  1. MINI UPDATE: Other concerns have stalled the project a bit lately - life got in the way again. But, I've had a few pics that have been hanging out in the camera for too long so I decided to post them now. Another issue has been my search for a few key parts that I wanted/needed to obtain before I could go much farther. A while back I won a vintage Corvette/Camaro LT-1 valve cover but lost the auction to a sniper when trying for the mate for it. Since then I have been outbid again and again on sets of these. Well, I finally broke down and spent more than I wanted to to get a pair. I dislike most all aftermarket valve covers and especially the cheap chromies that came with my engine, so I just bit the bullet. The other missing piece has yet to be found. I need the fan mount half of the A/C box as the original was chewed by mice (as was the one in my parts car). Both of these parts really have to go in now so I can finish the re-assembly. Anyway, as I've said before, I'm re-conditioning each piece before installing it. In the following pics you will see some of the hardware and brackets being painted next to the labeled bags they have been stored in. Also the recently new and now cleaned-up alternator and starter motor as well as the new stainless transmission cooling lines. All of those items are now installed on the car. I have also re-installed the front wiring harness after cleaning it and the contact points of the connectors and coating them in fresh dielectric grease for good connections. I'm also posting a pair of pics showing some of these components on the car as well as a pic of the trio of valve covers which I am working on while browsing the forums tonight. Once I get my hands on the half of the A/C box, only an extended nut and bolt drill stands between me and getting this car running. PICS:
  2. That's quite the diverse fleet. A guy down the road from me has a few oddball cars he is preserving and one of them is an absolutely pristine Matador wagon. This car appears to be showroom perfect.
  3. British sportscars aren't transportation - they are a hobby you can sometimes drive. :AH-HA_wink:
  4. A Smart with the canvas top rolled back and a terrified- looking young girl at the wheel. Her father? was riding shotgun and looking a bit nervous as well. The car was in rush hour traffic and I thought to myself that there is simply no way I would ride in that thing on a deserted road let alone in traffic like that.
  5. I like the mix of angles on the Cobalt in this thread: -reporter -Cobalt owners -Cobalt sales at the dealership -And a GM employee ( if he chooses to respond in a serious fashion) Could be a pretty good overall perspective on the car.
  6. A completely different option would be certain British sportscars such as the a Triumph Spitfire or an MGB or Midget. These are dead simple and can be had for a song. Just don't expect to daily drive them.
  7. Your gated community would not save you from your fate.
  8. True that. I always had a soft spot for the Dodge Mirada, especially in CMX trim.
  9. Welcome to the asylum!
  10. There are under-rated cars that have great potential still around if you look. - A Chevy Monza (and clones) - second gen and up Novas (and clones) - 3rd and 4th gen F-bods - All A and G body cars from '73- '88 - Fox body Mustangs All of the above are still affordable and offer the ability to easily be modified into a personal expression of your taste without breaking the bank like most cars from the musclecar era would (even if they aren't musclecars). The irony of it is, that you can modify these cars to meet or exceed the performance and style of a well-known "classic" for a tiny fraction of the price.
  11. The grand majority are at least boring if not outright ugly, but there are some bright spots. It certainly isn't a high water mark of design excellence like the 20's or the 60's and early 70's. Even the nasty 80's had more decent designs than we have now, despite the other afflictions of the cars from that decade. Today you have to sift through lots of mud to find a pinch of design gold - and then you need to act fast before it goes away.
  12. There was a news report recently that soy was linked to impotence as well. Glad I'm not into that veggie thing.
  13. Excellent read! I'm very glad to hear talk of energy diversity rather than conservation as the way forward.
  14. It was an ok car. I used it as a beater, often driving it into Philly for shows and such. There were lots of these big FWD GMs in the city at that time, and being a sliver gray color it blended right in. No one ever bothered the car anywhere downtown so it was my urban cammo cruiser. The car was comfortable, if a bit slow.
  15. Outside issues have caused a bit of a delay.
  16. If you win it, I'm not sure I want to know...
  17. I think you miss the point of this car, 68. Look beyond the Indy Yellow.
  18. Need pics of that '65 vert Camino!
  19. Well, it was last time I checked - but that was years ago. I wonder if I still have the guy's number?
  20. No more rice talk in this thread.
  21. Lots of pics of the one I had in this thread: http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index...?showtopic=6833
  22. Legend has it that GM did build a few 442 wagons.
  23. They built one for the IROC races too: By CaminoLS6 Both cars have been on ebay before.

  25. That's some very sad commentary there.
