on up, leaving the older interior to the LS and work truck models, which is fine. Again, if it were priced cheaper than the than other two (all other features equal, mind you) then it probably not be such a big deal for some folks. It is not though and that is why GM finally gave it a proper update. That is not a RAM in the second pic. Still a Ford. Also the Big Horn is not their highest trim. That would be the Limited model which does include leather trimmed seats.
-
Nothing to be “confused” over @balthazar . I like the current Silverado over the other two, overall. However, if Chevy is going to sell a $70K High Country to compete with the Ford Platinum and King Ranch, as well as the RAM Laramie models, then it should have an equal or better interior than the other two and as of now, no objective mind would dare that the High Country has a nicer looking interior than the other two. At least Chevy had the good sense to leave the work and base models alone (for now) because it’s less of a big deal with those. The high trims, however, are a whole other matter.
-
The interior alone is a night and day difference over the outgoing one. It’s about time they made one that didn’t look like it came out of the Fisher Price collection.
-
It being a four door isn’t what makes it impressive. It weighing almost 5000 lbs does IMO but still surprised it couldn’t do it faster than that. Like you said though, perspective.
-
The new base model Vette runs it in 7:29. 7:30 for a top of the line Tesla is embarrassing honestly. At least they have they nice 0-60 time lol. That would be a record for EVs only, for the record. Still slower than dozens of others (and sometimes cheaper) cars.

One of my bucket list cars!

I’ll go one step further on that loss of advantage. From an MT article on the Rivian. “Once plugged in and chatting over lunch from Holly's kitchen, Rivian's staffers asked us what we thought of the R1T. "It's annoyingly good," was all we could think to say. No brand-new automaker has any right to build a vehicle this competent right off the bat. And that initial impression held true as the pavement increasingly gave way to gravel, mud, and water crossings the farther west we traveled.” https://www.motortrend.com/features/2022-rivian-r1t-exclusive-drive-review-trans-america-trail-off-road/
