Okay so now we also have big 3 German Middle Finger time? CLAR is a Modular platform and if they use the new fangled battery tech where you can cram batteries in crevices unlike ever before, it'll be pretty nice. Though I don't expect the EV to start at $35,000.

Interesting. So will Cadillac also have lower displacement diesels? Perhaps the whisper diesel will be used...

I would agree, but then again, in a luxury crossover test that was Cadillac's to win resulted in a Lincoln upset and a Mercedes victory. Cadillac had no excuse to not send a vehicle, because I was thinking they would win. But judging by how the Focus stands next to it's peers, there's no reason to believe it would win, so I'm not so riled up about it not being in a comparison, where it would have probably been near the bottom. The Focus isn't a half-assed car, it's just old and the refresh doesn't change that.

So they're reviving a dead car, and are using full grain leather that is NOT aniline? Hmmmm....should be pretty durable leather, how do they make it soft?- 2 replies

I can agree that brand snobbery exists, I am a Cadillac snob after-all. But I think it's just a superficial part of every car. Ultimately people use the G-class to tote around their kids and get groceries. There's the entire function of a car that it still brings to the table. Maybe they want an old style behemoth. I've been fortunate enough to be able to try to life the hood or open the doors to one of these things. They're heavy as f***. Anyone with the money to get these, they have one of each. Or they can get one of each. Who cares if they are brand snobs? That's more of a characterization of the person, not the car. Who cares if it depreciates like consumer electronics? It's now an icon, and I think there's no reason to modernize too much, because it's appeal would be truly lost.

hue hue hue.... RUSSEELLL!!!! LAHALA!!! To many car companies now make drab black on black interiors. I like car interiors that HAVE shiny burl wood trim - because that's what used to be luxo. You know, every car wood have wood, and a tasteful varnish, and it used to be all the rage man. And brown colour leather is like better man. It is like better. It is better than better. It is the best....or er black leather...

Oh good grief Sauve. Stop being a drama queen about it. You know full well how badge snobbery works and to me, that is a sheep mentality. There is no other way to put it. Ok Surreal, I am not being a drama queen. You get riled up too easily, especially for this, where I'm just sharing my dream and life experiences. If you do not like story time, then I can't help you here, and you can keep opinions to yourself, because I don't like being called out for stuff that ISN'T bull$h!.

The brown interior is the best, reminds me of Buick. I also like the Brown seat leather option on the Fusion.

Well then I'm a sheep. I love Cadillacs. I aspire, like how my dad mentions - to own a Cadillac. Now it's no longer about what the company makes. I like the badge, and I love the styling from the CTS and CT6. My dad is still very fond of the Impalas, especially the Impala SS he used to lease from the company allowance way back when. When he saw the new Impala in 2014 he instantly recognized it from the badge on the C - pillar. And Impala, big, floaty, cushy and luxo, that's his fav. I would like to be able though to get him a Cadillac down the line, he can enjoy his retirement then in a very smart, and luxo rebirth of Cadillac. And I know very much the classic myth that S-Class owners get a new one every 2 years. Years ago, a former school teacher (who is a Lexus fanatic becuz Lexus......but his biggest reason to buy a maxed out IS and RX was the legend that has become their quality and reliability)...he told me some of his investment banker friends...all they did replace S-class every 2 years. They'd been doing it now for 16 years. YEA. They didn't really shop outside, they had thought about 7 Series or A8, but really superficially. The biggest thing is that the most lucrative customers are current customers. Our marketing course was so much about remembering when you do a big change, think of ways to mitigate any side effects on current customers. That's what the XTS was I think. When the new CTS came out, there had to be a luxo car for near the same price, but much larger car. It was a 2 pronged attack. I think everyone knows most Benzes have $h!ty resale, but most cars past $100k....they have $h!ty resale unless it's a Lexus or Porsche or a limited quantity model or special edition of a high volume model. When most of those cars are also leased, it's a question of whether it'll be competitive or not - but there's no hassle with trade-in or selling a car private party wise.

