I agree, Hyundai-Kia is making progress with each generation of new products. I think GM should at least watch them as closely as they watch Toyota.

Yep, that simple. This is not a philosophical issue, it's just business.

I think it will happen and it will be a great PR tool, as long as people get the 40-mile all-electric range in real-world driving conditions. Profitability is something that is probably best left undiscussed for now.

I think OEMs should be careful in their assessment of how easy it is to sell hybrids. Here's something from a survey by PwC in Europe. The document is called The automotive industry and climate change - Framework and dynamics of the CO2 ®evolution: American buyers are known to be much more price/deal sensitive than Europeans, so the reluctance to pay a significant price premium for a hybrid vehicle would probably be larger in a US survey. Re sales, GM did a good job given the state of the market and its product mix.
