Hyundai Hops Aboard the EV Train

      Maybe Hydrogen isn't the future

Hyundai had a put a lot of confidence into hydrogen being the future power source for vehicles. But much like Toyota, the Korean automaker is realizing that electrics are the way of the future and they might want to jump on the bandwagon soon.

Today at a press conference in Seoul, Hyundai announced that it would be placing electric vehicles front and center with plans to launch several long-range EVs in the coming years. This includes an electric version of the Kona early next year and an electric sedan for Genesis in 2021 that is expected to have a range of 310 miles. Hyundai also confirmed a report by Reuters saying the company is working on a dedicated EV platform.

"We're strengthening our eco-friendly car strategy, centering on electric vehicles," said Hyundai Executive Vice President Lee Kwang-guk.

Hyundai isn't fully giving up on hydrogen. The automaker showed a concept version of its new fuel cell SUV that will replace the Tucson Hydrogen. Hyundai says the model can go 360 miles on one tank of hydrogen. It will launch in Korea next year, with the U.S. and Europe following sometime after.

Well, I'm trying to talk Albert into a plug-in for his next vehicle, but so few of them come in AWD. Those that do have pathetic EV only ranges and are extremely expensive. I think we're at a tipping point for Plug-In and we're going to see a whole bunch of them hit the market or be announced in the next 18 months.   It was the Pacifica Plug-In that convinced me of the virtues of the technology. The amount of pull the Pacifica has under hard acceleration is joyfully inappropriate for a mini-van.   The fact that it can get 84 MPGe is the cherry on top..... it actually has me considering one, but Albert won't allow it.

*sigh* No wagons, no minivan, no manual transmission, no coupes as daily drivers, no RWD..... it might be time for a new boyfriend.

    • I could see one of those going bankrupt and gone within the decade without any other company picking them up. Probably Ford.  At least GM has EV development on par to the best of the best in the world, which now would be from China.  I read somewheres that GM has 800V platform ready to go in China but will not release that here in North America for various reasons.  But in the long term of things concerning the global temperature around the US and how it conducts itself on the world stage, and from within, I dont think that an 800V platform will protect GM from the inevitable downfall that is to come BECAUSE of what is happening. Ford started this stackable EV platform network thing just a tad too late.  I dont think Ford makes the cut.  The F-150 has gotten to be too expensive for an average Joe to buy that if and when the US economy collapses, F-150 sales will mean jack shyte. Its only in North America where full sized pick-ups mean a damned thing.   I dont think when the US economy has tanked that full sized pick up truck sales will be all that important to any OEM.  Lets say Canada drops its Chinese EV tariffs and China floods the Canadian market and Canadians just outright gorges on Chinese EVs, the sales from Canada that GM and Ford make will be DEVASTATING to Detroit.  Ouur GM and Ford factories will close for sure.  But...the SUPPLY chains will also falter for GM and Ford from Canada... Maybe Canada brokers a deal for Chinese OEMs to take over former GM and Ford factories? Maybe Chinese OEMs construct new ones? Maybe China says no to that. Canada could also go to Stellantis and Mercedes/BMW/VAG and possiby Peugeot/Renault? Mexico and Canada do not have tariffs on cars being built in Canada or Mexico... This is a mess ANYWAY you slices it.
    • On another note... The Toronto Blue Jays are getting their asses kicked by the Mariners.  Game is still on and the MAriners are winning 10-3 bottom of the 7th. Not a pretty site. As much as I am all about Elbows up and would have liked to see the Blue Jays kick some Yankee ass, which they did, literally kick Yankee ass  En Espagnol As a Montrealer, and an Expos fan, I can also find some joy in this ass kicking on the Blue Jays.    The song is catchy as phoque!!!  Go Blue Jays!    Oh... Lets plug something about Montreal to change the vibe. Like I promised.   Proud to be from Montreal!