People who have the means can buy whatever they want. That doesn't make them sheep. And what if it is just the badge? My dad said when he was young, in the 70s, every American novel/book he read mentioned the ultimate dream of Americans was to own a Cadillac or Lincoln, and if they didn't have the means, then settle for a Buick or Oldsmobile. And it was all about the badge, nothing to do with how reliable or well built the car was. It was all about the prestige. And no matter what anyone says - Cadillac definitely wants to make its vehicles a decision of the kind of prestige they want. Do they want a value, an economical choice or do they want that aura of American luxury? There's going to be a new Discovery Model by Land Rover, and if the G-wagon is getting updated soon, they're going to be competing right against each other. Here's one thing that the Gelandewagen has going for it - it's still built very much by hand, using old production methods that limit the quantity that can even be produced. It's an old vehicle, there's plenty of cars that are much more rational, much better for your pocket....BUT NONE OF THAT MATTERS. I don't like the G-Wagon, but the people who own this, probably can afford one of each. What I mean is, they've got a garage decked with all kinds of luxury and performance. This is just another whip. When you're buying this level of vehicle, this kind of purchase, rationality is thrown out the window. All that remains is that this is a very macho looking vehicle, and it's probably something Pablo Escobar owned while his cronies all drove Land Cruisers.
-
Well, we live in a society where we don't ultimately end up judging people for the vehicle they buy - we judge the company that creates the vehicle instead. Even the Camry and Corolla are vehicles that at one point to many people in the family were tried and true like bread and butter. Simply a stale commodity, with similar expectations of the utility of a spartan breakfast. When my dad first came here, HE was totally against American cars. Then when his certifications were finally recognized, he got better a much better job where he would travel to Atlanta for 2 weeks every 2 months, get the hotel room, car allowance, food allowance. And he'd rent all kinds of cars, mostly big American sedans - cushy Buicks and Impalas...and now he's fully into the American car companies, but owns a rather demure family sedan, because we're regular people. Given ~3500 or so sales of this vehicle in the U.S. per year, sheep do not buy this vehicle. Mercedes itself sells the "better" options for far less. And quite frankly, the people who own this relic, probably have the dough to acquire the better options or probably tried the better options, but decided to get the ostentatious relic anyways. I don't understand why this vehicle is the way it is, but Mercedes has something here which more than just a vehicle, it's MEME.
-
It's a weird target, because it's not like the G-Wagon is known at all to be a highly advanced vehicle. It's the simplicity and tank like construction of the thing that makes it very capable off-road. But most are not taken off-road, they're chosen for their unique style. I think MB themselves are flabbergasted at why they still sell it, but it's not a huge part of their fleet, and it's built by a subcontractor, so they never have a production hiccup due to it's own unique manufacturing processes.

That guy specifically who talked about the Envision himself owns a Durango. Look...I know what the Buick is - it's based loosely on the new Delta, while the GLC is the same as the C-Class. I have a HARD time believing the Envisions is "overall" a far superior Auto. It is NOT. It is for your purposes - a simple commuting vehicle with practicality and some luxo, with marginally more room, because it has FWD packaging. Too many people have cited the C-Class as the best luxo interior for it's class, and the GLC gets the same interior. So, no I don't think the Buick interior is better, I've been in both, the fake wood aside in the Buick.... a loaded GLC for sure gets more metallic trim, and has metal switchgear.and has real wood trim. that's part of being luxo. At 8 grand more, throw aside reliability - it depends on how long ownership will be - 4 grand is easily forgiven by me, because the GLC is RWD based. That's what I think. You can disagree, but I'll NEVER consider any Chinese car from Buick, Cadillac, or any luxury brand. And I said before, the Envisions is a poor value - but it is about time that GM hungered for profit. And besides, if the Envision is better than a GLC, then the XT5 looks really dumb.
-
The GLC is faster in probably every metric than the Buick, and it definitely does handle better too. Hp is irrelevant, so is torque. And the Mercedes 9-Speed tranny is very well sorted out - the only of it is kind with that many speeds that is tuned right.

Holy Crap The Ford GT Is On Pole For Le Mans!
Suaviloquent replied to FordCosworth's topic in The Lounge
Yeah, and Chevy uses a completely non-production V8. The GT production vehicle will use a slighty modified version of the race engine. Look, if the other teams were caught with their pants down and didn't expect a competitive showing by Ford since they were fielding a brand new car, it is all on them for failing to be prepared. The GT won, people will call cheating and fixation left and right, but do you really think anyone would go easy? Or do you forget that a Ford GT race car got obliterated earlier in the season? Ford was in it to win, and they got what they wanted...everyone else is a bunch of pissed off losers. -
Lincoln News: Lincoln Offers Free Pickup and Delivery For Service
Suaviloquent replied to William Maley's topic in Lincoln
Y'all stop bickering now. Anyways. Good move, probably needed a long time ago, but better late than never. Same with RWD or a legacy of an AWD system just as good or better than Quattro. But Quattro is getting NERFed pretty soon so it's just like the GKN AWD system, except with another clutch pack to act like a center coupling. -
Well, MB makes money from the G Wagon, so that takes care of it itself. Every car company has at one point had some kind of low volume car that isn't particularly outstanding, but is iconic or can be one trick pony. But remember, by 2050 - it will have to be electric or it will be gone. It being a low volume car, there's a lot of prestige tied to ownership. It's not mysterious to me - you get to be one of the few to strut the look and the badge. I would not buy one, but that's because I'm poor and I can't have a garage of more that 2 cars anyways. The G Wagon is like cult, like the Mercedes continuation of the E Wagon in America. I will never understand their appeal, but competition for the E Wagon for the E300 will be there from the Volvo V90.

