BMW News: BMW Not Planning Mass Production of EVs Until 2020
balthazar replied to William Maley's topic in BMW
No; the delay is : "its current electric vehicle technology is not profitable".- 11 replies

I hate the rear end of the c-class; THAT at least is unquestionably bland, plus I get a strong toyota solara vibe off it. The rest of the car is fine, tho I wish MB would go back to distinguishing the noses on all their model lines from each other.

Tho this is far from a point of contention for me, if I think about it my impression is that a 4-dr with quarter windows IN the rear door is a compromise- as they never open (used to 50 years ago), they are ONLY there to facilitate the lowering of the rear glass all the way. Not that it looks bad, I simply don't care to see that engineering compromise: See what I mean; go back 10 years and the engineers 'got it done' : Of course- a lot of that has to do with a huge wheelbase. I like the CT6 6-window look, I think on this car at least it looks more upscale.

• You meant Escala, not Eldorado. • How is where the quarter window is located make the design 'need fixing'? I can't find that to remotely be an issue. • Update to the car looks great IMO, tho I'm not a huge fan of the blacked out grille- I'd like to see it in person but generally speaking, such always feels cheaper to me. Cadillac has near a century of history with bright grillework.

Yes; GM will use GM platforms, just as MB uses MB generic platforms. Pretty standard.

Yes; every OEM has recalls. No; recalls are NOT "meaningless".

I've not heard of any specific issues with any of the 4 Division's circa 350s. I know the Pontiac 35(5)s were well designed/lasted a long while... it's just with the same size block; most Pontiac folk just build a 400 or 455. - - - - - Drew, hope you kick whatever you may be dealing with quickly.

Yes, but neither is RWD 'anything special'. Aren't most of those also AWD?? Besides, the entire reason the XT5 is even in this thread is a suggestion this engine go in the XT5, but it 'can't' because it's FWD... when most are AWD, just like the CT6 V-Sport is going to be. Swap the subframe out & shoehorn a longitudinal V8 in (provided that's what Cadillac wants to).

Anyone who thinks 60 million vehicles recalled for frequently MAJOR engineering problems is reliable is likewise. - - - - - I don't 'have it out for' Volvo; volvo's not remotely on my radar. Just making observations especially topical whenever unreasonable fawning occurs. I hear 'incredible!', 'stunning' and I simply look at some studio photographs to see if reality matches up with the elevated hype. I heard this 20 years ago about BMWs, when they weren't nearly so frequent. So I sought out a few in parking lots and leered thru the window. Completely pedestrian, and always with those giant black steering wheels that color-matched nothing else in the interior. Like a school bus.

Huh: 0.2L larger than the merecedes S560 4.0TT, but develops 87 more HP and 111 more TRQ. Plus a 10-spd trans. Wonder when mercedes will respond.

I don't know about audi, esp as a cog in a giant wheel, but benz's volume and ATPs in the US (vs. all the fleet sales in the EU) have to make it FAR more than a 'sideshow' here.

Nissan News: Rumorpile: Successor to 370Z To Launch in 2020... Maybe
balthazar replied to William Maley's topic in Nissan
I never got the Skyline love. Performance aside (and actually I'm not up on how well they did), they were always stylistically dated approximations of earlier muscle cars to my eye. Seems like datsun/nissan felt a chin spoiler was the cure-all for any generic family pod.- 19 replies

Sure it has, but that's the SHEER BEAUTY of non-conformity! ! ! ...[in a mind-numbing time where every brand has a 2.0L and 3.0L engine]

Buick in this broad period used engine call-outs based on torque rating instead of displacement.

'Wildcat 465' = 425 CI 4bbl. That car has no A/C.

Do you have any idea of how many toyota/lexus recalls have been issued in the last 10 years?? The cumulative total of vehicles must be closing in on 60 million at this point. There were 3 in the last 3 weeks. And if that studio photo of the LC is indicative, I'd hope the Mustang isn't as "good" as a lexus. - - - - - Here's another, and I'm telling you- it's just RAMPANT if you actually look. Volvo XC90, a vehicle that starts at $47K. See that seam- why isn't it consistent (and tight)- why is it angling wider as it goes to the right? This is shoddy body engineering, because it sure isn't intentional. What it is is inexcusable.

Audi News: Audi's W12 To Have Its Last Hurrah in New A8
balthazar replied to William Maley's topic in Audi
• Well, a V-16 is smoother than a V-12, but yeah. • A W-12 is still a V-12, just that each bank of cylinders is slightly splayed from a common centerline. They're still on a singular crankshaft, it's just a way to build a physically shorter block by 'overlapping' the bores. • Internal combustion DEFINITELY has many decades left. Unless there's a strict nation-wide ban (which isn't going to happen), the market share penetration of EVs / PHEVs has been dismal. 199K last year out of 17.25 MILLION, and the hybrid prius came out 21 years ago! Somehow, people seem to think EVs are going to be over 50% of new vehicle sales in 10 years or something- it's not remotely realistic.
