    Rumorpile: BMW To Show Off The X4 At The Detroit Auto Show Next Year?

    I'm sure all of us were thinking, "You know what would make BMW's lineup perfect? A smaller X6." Well as we have been reporting for the past year, BMW has been working on a smaller X6, tentatively called the X4.

    According to Autoweek, BMW could be showing the new X4 at next year's Detroit Auto Show. The X4 would carry the same coupe-like styling as the X6, while using the X3's platform as a base. The engine lineup will be similar to X3 with four- and six-cylinder engines. There is also talk of a X4 M in the works.

    As James Mill put it, "production of commodities creates, and is the one and universal cause which creates a market for the commodities produced.", i.e., supply creates demand. That's BMW's reasoning here IMHO.

    I forsee BMW having a hard landing in the future. I honestly do not see a market for this car or the x6 for that matter. They are niche vehicles with very little sales from what I can gather. Is this just to have some marketing change blurb. I guess if they can really build it without it having a drain on raw costs, then a break even niche auto will work. But I do not see it at this time.

    blu and dfelt are spot on.

    BMW success was premium price and premium experience of existing vehicle types.

    Trying to spawn more models just for kicks, and keep prices up, will be their downfall.

    Adding more models that aren't needed, will just drive the price down and then they will have to dumb down the vehicle too.

    BMW shouldn't chase volume in the US. It will kill them.

    What else is there for BMW do sell? Why not fix some of the lackluster products they've left behind? The Z4 has gotten big, heavy (heavier than a Buick Verano), and ugly. Why can't we get a nice little Z3 roadster again?

    They need to calm it down on weird segment combinations, and keep the focus on the core models. Sadly though people will buy the X4, because Americans like pointless SUVs. Maybe BMW should spend more time on putting hydraulic steering back into cars rather than making 4-door coupe SUVs.

      I promise to point out the bad as well. I actually have hit one thing that is bizarre, their printed owner's manual if very much behind their software update interface, as such there are features that has no instructions on using. I get that the printing happens early, but even Kia Connect, their online presence does not cover some of the stuff that has been updated with the latest OTA update we got this week. Another weird issue is that when you setup the Kia Connect software on your smartphone and invite the wife in this case, it links your two accounts and as such the setting 1 and setting 2 for seat positions, mirrors, environment settings, etc. get merged and you have to unlink your accounts to then have individual settings. Again, nowhere documented.  Kia Connect online community is a good thing as plenty of folks have posted in it to help each other out on how to do things since the existing documentation from the company is not there. I can see where this would be frustrating for a non-tech person to use the advanced features successfully.  The EV otherwise drives like any other auto and the wife already did her first trip to the south end to deal with her side of the family and was very happy at the efficiency of the EV in power used. OTA process is very slick and smooth. You can do it at the time it prompts you, do it when you go to turn off the auto, it will process in the background after you shut off the EV or schedule a time to have the OTA applied. Have to say the Dealership experience has surpassed anything I have experienced in the shopping process at any other auto company. I have a Leasing/Buying an EV in 2024 story coming documenting the experience of getting this EV.

      So did my first high speed charging at the Electrify America charging station near my house. Was very easy to use with the account on my phone. Pretty much, I backed into the open spot, plugged in the charging cable and then tapped my phone to the NFS point and it did the handshake and started charging. Since this station is near a Target, I went and did our grocery shopping while it charged, got back with a few minutes left on charging and then disconnected and drove away. Easy Peasy.