Lincoln News: Lincoln Offers Free Pickup and Delivery For Service
Suaviloquent replied to William Maley's topic in Lincoln
I don't understand at ALL like DFelt why HERE you had to downvote. Both times Surreal vouched for Lincoln because SMK was suggesting that this new program would have terrible execution because Ford/Lincoln dealers are tied at the hip...Surreal provided evidence that in the Phoenix area, and perhaps in others Lincoln dealers are becoming more often standalone. Lincoln right now, except the Conti, MKX and refreshed Z is still strife with cars that really aren't notable in any way. I like the Conti, but the Z, while nice, should also be built at Flat Rock. -
Alright, DFelt, I agree with many things here, but HP and TQ are irrelevant because the GLC is faster than the Envision...it actually is. That can be derived from all the objective measurements done by car mags let alone real people.' And the better materials front is kind of a half-truth. For the price...I'd agree nice interior, fake wood nonetheless, I like shiny wood, and the fake stuff looks quite good. But the GLC has real wood trim, and I've been in both...NOT as long as you have been, but I've tried to push and prod a lot of their car too. The GLC does oost more. A lot more. But I don't think they are truly direct competitors, Buick on their site compare to Auid Q5 (the current gen one), Acura RDX and Lincoln MKC. With those, I agree, because they all come FWD on the base trims, and AWD gets added. I agree that the MB is pricy. But you get the prestige of the brand...for those who want it, and there's only one less cubic foot of cargo volume than the Buick, and well, rear-wheel drive...though the GKN AWD system is really good. For a lease only kind of deal...again, I would not get the Mercedes, BUT I would never get a Chinese Buick, not because it isn't built well or some lame excuse. I just have a choice to make, and I'd like an American or Canadian worker to build the car I would own, and also it be an domestically engineered car.

NHTSA Opens Investigation Into Fatal Crash With Tesla's Autopilot
Suaviloquent replied to William Maley's topic in Tesla
DFELT, 75% is 75%. And I had to choose and be the country that provides the raw materials or basic foodstuffs or minor WIP assemblies OR be the country that does the finished manufacturing and does the value added, I'd rather be the latter and accept what the Tesla gigafactory will be. It's not like the BOLT...that gets the entire thing from Korea... Global Economy....yup. But that's besides the point. Tesla is an American Auto, and it is fully American. The only one too. And it's important to remember, that now there may be a big 3 once more, and Chrysler being looted and pillaged by Fiat isn't the last among them. -
Maybe I'm projecting some kind of practicality or mindset over efficiency over these luxury cars. But my argument is this...if it is a good design, a fairly distinct design, then there is nothing wrong to propagate it to to the rest of the lineup. I don't think Mercedes S-class buyers really care that the CLA exists, and if anything...it means they either have a backbone or ego that can allow such a car to exist and be faithful to the brand. Who knows? We know that when you create a new segment or join a new segment, you have the chance to split sales. What do I mean? Well, when the ATS came out, and the CTS then followed...net sales increased barely over just the standalone CTS GEN 2 sales. ATPs were split, but customers now had a choice of 2 different sizes compared to one tweener. The CLA probably had that effect on the C-Class. People only wanted a C-Class had the car move much more upmarket, into the most luxo car in its class. The CLA became just the new entry level (it's still a pretty $h!ty car for the price, but it's the got a badge worth more than the sum of the parts of the car). If GM built a $100k+ flagship (the CT6 V8 model should do that) and the CT2 or 3, the sub-ats model is a shrink wrap of the same wrapper, I'll be expecting from you Balth the same opinion levied against them.
-
But you're someone who would never consider Mercedes or any import. I mentioned above what I think of the E-Class LWB. The only Mercedes I would consider, because it reminds me of the CT6, but more luxo interior. I'm not calling out bias. What I'm saying is...right now Cadillac is still the underdog, and Mercedes having one cheap car to comply with FE standard does NOT UNDO EVERYTHING else they have on the high end. And if all of the top end of Mercedes is so fickle and generic... WTF is Cadillac waiting for, 20 years to wait to get up there? I've said myself, bring the Elmiraj sexyness to life, like how Lexus brought the LF-LC to life as a very near concept execution of the production car. And Mercedes is a profit hungry machine. What makes you think Cadillac is on a path any different? I'm fine with Cadillac making sausage length cars, I wish the ATS though had a smaller badge and a thinner grille like the CT6. And that does mean I want them to just blatantly copy a model line formula that is supposedly "Germanic".

NHTSA Opens Investigation Into Fatal Crash With Tesla's Autopilot
Suaviloquent replied to William Maley's topic in Tesla
So when some idiot uses the Snapchat in their vehicle while driving and gets killed or injures others, is that not distracted driving? And also...HYPER....to SUGGEST A 19K GM vehicle will be the first to get SuperCruise. We all remember when the GM ignition switch trials were going on, you had so many eloquent, passionate and politcal statements on how GM was also getting screwed over, and that boneheads should've not put too much weight on their keys, or they were distracted, which in some way caused the switch to turn over...or that not wearing seatbelts, which compounded the injuries. I think those are actually good points... I agree, there are instances where the customer is blowing up the risks in a bad way, or a ravenous hound looking for a payout from manufacturer. Double standards...much? SMH. Corroborating witness and material evidence to back up the claim the driver was impaired. Being impaired can be many things. Texting while driving, drinking while driving, or stupidly distracted oneself while forgetting that Tesla has made no claim that autopilot can work without any input from the driver.
